Decking the Bitchy One
In response to the ransom note, here's a head-on shot of the Rei versus Asuka drawing. I bought it at the Otakon 2000 Artists' Gallery; can't remember who was the artist and certainly can't decipher the signature - if anyone knows, please let me know so I can credit the artist. Sorry I don't have time to scan it especially since it's A3-sized, the lamination is troublesome and my scanner ain't all that great either.
My favourite thing about it is actually the two little Mass Production Evas. In 2000, I actively disliked Asuka. I think I must have disliked her chara so much that it overrode my feeling then that Rei was being depicted out of character. But, more recently, when I dug the drawing out and put it up, I've been thinking that Rei isn't all that out of chara; she did slap Shinji for dissing Gendou and gave Asuka the Glare of Death once when she dissed Shinji. And I've mellowed towards Asuka too. While she hasn't triggered my flag the way she had with Evirus, I've become more appreciative of the way she contributes to and completes the trinity, being the Obvious Bitchy Basketcase together with Whiny Lead Basketcase and Silent Timebomb Basketcase.

I always wonder how I would feel about NGE if I was watching it for the first time now. I was a HUGE fanboy of NGE at first, and I was a Rei fan, although I didn’t hate Asuka. I ate up all that biblical nonsense that was spewed and it would have been crazy if Wikipedia was around back then. Now the first things that pop into my mind are:
1) Rei as a case of nature vs. nurture?
2) What if Stripey raised a Rei clone?
3) She’s punching Asuka so she can then kiss it and make it all better?
It almost feels like I’ve taken 5 steps back as an anime fan!

when you get down to it Rei fanbois vs Asuka Fanbois might have been the first great fanbois war.
i can’t remember another pre-eva series where the fanbois faction was split as deeply as the Rei/Asuka factions.

Kabitzin, yeah all those people who were bitchin’ about the Haruhi craze should really compare it to the initial NGE craze in the late 1990s to get some sense of perspective and proportion.
1) Definitely nuture. I think the clone tank kinda gave it away.

Xellos-_^, IIRC Rei was the clear favourite among Japanese fandom and Asuka did not even come close. As a Reihead, I find that somewhat troubling though. -_-;;

I think the NGE craze will easily be longer-lasting than the Haruhi craze, because NGE has a lot more to debate. What can you argue about in Haruhi, really? When people hear the Haruhi “sequel” ends up just being a rerun, they get mad. When people hear that NGE is getting re-re-re-re-re-released, they get happy.
Also, this picture reminds me of the skit on one of the NGE CDs where Rei slaps the hell out of Asuka and then starts ranting and raving very rapidly.

Xellos: Ranma had its share of flamewars, although the number of sides might have diluted things a bit. The non-Akane factions tended to have some non-aggression pacts going, though, so it usually boiled down to Akane vs. Not Akane.

Actually I would have much preferred Rei. For some reason, Rei looks better in a meido uniform…
