Moving on to anime blu-ray
Since the advent of HD (high-definition) anime broadcasts, I have felt stupid buying anime DVDs. With only 480p, the visuals on my DVDs looks absolutely ghastly compared to my HD downloads. I know it's not a fair comparison but the pain is real when one prefers to pop in the fansubs instead of the DVDs in favour of superior visuals. Fortunately, all that is going to change, thanks to competitive blu-ray pricing.
Blurays are no longer an exclusive play-thing of the rich. Poor tanukis like myself can finally afford the Bluray disc. In fact, my recent interest in the Claymore DVD set led me to discover that its Bluray set was in fact only US$5 more.

A no-brainer what I ordered. Digging deeper into the bluray pile at TheRightStuf (TRS), I was shocked to learn that the Full Metal Panic TSR bluray set is going for less than the DVD set.

Yes, FMP TSR bluray set is currently on its way to tanuki-land even though this furry rodent already has
1. The US R1 boxset
2. The Taiwan R3 boxset (best of the lot)
3. Malaysia Pirated boxset (a mistake of my youth)
(Yes, KyoAni, that WAS how much I loved you.)
Nonetheless, I have not abandoned totally DVD love. My Haruhi limited boxset order at TRS's 12 days of Xmas sale attests to that (unbeatable price @ USD59.90!!!).
I also recognise that not all anime series are deserving of the bluray treatment. Here's a personal 2D list I would like to acquire in HD goodness (because they were so beautifully animated).
5/cm
AIR
Final Fantasy VII ~ Advent Children Complete
Kara no Kyoukai
Macross Zero
True Tears
It's a short list just off my head but since bluray ain't cheap, I shouldn't be asking for too much. Hoping more anime blurays would turn up at TSR but I'm not optimistic for the likes of AIR or True Tears.
Now to hunt for a blu-ray player. XD

Unfortunately, the TSR Blu-ray discs do not have the commentary tracks found on the DVDs, so you’ll need to keep both.

Heh, fortunately I don’t listen to the commentaries. Are there other notable differences in the omakes?

Well, you’re still stupid for buying blurays. I havent seen any anime TV series yet, that would have enough detail to justify such high resolutions. Its just wasted on anime. Movies are different…or rather they were different, 10 years ago, today most anime movies have flowing animation but are also quite low on detail.

I have. For one, I was exceptionally impressed by AIR blu-ray. The visuals are simply out of this world and light years ahead of my R3 DVDs. I expect the same WOW quality for Kara no Kyoukai , 5cm/s and Macross Zero (maybe not so much for True Tears).
I think the key is choosing the right animation. As I have mentioned, not every anime should be ported to Bluray. I agree with your point about many anime with flow animation but low on detail. I think Eva 2.0 was one such example. I love the movie and thought it well-animated but would only get the DVD since I noted the resolution is not quite high enough.
Nonetheless, I suspect we have very different expectations on visual quality of anime. Will report again when I receive my FMP TSR.

Interesting. Claymore is one of the shows where I believe that a proper Bluray representation could help alot – it DOES have enough detail to warrant it, and also the dark scenes could gain alot.
Neet to get an excerpt of one episode to see for myself…

That’s reassuring to hear! My main limitation now is my 1080i LCD. Need to upgrade to a 1080p somehow.. time to sell more plastic daughters XD

Hmmm, I would buy Toradora on blu-ray but not much else :-/ A lot of the shows I would like are older and were only produced in standard def -_-;

Having just bought Final Fantasy VII – Advent Children complete, I realised the STARK difference between an image produced in HD from the onset and trying to ‘remaster’/upscale one from an SD. The new footages in ACC were utterly gorgeous – as crisp/fluid as the demos you see in electronic stores. But the original AC footages, though a vast improvement from the DVD (which I also own), was clearly inferior. So yeah, I wouldn’t be upgrading my existing anime DVD collection to blu-ray but will get them for new series.
Toradora’s on my list too
