Nodame Cantabile 1-2

Caught the first two eps, by chance, via Animax; my curiosity had been piqued by Hirasawa Yui versus Nodame discussion as well as comparisons with ToraDora's Takasu Ryuuji. Quite surprised that I enjoyed it very much despite how Chiaki Shinichi is so arrogant (anyone who uses the 'oresama' pronoun gets an automatic markdown in my book) and Noda Megumi is such a klutz. But the voice acting is just fabulous; Seki Tomokazu and Kawasumi Ayako really bring out the charm of their characters as well as the chemistry between them. The moment when I decided I liked what I saw (and heard) was when Shinichi dragged Nodame off to the bathroom, bent her over and forcibly gave her a rough shampooing from behind.

Shinichi's 'Why the hell do I have to volunteer...' brought out the side of him that cares deeply about others. Maybe a bit too much and expressed rather tyrannically but it showed me that the man really does have a heart. Nodame's plucked chicken cries of surprise, despair, protest, delight and so on brought out her honest, earnest and spontaneous nature. From the ED, it seems to me that Nodame Cantabile is, at its heart, a love story but wrapped up in a thick Music Is Serious Business coating. On one hand, their Odd (Not) Couple from Hell dynamic promises much comedy. On the other, their talent, skill and passion for music is something that should bring them closer together. Looking forward to seeing more.

  1. Nodame Cantabile definitely sets a pretty high bar as far as love comedies go, and when you combine that with my love for classical music, it’s even better. If it’s not my all-time favorite, it’s certainly up there as far as quality goes since the characters and the way they interact is done really well.

And just wait until some of the wackier supporting characters make their appearance.

  2. So my blogging about Nodame knocking on the door of the four titans wasn’t enough to PIQUE. I’m so injured now.

  3. Yui vs Nodame? Damn, I don’t think Nodame is that bad (but both are just as goofy)! I find Nodame abit more refined =3

If theres one thing I’m certain of, Nodame Cantabile will not disappoint! (probably the only disappointment will be the lack of new episodes, but I think the next season comes out this year… I think)

  4. The first season was Nodame Cantabile was great. The second? Less so, given the rushed feel of its episodes.

  5. If you’re enjoying the anime series so far, I would recommend watching the live drama version as well. You get the same type of humour as you do from the anime, but with that hint of wackiness you get from J-Dramas.

  6. Never too late to watch Nodame Cantabile, I guess. With time, I hope you will be able to see why Chiaki-sama’s one of most liked characters of all time, as he may come across as just a male tsundere at this point.

  7. Wow, when you said:

The premise seemed completely uninteresting to me and I tuned out all the blogging about it.

that applied completely to me too. Nodame only appeared on my radar in 2009 because I read about it while reading about other anime that I was already watching. That’s the power of the comparative method.

  8. Agreed. First season laid out enough episodes to pace the story sensibly. It’s still the superior series. 11 episodes for the Paris chapter is too short anyway.

Oh well, at least Zyl can get a bit of Shizu-sama Doctrine in the 2nd season?

  9. Might just pick up the JDrama too but only probably after I’ve finished with the first season. I loved Juri Ueno’s debut performance in Swing Girls so that’s a big plus for me too.

  10. Well played, Sir.
    Looking forward to a review.
