Full Metal Panic! TSR – From bootleg to blu-ray

My very first copy of FMP! TSR DVD was a bootleg bought in a neighbouring country, bearing official seals assuring the authencity of the product. While mental klaxons had blared with the ridiculously LOW price, (S$15 for 2 discs), I persisted on my folly, naively putting my trust behind those governmental stickers. Turns out, those stickers were the ONLY thing genuine with those DVDs. I had bought fansubs with much worse video quality than those sitting on my hard-disk.

Fast forward a year and the scene is my favourite R3 DVD shop in town. This store sells a interesting mix of legit DVDs and 'sophisticated' bootlegs. 'Sophisticated' because the bootleg DVDs were not your run-of-mill interweb downloads but DVD rips right out of Japanese R2 DVDs. (That creates an interesting scenario of the bootleg R3s having better video quality than most original R1s and some R3s) The store had 2 offerings FMP! TSR - The legit R3 set of 7 discs going for S$280 and an equally legit looking boxset (also 7 discs with the EXACT omake found in the original) going for 1/3 the price. Getting the latter was a no-brainer then. I came to realise later that, that was a R3-rip and I paid the price of piracy with a botched audio track on one of the DVDs.

Yet another year passes and Zyl has by then introduced me to the sweetest site on the anime realm - TheRightStuf. One of my first purchases was FMP! TSR boxset obtained at half the price of my R3 bootlegs though sadly with slightly inferior video quality. My consolation was that I FINALLY owned a legit copy of one of my favourite productions from KyoAni - with NO defective discs.

Another year passes and the tanuki grows restless with his FMP! TSR R1s. It bothered him greatly that bootlegs had better video quality than the real stuff and deep down he also believed that the DVD presentation did not do justice to one of his favourite studio's crowning work. Hope arrived in the form of a Playstation 3 in the household. Seizing a blu-ray offer on TheRightStuf, he bought the FMP! TSR blu-ray boxset and set himself on the path of no return (to DVD).

Alright, I exaggerate. I would DEFINITELY still be buying anime DVDs given the limited listing of anime blu-rays but the FMP! TSR blu ray opened my eyes to video quality that no HD downloads can manage. This is what anime SHOULD. BE. And the exciting thing was it cost as much as my previous R1 boxset! Of course being a SD-upscale, it wasn't the perfect purchase but beautiful enough to wash away the shame/sadness of my previous FMP! TSR purchases.

Have already placed my orders for Claymore blu-ray boxset and can't wait for a US blu-ray version of Kara no Kyoukai.

A: Fansub bootleg DVDs from neighbouring country - S$15
B: R3-rip (bootleg) DVDs - S$100

  1. Congrats on finally getting FMP! TSR on blu-ray… and for purchasing 4 copies of it in all xD
I have yet to buy any blu-ray anime but if I had a choice I would go blu-ray. Just not much of it has reached R1 yet. Once Toradora! gets licensed, I suspect it will get a blu-ray release and I will be all over that!

    • Thanks! I’m looking forward to more blu-ray releases myself :) Especially when the blu-rays are comparable to R1 DVDs nowadays.

As for Toradora, come blu-ray or DVD, it’s a MUST GETTO for me too! :P

  2. LOL yeah those amazing government stickers. Last time I visited a store full of them I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s so impossibly difficult to get legit stuff in said ‘neighbouring country’ anywhere except online :(

    • When I first stumbled upon them, I just refused to believe that they could be so brazen about getting governmental endorsement on pirated goods. Bought a few (FMP TSR inclusive) to ‘check them out’ :P The game was up when the Japanese broadcast about not to distribute on the internet, scrolled leisurely across my screen for these “ORIGINAL DVDs”. XD

  3. I am moving onto Bluray DVDs soon.

I have been enjoying the rips but after all, I need to get the extras that come with too.

Here in Ireland asian DVDs are really pricey!

For examle a 4 episode anime DVD is like 20-39 Euro.

And don’t get me started on those tartan Video DVds!

    Arg!

The Internet is the way to go but the time!!!

    Why Ireland, why?!!

    • Oops. I feel your pain. Having a different region from the rest of the anime world is a problem indeed (US, Japan, HK, Taiwan and SE Asia are now Region A for BD) XD

I’m not sure if it may be worth importing a BD player that runs Region A. It may result in savings in a long run given the low prices of anime BD on Amazon and TheRightStuf. :)

  4. thats the reason i wish but not dare to buy those dvd. wanted to support the industry but there is just too many bootleg product around

    • It was an harrowing experience for myself too. But over the years, I have learned to discern the two. :P 2 general guidelines.

      1. Get only from reputable stores.
      2. Know the product (ie exactly how many discs, the cover illustrations and approx retail price)

While these wouldn’t totally eliminate your chance of grabbing bootlegs, it does severely minimise the odds. :)

  5. I cut the trailer for the Blu-Ray from Funimation, congrats on the purchase!

    • Thanks! The price was simply unbeatable. :P

TheRightStuf is offering the set again (check out their weekly specials) only this time @ USD39.90 – 10 bucks costlier than previously. :P I think they finally realised it was going way below it’s worth :)
