The talent of Aya Hirano

I'm not a fan of Aya Hirano. While I think she's talented, I'm just not swept away by her voice acting the way I am by, say, Shizu-sama or Maaya Sakamoto. That said, I have enjoyed her work as Haruhi Suzumiya (megalomania ♥) and Shizu Shidou (Ijimekko~~) but, to date, my Top Favourite Aya Hirano role has to be Konata where she really made the role her own, conveying the chara's distinctive blend of otaku passion, family/friendship love power and :3

Aya-hatred will be proof of her talent if she continues to grow and prosper in spite/because of it. Another Ogiue lesson is applicable in Aaya's case methinks:

Real talent doesn't admit defeat after one little beating. If she truly does have talent, then the talent will show itself no matter how many beatings she takes. She's gotta be ready to be hated, beaten down, crushed and forgotten.

  1. Youre not an Aya Hirano fan? Oh you should be.

  2. You forget Akashi Kaoru? Bad, bad Zyl.

  3. That quotation sounds very Japanese to me, and I’d call it real perseverance rather than real talent. And I’d say hatred is more a product of success than directly of talent.

    But these are minor quibbles.

I guess it’s also due to the type of charas she’s played thus far – I like ‘em but they’re not my favourites. E.g. I like Haruhi but I like Yuki loads more.

Does it make it worse that I haven’t watched Zettai Karen Children? :3

Good points! Agree on hatred due to success (first order in causation). Attempted synthesis on the former: talent is the necessary condition but perseverance is the sufficient condition?

  5. I can’t say I hate her per se, but some of the roles she does does grate on my ears, though Shizu and Konata type roles for some reason I am perfectly fine with.

  6. What you linked as “talented” screams “fake” to me, as someone who listened to how Aya talked “normally” before that Heyx3 stunt (as entertaining as it seems).

She’s not hated because of she’s famous (though it makes a convincing delusion to the hardcores, just like how Naruto is teh best anime), but because she’s publicized more than she’s worth, and that irritates people who are aware of some other real talents out there.

  7. Despite my dislike for her “idol” image, I firmly believe Aya Hirano does have a flair for voice acting. So far I have enjoyed her roles that I’ve watched, from the venerable Konata in Lucky Star, to Etoh Mei in Manabi and even Minato from Akane-iro.

Ogiue’s quote sounds very apt for her case, really. I will probably continue to dislike her “idol” image if she continues on her current ways, but I will definitely enjoy hearing her.

  8. I totally do not understand how Aya is considered over-hyped. She has been very good in several very big roles. I feel Konata especially is an example of a character I cannot imagine being voiced by anyone else. I don’t fanboy over any voice actors, but if you’re the lead and you do a great job in making an anime famous, you deserve your props. And this talk about there being more deserving VAs out there is garbage. Tell them to get better agents.

You just can’t ever stop the haters.

I don’t buy the opportunity-cost-to-others argument either. It’s kinda like saying my below-average fried chicken is stealing business the other stall with so much better fried chicken which deserves to do so much better. Why is that my fault?

    @ Kurogane

I’m not too hot about her idol image either but given how shitty seiyuu pay tends to be, I kinda see how she’s going down that route, laid down by others like Nana Mizuki, to try and use her seiyuu fanbase to secure other revenue streams. But that itself has been the source of unhappiness of some Jp fans who think she thinks she’s too good for them. As Kabitzin said, you just can’t ever stop all the haters.

    @ Kabitzin

Konata’s a really good case; especially when I heard the drama CD where Konata (who was voiced by Ryou Hirobashi) didn’t leave any impression on me the way Aya Hirano did.
