hontou ni Stripey Insists Sisters Cry Oniichan Now

Not dwelling in the land of Nod

The "sweet smell of vindication" indeed; I didn't pick up Eden of the East either. I don't always like what Evirus positively enjoys but I usually almost always react badly to things that stick up his craw. And thus:

It's also somewhat shallow to say, but I find the character designs also detract from my ability to take Eden of the East seriously.

When I saw the EotE screens, I just kept thinking: Honey and Clover. This has got to be one of the least brilliant pre-production decisions since casting Wong Chau-Sang as the Sword Saint in Storm Riders.

The kicker is that I've never even watched Honey and Clover aside from reading bits and pieces over at Garten's. I do know that Yasu is the criminal though.

And I make no apologies for my shallowness. Unlike some people who try to rationalize but forgot they've already revealed the real reason. ;-) Eden of the East is hardly the first series where the art style completely undermined my desire to watch it. Other past misses include:

AIR: Eyes in anime are huge but the gianormous eyes 0_0 of KyoAni-KEY just make me want to hau-hau behind a curtain.

Kanon (2002): Oh the chins. Apparently it could have been worse.

Manabi Straight: It sounds like so much fun but I'm just defeated by the whole fat loli thing.

I'm sure I'm missing out a tonne. Which would probably explain some gaps in my MAL. But it's kinda hard to remember series which I didn't watch at all.

  1. AIR: Eyes in anime are huge but the gianormous eyes 0_0 of KyoAni-KEY just make me want to hau-hau behind a curtain.

I agree, but I think that descriptive emoticon you’ve got there is a little off.

    0_0 — normal anime

    O – O — KyoAni Key anime (O

  2. The character designs for Eden of the East never crossed my mind as being too “Honey and Clover-ish.” I’m able to take them seriously. Hell, if Ghost in the Shell was drawn with K-ON!/Lucky Star character designs, I’d still watch it and take it seriously.

Only when the overall art design of a show is different does it affect my ability to take something seriously. But it really depends on the tone that the show sets in combination with the writing, dialogue, etc.

I guess it’s different for everyone.

  3. That’s interesting, the art and character designs was an aspect of the series that actually made me more interested in watching it. I suppose to each his own, though.

  4. I didnt watch Air and Kanon as well because of the same reason.

But Eden of the East is not so bad

  5. *raise hands, someone else who isn’t watching East of Eden.

but to be honest i did watch Honey and Clover. But it needed more Mayama stalking Rika.

PS. Zyl, have seen the new Nanoha Vivid manga yet?

  6. I do the same thing – usually character designs grow on me even if I don’t like them at first (I did get used to Toei’s Kanon’s Chins of Doom), but sometimes I come across a series where the character designs are so horrific that I can’t stand watching. I’ve heard Detroit Metal City is hilarious, but five minutes in to the first episode I was done in by the character designs. To be honest, Miyazaki’s character designs really grate on my eyes too…

  7. Not yet. Thanks for the heads up, will go and look for it.
