Sing till the dawn

I was LOL when Yuki took out the kiddie electronic keyboard with microphone. And when she started belting out 'Paradise Lost' against the simplified tune, I just lost it. Great seiyuu in-joke. And that Ga-Rei Zero OP song was my second favourite thing from the series. Other songs I'd love to hear on the Yuki Minfong Ho repetorie would be Junpaku Sanctuary, mokutt minami growing (LOL) and, of course, Yuki, Muon, Madobe nite. Suggestions for duet with Achakura?

But I was still surprised that a song from an anime by another studio (in this case, AIC Spirits & asread). Yeah I know KyoAni did that too for the Lucky Star EDs with the closed karaoke room door but I don't think those were recent anime. Paradise Lost was comparatively much more recent. Other animes, like Hayate no Gotoku, seem to take great pains only to sample its own music - minimize royalty payouts and maximize pimpage of own stuff?

  1. Maybe they could get the rights via the singer rather than the anime since I think Minori just released that song as a single or something not all that long ago.

It was fun pairing up the Haruhi-chan part with the video for Paradise Lost. Aside from the tone the timing is perfect. And Yuki is slightly more animated that Minorin during that part, but that might just be because of her outfit. Those boots look hard to move in.

  2. Yeah but what about the rights of the lyric author as well as the composer/arranger? I really don’t know enough about how this kind of thing works, esp in Japan.

Agree that the tone and timing was perfect. It’s really hard to sing in character for Yuki and Minorin doesn’t always manage to pull it off 100% but, in this instance, it was perfect. :D

  3. I wish more often that people could do seiyuu in-jokes like that, while making them entertaining. Such that if people don’t get the reference, they can still enjoy the moment. Seeing Yuki jam with a happy Achakura in tone was awesome in itself. It was just that little better when you recognized that song that Yuki was singing, and who her voice actress was.

In a side note, I love how in the OP Yuki’s voice is monotone throughout the entire time. Great stuff. :P

  4. The song is on the Lantis label, who sponsored Haruhi music and Ga Rei music. So its not a big stretch for them to have it in another show. But we have to remember the Haruhi-chan shorts are web only, there is none of the Tv broadcasting nonsense and licensory laws to deal with here so as long as the big ups at Lantis said it was okay to do a short parody where the same voice actress is use, I guess they didn’t mind.

And I think both shows have the same sound director who probably also played a part in the song deal.

  5. Ah, thanks Kraker2k, that makes some much more sense now. :)
