How popular are your favourite anime bishoujos?
It appears that I'm the only fan of Iokawa Karada, at least according to Myanimelist. Ioka-who? I don't blame you. Served without fanservice and mecha, Asatte no houkou had only good drama, pseudo-lolis and strong characterisation to draw viewers. In other words, it wasn't as popular as it could have been in another genre. Still there's poor justifications why Karada should get almost no love since to this tanuki, she was the soul of an excellent production. And that got me thinking -
Though the sampling size may be small and the demography biased, I pulled out numbers from the only place I knew have such trifling figures - Myanimelist. Here's a list of my favourite bishoujos cross-referenced with their MAL popularity.
Andou Mahoro (Mahoromatic)
MAL members' favourite - 78
Members in Fanclub - No fanclub
Mahoro has surprising some good measure of love given her show is considered vintage by the some. Someone needs to create a fanclub for the BEST-est maid in all of anime-dom.
Hinamori Amu (Shugo Chara)
MAL members' favourite - 471
Members in fanclub - 167
One of the best tsundere roles I've seen in recent anime. These numbers are not unexpected since Shugo Chara is fresh and the sequel is ongoing. The love is well-deserved though.
Shirakawa Kotori (Da Capo)
MAL members' favourite - 77
Members in fanclub - 105
77!!!?? This is an outrage! Our goddess deserves better! I blame DCSS. Hope the numbers pick up after Da Capo IF part 2.
Primula (SHUFFLE!)
MAL members' favourite - 107
Members in fanclub - 128
For an underdog in a widely condemned harem series, I'd say those are encouraging numbers. (Numbers may be conservative due to under-reporting by closet-lolicons.)
Iokawa Karada (Asatte no Houkou)
MAL members' favourite - 1 (That would be me)
Members in fanclub - No fanclub
The bishoujo who inspired this post and the number that boggled minds. Am I REALLY the only fan??
Fate Testarossa (Lyrical Nanoha)
MAL members' favourite - 687
Members in fanclub - 1901
That largest single character worship club in MAL. Although I do feel that the distinction between loli-Fate and StrikerS-Fate needs to be made. I'm sure we love them for different things after all.
Teletha Testarossa (Full Metal Panic!)
MAL members' favourite - 284
Members in fanclub - 161
Interesting that she has a hate club numbering to 13. More love, less hate!
Suzumiya Akane (Kimi ga nozomu eien)
MAL members' favourite - 27
Members in fanclub - No fanclub
How can there be a Haruka fan club but none for Akane? After all she's undoubtedly the best thing that happened in Kiminozo.
Yuasa Hiromi (True Tears)
MAL members' favourite - 60
Members in fanclub - 55
A humbling figure given that Noe has almost triple the numbers in both categories.
Asakura Otome (DCIISS)
MAL members' favourite - 19
Members in fanclub - No fanclub
What dismal numbers! Yume isn't too far behind either with only 18 favourites. I believe MAL hates Da Capo.
Given the relatively young MAL and its corresponding demography who generally favour the more recent anime, bishoujo from the older series understandably would be disadvantaged. But that is also why I'm shocked at Hiromi and Otome's numbers. These bishoujos were key to their series recent successes but somehow that didn't translate to fan love.
How about you? How loved are your favourite anime bishoujos?
PS: I did a quick check for Zyl's favourite chars - Nagato Yuki: 1423 fav, Katsura Hinagiku: 378, Lunamaria Hawke: 37. Looks like MAL hates GS too XD

“How loved are your favourite anime bishoujos?”
Wasn’t the answer to this always “Never enough”?

Hmm. The only ‘bishoujo’ for whom I have any lasting affection has three member favourites and no fanclub.

Blame Shinn for Lunamaria’s slide.

It doesn’t matter to me how popular my favourite anime bishoujos are as they will always have a special place in my otaku heart.

Well, we share the first three
When some people start looking to well-known MAL members (or just looking at what’s popular) for recommendations, tides get turned a bit.

Nosgoroth: That’s exactly how I’m feeling especially for Otome and Karada.
IKnight: Heh, time to start a club for her.
And who, if I may ask, might this bishoujo be?
Kabitzin : The state of Luna goods is quite telling too. Her 3rd PVC figure is always on clearance sales everywhere XD
Adun : Heh QFT! Just that every so often, you kinda feel that they deserve more love from the populace
Asrialys : Ah that explains the somewhat skewed statistics

It’s always nice when lots of other people think that your gf/wife is hawt but it doesn’t mean that you will love her any less if she’s not popular with other people. Or at least I hope so?
ALL HAIL LUNAMARIA HAWKE!! (Besides I’m very content with all the sweet Lunamaria merchandise I’ve gotten my hands on already. :3)

Not too bad.

maglor: Oh boy I don’t any Da Capo character at all XD Still I’m glad Kirino (Bamboo Blade)’s on the list! She is worthy!
Zyl: As we know, there are those who married not spouses but trophies.
While Lunamaria’s goods have trickled, the influx of Yuki and Hinaguki merchandise is just beginning… brace yourself! XD
DKellis: Yoriko is an interesting choice! Ack! She’s doing better than my 2 DC favourites combined! XD
Vin-nii: heh I think the anime deities need to bless us with better tsunderes. Too many tsundere wannabes siphoning limelight from TRUE tsundere charm.

Asatte no Houkou FTW! It was one of the most original shows I’ve ever seen, and while my memory of it is a little foggy, I know it was great.
But that aside, Shiori has a decent number of supporters, though not nearly as much as Mai. The ef girls are also generally quite well liked, and of course Haruhi has tons of supporters (though not as many as Yuki).
On the other hand, Hourglass of Summer was my first VN and I quite like Kaho, but no one seems to have noticed her >_>

ETERNAL: Shiori was on on my top ten til she was displaced by Asakura Otome lately XD But yeah I personally thought Shiori’s arc to be one of the most well-executed in KyoAni’s Kanon.
maglor: I believe DC enjoys more love in the Land of the Rising Sun

Neya/Neeya from Infinite Ryvius. I think you’ve mentioned her on this blog before?
January 26th, 2009 - 22:37
Ooooh… Neeya. She is worthy indeed. I remember being dissed for proclaiming Neeya to be one of the reasons for catching IR. I still stand by those words. One of the most memorable SUNRISE girls for me.
