@ danie~

I don't buy the opportunity-cost-to-others argument either. It's kinda like saying my below-average fried chicken is stealing business the other stall with so much better fried chicken which deserves to do so much better. Why is that my fault?

@ Kurogane

I'm not too hot about her idol image either but given how shitty seiyuu pay tends to be, I kinda see how she's going down that route, laid down by others like Nana Mizuki, to try and use her seiyuu fanbase to secure other revenue streams. But that itself has been the source of unhappiness of some Jp fans who think she thinks she's too good for them. As Kabitzin said, you just can't ever stop all the haters.

@ Kabitzin

Konata's a really good case; especially when I heard the drama CD where Konata (who was voiced by Ryou Hirobashi) didn't leave any impression on me the way Aya Hirano did.

I totally do not understand how Aya is considered over-hyped. She has been very good in several very big roles. I feel Konata especially is an example of a character I cannot imagine being voiced by anyone else. I don't fanboy over any voice actors, but if you're the lead and you do a great job in making an anime famous, you deserve your props. And this talk about there being more deserving VAs out there is garbage. Tell them to get better agents.

Despite my dislike for her "idol" image, I firmly believe Aya Hirano does have a flair for voice acting. So far I have enjoyed her roles that I've watched, from the venerable Konata in Lucky Star, to Etoh Mei in Manabi and even Minato from Akane-iro.

Ogiue's quote sounds very apt for her case, really. I will probably continue to dislike her "idol" image if she continues on her current ways, but I will definitely enjoy hearing her.
