CANAAN 12

Summary:
Maria gets a better sense of Canaan's fear, doubt, insecurity - the Dark Side they are not apparently do not lead to - but proof of her humanity. Maria finds a hallucinating Canaan in the streets and proceeds to offer handholding and sleep together therapy. The next day the girls board the train which is then boarded by the Snakes impersonating security forces. Canaan chats with lots of dead people while Alphard chats with Maria and tells her of her role as the one who levels up Canaan. Maria is shot while taking Alphard's photo; she and Yunyun are bundled into a compartment with a bomb while Alphard and Canaan have another one of their flirt fights. Maria decides to sacrifice herself, getting Yunyun to detach the head compartment with the bomb and her in it which speeds ahead, leaving the rest behind.
Thoughts:
I am utterly outraged that we were cheated, yes! CHEATED!!!, of Maria x Canaan snuggling in bed scene. Neither are the most brilliant charas but goofy yuri fanservice makes everything better. And they blew the chance to make us love-love this love-love couple just a bit. It was nice to see Maria do something selfless and break out of the passive, girl-to-be-rescued mode even if she is still the damsel in distress. Though it has to be said that Canaan is in a whole lot of distress herself. I'm mainly watching this show for Alphard (and Maaya Sakamoto) now and still keenly feel the loss of Liang Qi and Cummings.
Hopefully the show will be able to wrap up decently even though the show is speeding towards a trainwreck - I am a tad worried by how, if you add some train signalling sounds and a folding chair of despair, we could have Evangelion Ep 25 (or was it 26?). I'll forgive whether turns up as long as we get at least one happy yuri love-love couple ending though.

Praise be to Alphard onee-sama! I think it’s too early to make a final call since looking back they do leave hints here and there about future revelations. We know Alphard wants to kill the despair that is Canaan, but so far she hasn’t killed it with a well placed bullet, instead Alphard seemed to make a case to Maria about the need for Canaan to be truly loved. As Canaan under Siam was so easily defeated perhaps now that Canaan is with the yuri she might put up a good fight against Alphard.
They do a good job of bringing things full circle (the letter Alphard got from Liang was shown early on, Cummings was talking of short selling before blowing up the conference, and Natsume mentioned the factory and smuggling of umblooms in the first episode) and if True Tears was any indication along with their well researched animation of heavy weapons like the MH-60 DAP, then we can expect a good ending. Alphard insisted in private that her true name is Alphard Alshua and that this is all to reclaim her old self. Perhaps the title itself is deceptive and Alphard is a secret hidden heroine as she is also named Canaan…
Natsume said that they would see each other again, perhaps we might get our picnic yet…

With only one episode left, I wonder if the show can come to satisfactory ending. I kind of doubt that all the business with the NGO, CIA, and Ua virus will be wrapped up nicely given the short time that’s left, but hopefully at least we’ll get a resolution to Canaan vs. Alphard.

I always thought the whole Maria losing her memory thing was going to be an important plot point. So either they drop it altogether or it’s going to be mentioned last minute in one of those deus ex machina moments where the entires show doesn’t matter because of this one revelation.
