Stripey in Akihabara (1) ~ Enough loli-porn to turn tanukis into zebras
One enlightenment I received from my 9 day Japan trip which ended yesterday was
Like any anime fan, Akihabara was heavily featured on my itinerary. Armed with a fat wallet (by church mouse standards) and a steely determination to acquire bishoujo goodness straight from the Source, I plunged deep into the psychedelic whirlpool of 2D frenzy that is Akiba only to realise the 2D passion is intimately intertwined with pornography. Zyl, my partner-in-crime comrade-in-anime had unknowingly set me a challenging task of acquiring one of the Nanoha StrikerS doujin. Now 2 things first -
1. I didn't know doujin = porn.
Ok, that's not true. I had known that there are doujins of the kind that honourable tanukis enjoy. But when one visits any doujin floor in Akihabara, you can't help but think doujin = porn. Doujin suited for the general audience takes up only 10% of the shelf space.
2. I didn't know there's so much Nanoha porn.
Navigating the doujin floor with my rudimentary Japanese was painful but not as painful as witnessing the Nanoha cast get violated in all manners on doujin covers. Unlike many other series which takes up about 1/2 a shelf, the wildly popular Nanoha series has up to 2 full shelves with at least 70% dedicated to Nanoha/Fate in their loli forms. If you count the 10 over doujin floors I searched, that is a lot of loli-porn indeed.
Eventually I found the doujin (featuring StrikerS Fate) tucked in a 2nd hand shop (Liberty) in Akihabara after scouring not only the 2D mecca but also doujin/2nd hand stores in Shinjuku, Shibuya and Nakano. While the exercise has liberated my understanding of the doujin world and the popularity of the Nanoha franchise, my memories of Fate-chan lies in tatters as my mind is seared with lewd but superbly illustrations of Fate on doujin covers.
And this is just one example. From the little I had seen, I'd put the average age of the 2D characters on the doujin covers to be 14. Coming from all walks of the 2D universe - eroge, anime, manga - I concluded no 2D female character has been 'left untouched'. I also reckon I've seen enough to get me whipped when I return to Singapore. Thankfully the folks at the customs only managed to scan my passport and not my memories of Akiba.

How can you of all people not know doujinshi = pr0n?
And especially not know about the huge amounts of Nanoha H. 44.4% of 2008 Nanoha doujinshi are ero.

I can’t believe you’ve not realized this, unless you never went searching for art/fanart of characters from anime. Just a few searches on different websites and any integrity you think you had will be shattered :p I congratulate you on your fine undercover work and look forward to part 2. Although I am worried that it might just be a trap~

And to think I was the one getting chewed out at Anime Expo for not wanting to purchase any doujins.
I appreciate your purity though, maybe that’s why I grew up with your blog back in my days of relative youth (all of two years ago). Well, that and the bishoujo tastes. I try to tend away from the H stuff myself; I’d rather take a good shot of moe to the heart any day.
Although like you said, I can’t help but appreciate a few ‘lewd but superb’ illustrations. *shifty eyes*

Innocent no longer! Poor Stripey
At least doujins these days are way easier to get! 9 years ago when I made my first trip to Tokyo, I recall there being maybe one store in Akiba that sold any. Course back then I was very naive in the ways of anime and wasn’t really looking for doujins, heh.

Di Gi Kazune: heh, I think it’s the scope I didn’t know about. I’ve always thought the doujin scene was split about half half. Can I then assume Comiket is mostly H-goods then?

It’s hard to an ‘honourable’ bishoujo enthusiast nowadays (I can’t claim to be one anymore) since almost ALL the bishoujo have eroge origins. XD I must admit I haven’t been always ‘looked away’… only for 2D though!

Electronic stores not jostle with 2D merchandise and by the looks of it, the former is losing the territorial war.

Steven Den Beste: I must admit it was a real eye opener since there’s nothing like it in Singapore where pornography is outlawed. Entire floors of porn with male from all walks all life (many in business powersuits and also the occasional female) picking up loli porn and browsing. I can almost imagine the child protection agencies and feminists storming these doujin floors with their flamethrowers XD

MrMayat: heh heh I did a fair bit of browsing myself too since… well standing shoulder to shoulder with folks browsing 2D porn is an experience I’m unlikely to have outside of Japan XD
Saw an Azumanga H-doujin though (thankfully) it’s not Chiyo-centric. But I’m sure those exist too.

I just read today about how some inmates are going to extend their stay at ‘Changi resort’ by about 20(?) years for sexually assaulting a fellow inmate. I think even dropping the ’soap’ during NS days can be dangerous given how repressed everyone was.
