hontou ni Stripey Insists Sisters Cry Oniichan Now

It's all been said already but I'm still going to say it: The Strike Witches' logistics side seriously needs to indent them some pants. And the crotch shots were pure orz multipliers.

Oddly enough, I still decided to give this series a go because two of my favourite doujin artists/circles, chanomi and tamago no oheya, seem to have picked up on a heart of yuri-tinged comedy gold underneath all the awful fanservicey elements.

I've only seen the first four episodes. So far I'm really liking Mio's HOHOHO and Minna's Latent Tanaka Rie Evilness as well as the chara interaction but I'm not sure if it'll be worth my while to continue. Perhaps I need to go wash to bring out my inner evil.

  1. You may have a better chance of enjoying Sky girls instead. SG is typical JCStaff. Endearing characters with coherent plot that builds itself up unhurriedly but steadily. Nothing very spectacular but you come away satisfied with this lingering warm, fuzzy feeling.

  2. LOL! No, they all have heterosexual love interests. Got bro-con though. A serious case.

Come to think of it, Sky Girls is JCStaff’s Evangelion, only fluffier XD

  3. Yo, Stripey, Hinagiku’s seiyuu got married to Yukiji’s…

    Via Sankaku complex

  4. Nice one, Haess.

But I think j1m0ne’s comment in response to the Sankaku post is spot-on: It’s just fanservice. Kinda like Nakahara Mai x Shimizu Ai PV for Himitsu Dolls.

  5. IIRC I was able to tolerate Strike Witches until around halfway into the first ep before going “Oh sod this”…
And just to put things in perpective, I was able to tolerate the hentai-ripoff char designs in Divergence Eve and the Amazing Disintegrating Textiles of Ikkitousen without much trouble.

Sky Girls is at least a lot more tolerable in the fanservice departement. (As in doesn’t poke your eyes out with it.)

  6. Haesslich: heh you sure you got the news to the right hontouni brother? :P

Watchman: Actually I don’t consider Sky girls fanservicey. :) Maybe I have been too fixated on Karen. XD

  7. O_o
    Two Words(tm): flight suits.

At least they wear sane uniforms the *rest* of the time.

  8. Yeah, well. The stupendously hackneyed premise wasn’t really helping any; it wasn’t the *good* kind of “wtflol” dumb, IMHO.

  9. Stripey: Hina’s the imoutu… so I figured it was a two-fer. ;)

  10. Episodes 5 and 7 are utter crap. If you want to be dissuaded from watching the rest of the series, watch them, and then you’ll give up. If you want to give yourself a chance to see the whole rest of the series, skip 5 and 7. Come back and watch them later.

  11. Yeah, I’ve put up with Strike Witches because of Minna and Mio too. Was focusing more on the face than the pantsu.

Hmm… Does the Shizu-sama Doctrine apply for you in Sky Girls? :)

  12. Watchman, it does seem that Japanese fan dumb loves Strikes Witches though… Cover of Megami 103.

SDB, thanks for the advice. I have read the ep summaries though and found that the ending was quite the WTF though…

Dav, gah! Shizu-sama Doctrine has been invoked. I must investigate this further…

  13. The Japanese fandumb is notorious for having a kind of creepy fetish for pantsu and worrisomely young girls. That’s the whole raison d’

  14. @ Zyl
Be sure to catch the Sky Girls DVD specials if you decide to delve into the series. ;)

  15. I came up with a retcon for the ending that I think makes sense of it, but I doubt it’s what the director had in mind. But for later, once you’ve seen the ending for yourself, here it is:

  16. Watchman, it’s not just the Japanese fan dumb. ;)

Dav, argh, now you’ve got me even more curious. Stripey didn’t mention anything about this even though he’s been trying to tempt me to watch Sky Girls…

SDB, thanks. I’ll check it out as and when I managed to get enough bandwidth to getto the rest of the series.
