  1. Indeed, Haesslich. :D

Mentar raised a great point over at Kuro’s: Hina is the female Hayate in many respects so Ayumu would be attracted to her. But Hina’s attraction to Ayumu certainly seems stronger than Hayate’s. Is it because Hina and Ayumu have spent more quality time together? If so, what will be the result of Hina and Hayate getting to know each other even better?

  2. … um, I’m the one who raised the ‘female Hayate’ point with Hina – that’s both why she’s so drawn to him (she feels a kinship with him, along with affection)… and probably why they won’t become a couple. But at the same time, those same qualities in Hina are what get Nishizawa interested in talking to Hina, since they’re less intimidating when present in another girl rather than in a guy she LIKES.

    To quote…

I love how those two get along – especially since she

  3. That’s why Hina’s so drawn to Hayate, even.

  4. Gah, gomen, Haesslich! Looks like I’ve got the attention span of my laggy connection. :(

Agree that they are too similar so they probably won’t make a good couple. But Hina’s still a better match with Hayate compared to Nagi… unless the latter does some serious growing up. At this point in time, I’m thinking Hayate’s best match is Maria-san.

  5. I’d have to say Hayate’s best match, outside of Hina (who he really DOES think of as a girl, unlike say… Nagi or Isumi), would have to be Nishizawa herself, at least as far as the ‘feeling embarrassed around her’ part goes, due largely to the fact she’s tried to make herself noticed in ways which actually.. y’know, get noticed – unlike Nagi.

  6. Hinagiku and Ayumu does make a very good pair. The trouble is, so many girls matches up with Hayate rather well, that I hope Hayate doesn’t become another School Rumble. Thankfully, it isn’t possible to become School Days.

  7. Zyl: Keep in mind that Hina is tormented by her feeling of betrayal towards Ayumu. After all, in the past she DID promise to root for her and help her get together with Hayate… before she realized her own feelings. Remember how Hina reacted when Maria used the word “Betrayal”?

And to make things worse, Ayumu has been exceptionally kind and grateful towards Hina. If you need to disappoint someone, it’s much easier to do it towards someone you don’t like very much compared to someone you genuinely care for. And this suffering for Hina will continue for a while longer…

So, to compare Hina and Hayate: The latter is preoccupied. He has no real business with Hamster, except when his ojousama is ordering him to ride with her. Hina’s most important emotional issue _is_ Ayumu, directly. And, also unlike Hayate whose weakness is a terrible lack of empathy most of the time, Hina is very perceptive as long as it doesn’t concern herself ;)

Until Hina manages to get the confession off her chest, Ayumu will be her most important person :-> … what’s really interesting is what will happen AFTER that.

  8. Haesslich, hasn’t he had a few run-ins like that with Maria? He also seemed interested in her at the start – well, until Nagi threatened to kill him if he touched Maria. LOL

maglor, I do worry about the silly ways the manga has inhibited relationship development. Passing train in 164 FTL. :( But at least the main charas aren’t Tenma and Harima level. orz

Mentar, hahaha yeah Maria really speared Hinagiku with the B word. It’s just that sometimes I get somewhat confused between the anime, scanlations and raw manga (plus my flaky memory) that I sometimes forget what’s happened already, who’s said what to who when… Argh, I downloaded all the raw manga up to Vol.14 but didn’t copy it onto my laptop before I went on the road again… at least I managed to recover Ch 162-4 that you passed to me a while ago. :D

  9. I think Hayate’s earlier infatuation with Maria and awareness of her as a girl were more due to her beauty and the fact that she was so kind to him despite his a) being a coatless stranger when they first met, and b) helping him despite his momentary attack of selfishness during the kidnapping attempt and holding back that secret from Nagi (until he decided that Nagi had forgiven him fir that act, which is why he chose to serve her after she came in and made the offer). Notice that his infatuation seems to have changed to a more sisterly affection for Maria-oneesama who jerks him around some while teasing him.

Mentar: Hayate does have empathy; it’s just that, like Hina, he has a block when it comes to imagining someone could like him. That block comes from a belief that he can’t be that selfish, as we as an early encounter with the girl who first trained him in various things. Plus, anyone who he’s loved has always hurt him (parents, brother, that first ‘girlfriend’ – who really was his first love, and one he still is fixed on to a degree)… so he’s reluctant to get involved, even to the point of being rather hurtful because he cannot let himself think about relationships.

He’s the anti-Keiichi Morisato; he develops a harem, but be can’t really imagine himself involved with any member of the group, and unlike the AMG OVA series can’t meet his childhood love again, but hasn’t forgotten her. And that Nagi/Skuld is the one after him, while Belldandy is a tsundere as well, Urd/Sakuya doesn’t live with him, and Sayoko/Hina isn’t a queen bitch.

  10. Haesslich: Oh yeah, Maria-oneesama FTW. Hahaha! Agree that Hayate’s attraction to Maria tailed off after the first two volumes. Particularly since he sees her as a (much) older woman (as well as scaring him by enjoying making him to cosplay as a female so much). Which leads to all the cruel humour about Maria insisting she is a peachy 17 year old!! Ironically it’s her that who has gotten more interested in Hayate as the series progresses.

Woah, your AMG analogy just blew my mind. LOL Sakuya as Urd.

Oh yeah, also dug out Stripey’s post about why he supports Hinagiku x Hayate. But in light of your reasoning that it’s because Hina *is* the female Hayate, it’s not too good either because both have a block WRT themselves. Though Hina’s has been somewhat more unblocked because her flag was triggered and she’s been getting Maria and Hamster counselling.

  11. Zyl: The irony is that Hina’s the one who told Hayate, back when they first met, that if he kept being completely selfless that he’d never truly find happiness… and here she is, denying her own feelings for the sake of Nishizawa. And they both have trust issues, due to the fact that the ones they love (less so in Hina’s case) have always gone out of their way to hurt them… although Hayate’s first ‘girlfriend’ is the woman who set him on the path he’s on today… and who I suspect, if they ever met again, would be the one who he’d actually chase after, given how hard he tried to find her again after they were parted.

And the reason Sakuya = Urd is that she likes screwing around with Hayate’s life, has something of a figure, and is probably the one with the fewest feelings towards him, even if she can be embarrassed around him. Nagi’s similarly childish and fixated on another member of her family, which is a major reason why the relationship with Hayate never progresses, and Sayoko as The Rival fits Hina better than say.. Belldandy, given that Hina’s not a magical girl. The only Belldandy-like character around is Maria, and she really isn’t seeing Hayate as much as a romantic partner than as a target for her mischievous side… even if he is the only guy close to her age who she’s around for any length of time.

And Hayate’s first love, while fulfilling the OVA version of AMG’s requirements for a very special girl who counts as the ‘first girl’ in Hayate’s heart… isn’t there. And she’s not nearly as nice as Belldandy was, although she’s filled out quite nicely in the years since. Nagi should be glad that her TRUE rival’s out of the way – else there’d be no hope, period… and maybe no Hayate around either.

  12. Naked Maria on chapter 121’s splash page. Nagi Sanzenin knows Fanservice.

  13. Also, Volume 10 from Viz showed up… with all of the balcony scene in high-res, along with the Maria-getting-dressed part a chapter or two later.

  14. … and that balcony scene is forever tainted by the “My Heart Will Go On” song, seeing Hayate as Jack, with Hinagiku as ‘Rose’.

  15. Fan service is SRS BZNS. Yeah, I so love ‘getting dressed’ scenes. Some times more than ‘getting undressed’ scenes!

I have not seen Titanic so I guess the balcony scene remains pristine for me. I have sung ‘My Heart Will Go On’ (in Metallica style :3) at karaoke though.

  16. Zyl: The issue is that they can do it poorly.. or do it well, where the tease makes the hint of thigh or shoulder more alluring than it might otherwise be. Or, to steal from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, the ‘unaired’ battle is often more exciting than the aired version, as it were.

And having Celine Dion music runnign through your head during such scenes is… bad.

  17. Hina’s album out.

  18. Hinagiku’s birthday? No post?
