Gurren Lagann – Opening Salvo
Man, Gainax and their sexy 14 yr olds. But thanks to them, Evangelion thrives beyond a decade and I managed to enjoy my 1st ep of Gurren Lagann. Yoko was awesome (love girls with humongous erm... weapons) but Kamina was near unbearable. It's just that I've heard so much about him being GAR and ep 1 portrays him to a flamboyant loudmouth with guts inhibiting the brain cavity. If Kamina is supposedly the fullest representation of GAR, then I fully understand why Zyl has a very poor opinion of GAR characters. Still, I've been warned to give the characters time to develop and I hope Kamina will grow on me.
Gurren Lagann come highly recommended from very trusted sources (several friends whose anime standards I trust, including Zyl) and I'm excited about the series. After all it has been touted to be Gainax's comeback series with Mai-HiMEsque moments and the epic of Eureka 7. Now if only I can get the .mp4 ep 2 to work on my Quicktime.

You have to watch every single episode.
And remember to clench your teeth. Each episode is like a punch in the face from a giant fist made of pure GAR.

Mai-Hime-esque? Really? It might have the epic scale of Eureka 7 yes. (on much more crazier standard) But as far as Mai-Hime goes these two are relatively strangers. Don’t get me wrong though, TTGL is an amazing show that keeps you on your toes never willing to let you go until the very last second of the very last episode. Its a fantastic ride, I just found it weird that someone would compare it to Mai-Hime. Interesting if I may so?

But Kamina is indeed the inspiration of everything GAR in this show, in my opinion. I hope you can see where my point is coming from as you carry on.

Well, Gurren Lagann is apparently so GAR that it can make women pregnant just from watching. I don’t know that since I have only watched 4 eps. It just didn’t grab my attention, but I might watch it now that you brought it up xD

Harlock is Epitome of Gar
Kamina is a gar wannabe, only reason he stands out so much is because of the lack of real Gar in recent anime.

Stripey: A fair warning, the series only truly hits its stride after the introduction of Nia (and even then, only around episode 12-ish), so prepare to grit your teeth with the detours (especially the one-episode art shift of Episode 4). Also, keep in mind that TTGL is a homage to old-style SR shows, so expect some silliness intersped with the out-there mecha action.
Then there’s the Second Half (post episode 16)… Oh my.

crimson: GAR is best explained with examples. If you know Jin Yong’s Tian Long ba bu, Qiao Feng in the story is GAR.

ugh, I regret to say that I only have knowledge of Sheng Diao (from the anime and bits n pieces of memoirs from real action version).
Now I’m watching hk Condor Hero 1994 so it would be great if you have some references of GAR from there (or perhaps from recent titles since I have yet to catch harlock or galaxy999 which i think he’s from).
I guess meantime I’ll take it that Kamina is a viable framework for GAR too
