Figure display triumph ~ 1/7 GSC Saber Lily and VOLKS Fate housed!
Skane was right when he foresaw that the biggest limitation to my figure display was the lack of depth. But it was a drawback that was carefully weighed against numerous other considerations. Good sense was eventually overruled and the shallow depth was accepted as a necessary evil as I bought my Bertby display shelves for the PVC pretties.
With just 17cm in depth, housing Alter Fate or Alter Hayate was a impossibility. In fact the question I grapple always, not with just a few of my figure pre-orders, is -
But today, for all you proud Bertby owners who chosen this enlightened means of unleashing the glory of your plastic harem, I'm pleased to announce that both the 1/7 GSC (Goodsmile Company) Saber Lily and VOLKS Fate sit snugly in the 42 x 25 x 17 cm humble adobe we have prepared for them. An absolute TRIUMPH in the figure display scene indeed; a legend etched forever onto tanuki-lore.
In fact so overwhelming is this rapturous joy that Wife-chan agreed to rent out her porcelain dolls space for a week. And so we have on display 2/3 of my entire figure collection (see below) - a record shattering event in this household dominated by lolicious-kind (read: wife).
But we all know this wouldn't do. With my figures growing at 14 per year, I would need A LOT more display space though honestly this is the HARD MAXIMUM Wife-chan and myself have agreed to allow for PVC display. I need a bigger house. (Counting on lottery!) Meanwhile, I'd just continue to rotate my figure display ala museums.
On a sidenote, I thought it might be worth exploring customised backdrops for the various shelves. For example an Avalon theme for Saber Lily's deck, live stage setup for the Haruhi Gekisou level or some gothic background for the Gothloli Asuka/Rei etc etc. It would be fun tinkering with the backdrops and hopefully accentuate the figures while adding an environmental dimension to the display. Although personally if I had the juice, I'd install mirrors instead. Anyhow, Project Customised-Backdrop would have to be an undertaking for the future.
Here's leaving with you a picture of the current state of the PVC beauties.
Figures no tameni!

Do I spy a Natsume Rin near the bottom on the right side? And I don’t see Primula~
October 15th, 2009 - 22:09
Ah Natsume Rin is my first figure from Cospa’s line of PVCs – Resinya. Overall good sculpt but the material feels mildly inferior.
I’m still waiting for a decent Primula figure

Great collection and display setup. Certainly beats my plain bookshelf arrangement. Hoping to move into a new place soon so maybe I’ll be able to upgrade ^^.
Also, I spy the Tinkle figures! I think mine might be waiting for me when I get home ^^.

Hope your Tinkle figs arrive safely and soon! The paint job is fantastic for given the copious amount of frills on both of them
Figures worthy to bear Tinkle’s namesake.

Backdrop or mirrors? Why not both? Just replace the shelf glass with mirrored glass and hehehehe… For real though with a mirror you could actually see the other side of the figs.
October 15th, 2009 - 22:13
LOL! I’d rather see their backsides then their bottoms if you get what I mean XD I’ve checked mirror prices before and even the long narrow ones cost quite a bit
Need to sell some figures to raise the funds..

Maybe you just need to rent some outside of house space to house/display your figures (esp those that that are Not Safe For Home) just like the way other people rent lockers to store their wine or apartments to house their mistresses!
BTW figure sales sites, press releases and packaging should give much more precise measurements. All the better to calculate if they will fit in shelves but also WRT doublechecking those exorbitant volumetric S&H charges.

(Not) Surprisingly, I don’t have any NSFH figures
As for dimensions, Hobby Link Japan actually have box dimensions but not during pre-order stages where it matter most. That can’t be hoped I suppose. AmiAmi and Hobby Search sometimes give the figure height which helps though my true limitation is depth XD

wait…. i thought you didnt buy the saber lily????? or was the one i saw on sat yours???
October 15th, 2009 - 10:43
No, the one you saw out of the box was mine.
Stripey gave in to temptation and bought his own Saber Lily after that.

Always bring a slight tear of joy in my eyes when I see figures nicely displayed like this. Especially more so since I’m so haphazard about my own collection and don’t have room to get more display shelving ^^;;
And yea, I think I can say without a doubt (maybe minus Black Rock Shooter) that Saber Lily is probably the best figure of the year… at least for me.

Glad you approve of my setup, oh grandmaster of PVCs
In terms of dynamism and feel, Saber Lily has no rivals in 2009 releases indeed. Although Tinkle’s lolicious pair deserves an honourable mention.

NO WONDER!!!! stripey what did she say about it?????
October 15th, 2009 - 22:22
Bloody knees on durians… you know the works XD
But srsly, I bust my 2D budget for 4 month straight and it ain’t pretty on my balance sheet XD

I have to do something…. my *cat* (newly acquired) is a menace to my figures…. he nearly became an ex-cat when he decapitated one of my favorites (a bit of PVC glue fixed it but I’ll always know the crack is there
).
Open shelving is no longer an option but funds are limited this year (thank you o robber baron driven economic meltdown).

Oh dear! Poor bishoujo… poor cat
Do take a look at Ikea’s Bertby if you can. It’s a nice size for 1/8s and occupies virtually no footprint while offering the protection you need from koneko chan.

aye, we have Ikea in town – so its on tap just as soon as funds are available. No luck on lottery investments so far

No room for the new Alter Fate Sonic Form or Alter Nanoha StrikerS?
Bah.
October 15th, 2009 - 22:36
Heh, one of the key reasons why I didn’t preorder them although the bigger factor is the lack of funds. XD
October 16th, 2009 - 12:45
I always thought Quality outdid Quantity most of the time…
October 16th, 2009 - 23:37
I agree.
which explains why I have 56 figures instead of 200 after collecting for 4 years. As for Alter Sonic Fate/Nanoha, they need a more innovative way (instead of fugly metal props) for our once lolicious heroines. XD

Nice display! You have them arranged quite well
I prefer to keep my figures more spread out, so I’ve passed on the Bertby method and have them scattered about in my office.
VOLKS Fate is also currently in my place of honor…thanks again for pointing me towards Tokyohunter!
October 15th, 2009 - 22:38
You’re most welcome! Glad you acquired Fate (though she bleed me profusely for the month of Sep). I wished I could display PVCs at my office. Maybe when I start my own Maid cafe in future
