Chara Design as a necessarius condition

Like totali, the latest episode of Kannagi has gotten me rooting [Kabitzin Geass canceller ACTIVATE!] cheering for Tsugumi too. But, in our previous discussions, Stripey won't even place Tsugumi in the running. The reason? He didn't like her hair style and her large forehead.

Well, fair enough, I steadfastly refused to watch his favourite series of KyoAni-KEY hell, especially AIR. Just because I dislike the chara design, particularly the eyes, so much. I only succumbed to Kanon because of SaYuri.

So one could go on and on about the plot, the characterization, the animation budget etc. etc. (or the lack thereof) but I'm sure we've all had a series or two that we just could not and still cannot bring ourselves to watch or how we can't bring ourselves to support a particular character simply because we think that the chara design is fugly. Like beauty, it may only be a shallow response to something that's just skin deep. But deep down we just gotta have something that's pleasing to our beholder's eye.

Just like the time when Stripey was explaining to this DVD store clerk why he wasn't going to buy Nanoha StrikerS after splurging on the As boxset, rattling off all his deeeeep reasons, when I just couldn't resist piping up from the other end of the store: 'Well, his real reason is cuz Fate isn't loli anymore! Ahaha~♥' TSUGUMI REVENGE!!

  1. I totally understand! I have not watched a single minute of ANY of the Key series, and it is completely because of the character designs. As for Tsugumi’s forehead, it is an evolutionary adaptation that allows her to destroy things by smashing her forehead into them.

  2. You need to drag Stripey into the side of darkn light some more. He needs to open his mind a bit more. Tsugumi is love. :3

And I try not to let character designs affect what I think about a character, though it does help if the design seems to compliment things well. For example, I’m not sure I’d think of Tsugumi as adorable as she is if she didn’t look the way she did while acting like she does.

  3. Kabitzin: I think you didn’t watch xxxHOLIC for the same reason? I actually quite liked that design though the first season was a bit draggy and Watanuki was annoying. But Kei was soooo good.

TheBigN: Stripey has already confessed to Zange.

  4. Perhaps Stripey doesn’t like eggs, vegetables, or eggs and vegetables?

I actually read a majority of the xxxHOLIC manga eventually… and I came to the exact same conclusion as you did. I guess I can forgive strangely drawn bodies easier than strangely drawn faces.

  5. To the point that it looks like she has a receding hairline! XD To be honest, Kannagi’s bishoujo designs aren’t quite up my alley. Beside the hair, I also thought Tsugumi doesn’t have a small enough waist.

Don’t quite like Nagi’s odd fringe and eyebrows either but hey, it’s more than compensated by a pair of the most beautiful thighs in all of animedom. Still, maybe that explains why Zange’s my fav.

That said, the design barrier can be overcome. SHUFFLE! had terrible designs imho (mainly due to incompatible colour schemes). In fact Asa was the worst with her asymmetric hair. Yet see how I love her after ep 8. :) Tsugumi needs to work harder for tanuki love. :P
