Hello Astrobunny!
Here's his Washinomiya post. His photos certainly put things in perspective - the hanging stands were absolutely groaning under the weight of otaku ema at the time of his visit. Much sparser during mine! I guess they were clearing the decks for the anticipated onslaught on New Year's. Also IIRC most shrines burn the ema at the closing of the year.

Blessing ceremony for one of the kids
The general reaction of non-otaku visitors to the anime-themed ema was mostly along the lines of Nani kore? LOL, followed by taking a few choice snaps with a mobile phone camera. It would be more than a little ironic if the anime-themed ema themselves became a cause for wider mainstream tourist visits!

Missed oppurtunity for Zyl 4koma ema?
January 8th, 2010 - 13:35
Haess, I didn’t think the shrine was an appropriate place to make "Stripey is a lolicon" jokes. -_-;;
January 8th, 2010 - 15:23
But a wish for the Mounties to catch the tanuki would have worked. Or Stripey running from the law…

I agree with Haesslich…
Never saw Lucky Star, so I can’t say I understand all of this, but all I can say is that Otaku are crazy
January 8th, 2010 - 13:36
Not crazy, Epi. Just focused. Ahaha~♥
Doesn’t the fuss ever tempt you, even just a bitty bit, to watch Lucky Star? I recommend Ep 7.

I dunno… I saw the first episode and fell asleep. I do hear it’s good though, even my bro thought so.
January 7th, 2010 - 16:34
Wow you saw my ema. Nice. I didn’t expect someone to actually see it and recognize it! xD
January 8th, 2010 - 13:37
astrobunny, your ema was the only one in English so it stood out pretty well. Some day I’ll learn how to draw female charas like Kagami…
January 8th, 2010 - 10:36
Is that Minegishi in the first one?
Wow, that’s really something. If I ever go over to Japan, I’m definitely giving Washinomiya a visit.
January 8th, 2010 - 13:39
Sure is, Naz. Apparently the plaque’s left side is sending her bday wishes – Nov 4.
January 8th, 2010 - 10:38
Awesome. Looks like you don’t have to stretch to find anime references at the shrine you went to. I enjoyed my shrine visit here in America (and yes, it was strange but cool to see a European-descent shrine maiden beside two traditional Japanese ones) but Tsubaki doesn’t look as big or as otaku-friendly as Washinomiya.
If I ever go to Japan, I’m going to hang one of those plaques at Washinomiya Shrine, I swear.
January 8th, 2010 - 13:41
I did some comparison photos/screencaps for my visit post two years ago.
Definitely look forward to your ema art too – will give the best of the Japanese ones a run for their money!

Need to buy 4 ema for 4koma! Loved the plug, but where is the wish for mounties to get the right culprit?
January 8th, 2010 - 14:19
Doh! I should have polled you guys and gals for suggestions before hanging the ema!!
