Why I love Toradora so

After marathoning Toradora over the weekend, I finally understood what the fuss/buzz was all about. It is indeed a superb series - one of the best anime romances I have seen. Melding great writing, intriguing characters and focused storytelling, Toradora has been a truly memorable.

In fact it was so affecting, I lay in bed for the last couple of nights recalling/sharing with my wife, the sweet/'evil'/silly things that I did/happened to me in the name of love back in high school.

My corresponding near-experiences with Toradora events belongs to another post. This entry aims to share the reasons why Toradora has been such a tremendous show for the Tanuki.

1. Holistic growth

Toradora is one of the few series where the supporting cast grew as much as the leads. And the most impressive aspect of it was how their growth was so intimately tied to each other's strengths, weakness, successes and most importantly failures. I thought Ami was central in bringing the growth matrix into the clear. Besides articulating with great perception the various issues of the characters, Ami herself is a curious bundle irony embodying Minori and Taiga struggles - Minori's facade and Taiga's dishonesty with herself. It's also absolutely wonderful to see how the characters come through to become stronger and more mature persons, acquiring great humility through the journey.

2. Sacrificial and well supported basis of love

Much of secular love is founded on a hierarchy where self is higher than the better half. Which is why it's typically counter-intuitive in love to bless rather than possess. But in Toradora, it's simply amazing to see the 3 girls go against their natural instincts and work for the bliss of their love against their own romantic fates. Denying your love is a theme I enjoy greatly in stories and the reason why I love Da Capo, Kagihime Monogatari (ie siscon shows). Of course the underlying reasons for doing so are different for the 3 girls. Still it's excellent writing and strong characterisation that drew our utmost admiration of the girls from such unenviable positions. Plus, I love romances where there are changes of heart. Such scenarios almost always guarantee well supported basis of love which draws viewers deep into the characters' psyche which was the case for Toradora.

3. Positive feedback

Most series are forward looking and uses the immutability of the past as an anchor for the present plot development. There are the customary backstories to explain how the characters arrive at the current situations and proceed to show their growth along or out of these circumstances/issues. Toradora takes the interesting path of literally a positive feedback. Tiger meets Dragon. They click because of somewhat cruel circumstances inflicted upon then, grew to become stronger/better persons through that friendship/love and GOES BACK to rectifying the issues that that granted them such chemistry in the first place. Kitamura, Minori, Yasuko are some of the beneficiaries of that ToraDora Love.

I could go on but that would be tedious. There's much more to be said about the characters, especially the 3 female leads, on their growth, struggles which are great insight and a source of much reminiscing for me. Be seeing more Toradora love in this space!

  1. Well said – Toradora really is one of the best of its genre, I loved it enough that I’d say it’s in my top 10 of all time now. I’m especially impressed that the author didn’t milk the series for longer – he actually gave it a good, solid conclusion without dragging the story on and on and milking its popularity (*cough* Love Hina). It’s sad that this is over, it leaves big shoes to fill for the spring season, but at least there’s always re-watching it :)

  2. Toradora is definitely next on my “To watch” list. I watched the first 3 eps and liked it enough to wait for it finish airing so I don’t have to wait a whole week for every new episode ^^;

  3. Even allowing for the cruel cuts made to fit 10 volumes of light novel into 25 episodes — the anime Toradora! stands on its own pretty well (well, ep 24 was a bit of a rushed thing). Its easily moved into my Top Five of romantic comedy/drama series. The characters are not cardboard archetypes, they evolve, and the story is pretty believable (outside of some “right place at right time” moments that seem that way because of the intensive story compression).

If they don’t do a pile of followup OVAs of the various characters, supporting cast, etc — they’re criminally missing opportunities (hoping that the author takes us into such territory – she’s already done one spin-off novel).

Note: the author is a she … and the story is really kind of seinen — which I think confused the “usual shonen” crowd to some extent. I wish folks would stop making assumptions based on publisher because there are simply too many exceptions anymore.

  4. Source for the picture?

  5. Toradora is probably the best anime of 2008 in my opinion. I haven’t seen such unique and substantial character development in an anime for awhile. So refreshing :D . Loved the ending as it just left a feelgood vibe, nothing more, nothing less.

So stripey, which of the 3 girls did you like the most? Wait, that was a stupid question…you loli/tsundere-loving beast you XD.

  6. suguru: The last anime romance I enjoyed so much had to be True Tears which I deemed to be the best of 2008. Toradora is worthy indeed. I’ll be looking out for the DVDs :)

anonymous_object: oddly I didn’t like the first 3 eps. Found the tsuntsun too overwhelming. That said, Taiga has come a looooong way climbing from the bottom of the pack to one of my fav in Toradora. Ami still comes up tops for me though :)

Vexx: You’re right. Ep 24 feels rushed but it managed to stay coherent with respect to the tale in light of Yasuko’s story. I would have loved another ep or 2 to smoothen the kinks to the Ryuuji/Taiga pairing but that’s just icing on the cake :)

    gatsby: moe-imouto. Enjoy!

Zan: LOL! Surprisingly I like Ami most of the 3 girls. Being emotionally the most mature surely helped. I also thought Taiga is not the best girl for Ryuuji but as with love, it has never been about the best girl nor compatibility. It usually boils down to opportunities and timing which Taiga/Ryuuji had plenty of. :)
