WANTED – Spring/Summer anime recommendations

This must be the nuclear winter of my anime passion. Since embarking on new employment in March, time has become such a precious commodity that I've only managed to complete 2 series from the Spring and Summer broadcasts - Code Geass R2 and DCIISS (both of which I enjoyed tremendously.) Of course, I'm currently still pursuing Wagaga no oinarisama (ep 21) and Nogizaka Haruka no himitsu (ep 10) but just haven't found enough motivation for the sprint to the finale. Currently stuck at the birthday ep for Nogizaka (which reeks of cliches) and the Momiji arc for Wagaya (what if they screwed up the arc of the hottest girl in Wayaga!?!). That's not all. I'm also at the concluding eps for Mahoraba (ep 22) and Seto no Hanayome (ep 22). Heck, my records at MAL tells me I'm also one ep short of completing Clannad and Bamboo Blade is frozen at the magical number, yes, 22. So just what's wrong with me?

Possibly besides the time factor, there must be a subconscious suppression of the urge to finish the series, anticipating the emptiness and uncertainty (of meeting the next worthy production) that follows. But like the wise said, "there's no better way to get over the last than with the next.", here's an appeal for recommendations of the recent Spring/Summer series. I have Blassreiter on my list at the moment since it comes highly recommended by Zyl and Mentar.

Noting that I enjoy, drama, bishoujo, coherent plots and endearing characters, which of these Spring/Summer productions would you recommend for tanuki consumption?

  1. i guess i’m not the only one who can’t help but fail to watch the final episodes of series….
i for one skipped an ep or two of the final eps of bamboo blade…
i haven’t even watched the last ep of higurashi yet…

i haven’t really watched many new series in spring and summer, though i have a ton to watch this fall, but…
since you didn’t mention Macross Frontier in the things you watched…
    that’s what i’ll recommend…
it also has a great soundtrack that doesn’t disappoint…

you could also watch Candy Boy
    it’s a nice yuri series…

and also the 3 Kara no Kyokai movies…
nice set of films with length of each film only ranging from 45minutes to 1 hour…

you could also watch Vampire Knight for a shoujo anime fix…
and Soul Eater for a bit of shounen anime fix(though it’s not like those endless shounen anime since this one’s been slated for only 51 eps)…

ps: this is not really a spring/summer 2008 season anime…
but you could also try Darker than Black

  2. Macross Frontier, and LOGH because you have probably seen neither. Other than that you could catch up on Gundam 00. Otherwise why not take a gamble on some of the currently airing shows like ef or Nodame?

  3. From spring Kaiba, it’s a SF,love story anime. Don’t let the animation style make you think it’s boring. You get to like the characters alot and the story will keep you guessing.

And, Toshokan Sensou, for nice action, good animation, and a good group of characters. The two main characters remind of the main characters from Planetes.

From summer, I’d recommend Natsume Yuujin-chou, it’s a supernatural slice-of-life series. The stories are interesting and I love the characters.

Also, Ryoko’s Case Files, another show with good animation and enjoyable characters. Some people complained that the cases appear to random at the beginning but later on it’s shown how many of them are related.

Of the bunch I’d probably recommend Natsume the most. And you should finish Clannad, the OVA and the second season -so far- have been great. Looking at your MAL list I’d definitely recommend watching Minami-Ke.

  4. Well, I am not sure if Kaiba will be a show that the Tanuki will watch, considering his general harem instincts meaning that unconventional animation might be a minus. I will think in terms of the last two seasons, one series that can make you particularly happy will be Macross Frontier. There is huge romance, and there are 2 extremely parallel female leads that will make you go O_O.

  5. Macross Frontier and Ryoko’s Case Files are worth a look, in my opinion. For the new season, Kannagi is an endearing and funny bet, though Hyakko would be good if you like some comedy and slice of life (WARNING: it starts slowly).

And boo, not even finished CLANNAD? It’s a prerequisite to appreciate After Story, y’know.

  6. Oh, and to sneak in one more title: Allison and Lillia. The animation quality is a little on the middling side, but the source material alone should pique your interest (it’s done by the same author that wrote Kino’s Journey).

  7. I’m kinda stuck at episode 9 of Nogizaka Haruka too, sigh… no motivation to finish it, along with other shows of the summer. But now it’s fall! And I’m gonna skip that first and watch the Fall offerings.

I say WATCH TOSHOKAN SENSOU!!! It’s a truly endearing and enjoyable series, just don’t expect much and don’t be cynical! :P

For summer, watch Natsume Yuujinchou, especially if you’re up for a relaxing / heartwarming mood.

And, if anything, you can always decide to move out of spring or summer and time leap to Fall (I’d recommend Skip Beat! (you have to watch this Stripey *__*), Kannagi, ToraDora) :P

  8. Isn’t the lack of finishing momentum re: Seto no Hanayome due mainly to lack of subs (weak seed strength after a year) rather than motivation? Even Nauzron the Tanuki Waifu enjoys it! :)

  9. Casshern, Kannagi and Kemeko DX are the ones I like the most from this season. From what I’ve seen (first two episodes) those three looked quite promising. You might want to check out Tora Dora, too. Judging by your previous posts, I think Kannagi, Tora Dora, and Kemeko DX might be your taste. ^^ Michiko and Hacchin aired yesterday, too… I should check it out after tom’s test.

  10. Time for the servant of J.C.Staff to recommend J.C.Staff shows.

Unfortunately, while Nabari (Spring) and Slayers (Summer) had their good points, they didn’t exactly blow you away with awesomeness. And Familiar of Zero 3, like the second season before it, might as well not exist.

    - begin J.C.Staff fanboy gush mode -

Fortunately, this Fall there’s a series that could be one of the best that J.C.Staff has ever done. It’s To Aru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index), and it’s directed by Azumanga Daioh’s director, Hiroshi Nishikiori. It’s a fantasy action series with superpowered students, with an atmosphere like Shana, but (judging from the first episodes at least) better in every way. The male lead is cool and very likeable, the girls are moeblob-cute, the magic and action are beautiful, and there are genuinely funny moments.

Some people have complained about the excessive loli factor of Magical Index, but I suspect it’d be a plus rather than a minus for you.

  11. Thanks all for your recs!

kaz3phyrous: Actually I was enjoying Darker than Black until about ep 16.. looking fwd to finishing the series sometime. Hoping it doesn’t fizzle out like many BONES series XD Yin FTW!!!

Crusader: Planning to catch ef~melody. Actually I’ve previewed a couple of series for Fall and it’s shaping up to be a promising season! Maybe I should skip Spring/Summer series and dive into the current season.

thenullset/Myssa Rei: Seems like I need to take a look at Ryoko case files! Just finished Clannad and ready for more Mei goodness in the After story!

Impz: TOok a look at Kaiba caps and ermm you’re right… not quite my preferred animation style XD As for MF actually I managed 9 eps and plan to finish it someday if only for the awesome missile spams. :P

usagijen: Will check out Skip Beat! Time to broaden my anime horizons :) Heard good things about Kannagi too, so will be giving that a shot. :)

Zyl: Chinese subs FTW! Looking fwd to finishing up Seto this weekend.

muhootsaver: Saw ep 1 of Toradora. Promising so far though the generic premise means it can easily fall into mediocrity. Hope it keeps from the cliche traps XD

Sixten: Great rec! I’m enjoying “A certain magical index” tremendously. Luuurve the art. Such beautiful rendering of eyes!

  12. Have you seen the most recent episode of the Clannad After-Story stripey????…..Mei-Chan ftw!

  13. I’d do a Da Capo if I were Sunohara!!!!! XD Check out the Nemu-esque ribbons!
