Slayers:Evolution-R must spawn more Overlords
Given how disappointed I was with Slayers: Revolution, I should have had much lower expectations of Slayers: Evolution-AARGH. But it seems fanboy hope springs eternal as I was disappointed with the first episode, especially the lack lustre OP song.
While I'm in agreement with Aroduc and Star Crossed that bringing back Naga was a good move, I'm not so sure about drawing on Hellmaster, Gaav and Valgaav; it worked reasonably well for Try but the execution of Zanaffar's revival in Revolution was too entangled up in numerous other threads for it to be a point of sufficient dramatic focus.
The possibility of Naga's return interests me because I'm really keen to see how this will affect the dynamics of Team Slayers, particularly between Lina and Amelia. But, above and beyond that, I agree with Hinano that Nostalgia is Not Enough.
In fact, nostalgia can backfire quite badly. Nothing stirs my fanboy rage more than the sordid feeling of having my nostalgia exploited. Evangelion exploits my nostalgia every time but REBUILD 1.01 was just so damned gorgeous that I had my pants between my ankles before I knew it. Revolution, on the other hand, was nice from far but far from nice; seemed like a pretty lady revived but gradually and irreversibly turned into an old crone cackling at my gullibility.
Evolution-R goes into the KIV tray and will follow other animebloggers' episode summaries before deciding whether or not to pick it up again.
