My DVD wantlist

With myanimelist, my (now-defunct) 'anime viewlist' was virtually redundant. So I've replaced it with a 'DVD list' tab instead to keep track on my DVD collection and wantlist.

After some experience with collecting figures and artbooks, I realised the importance of having a wantlist to curb impulse buys. The principle is simple - Buy only what's on the list. Of course a stringent process has been put in place to ensure only the most worthy of anime makes the list. BTW this post is partly inspired by my order of Full metal panic ~ The second raid DVD boxset during the 40% Funimation discount at TheRightStuf.

Here's sharing my list and my hope for their DVD (hopefully boxsets) releases soon.

5 centimeter per second - Soon. I can smell the Taiwanese R3s already.
Aria the animation - Still contemplating the R3s. Going for S$150 for 6 DVDs.
Asatte no houkou - I don't suppose I would see a R1 for this.
Claymore - Could use a stronger ending but a great show nevertheless.
Code Geass - Will get this even if R2 bombs.
Dennou Coil - Featuring some of the best cyber battles in anime.
Ef ~ a tale of memories - Can I just buy the Chihiro bits?
Iriya no Sora, UFO no natsu - Is this even licensed anywhere?
Kanon 2006 - Boxset please.
Macross Zero - Did I miss this license?
Nanoha As - Haven't seen the R1s or R3s either. Am I not looking hard enough?
ROD TV - Need an economical R1 boxset. R3s going for several hundreds.
Seirei no moribito - One of the finest of 2007.
SHUFFLE - Should I just get the Kaede arc?
True Tears - Surely one of the finest in 2008?

Hoping to add Code Geass R2 on this list. Fail us not SUNRISE!

  1. Code Geass – Will get this even if R2 bombs.

Don’t know about anything aside from R1, but over here in the states it’s going to be airing on AS at the end of April, so we can’t count on DVDs to start releasing until late summer at least. Which means almost 2 years between the start of airing and a DVD release. And they wonder why DVD sales are down…

    Nanoha As – Haven

  2. Asatte no houkou – I don

  3. Having the DVD wishlist is definitely key…I ended up putting a hard cap on how many DVDs I buy a year, just to keep my anime library from growing completely out of control. Having what’s coming out listed out makes it easier to make the tough decisions on what to buy. I’m still waiting for Da Capo to hit region 1, but I’ll probably wait forever on that one…

  4. As stated, Nanoha and Nanoha A’s are in limbo because Geneon USA got cremated. They’re supposedly looking for someone else to pick it up for distribution. We know dub/sub work is still being conducted (one of the AS posters is actually a known translator who’s still doing work on it).

The series Karin (the blood-giving vampire) is also in limbo for the same reason which is horrible because it already had 3 volumes released.

Kanon R1 is caught in the ADV “we’re so unprofessional we can’t even keep our lies straight so we just don’t say anything” mess. They keep releasing street dates but were hugely short-stocked on volume 1 & 2(with box or without) and have missed their volume 3 street date by a month, though they’re taking volume 4 pre-orders.

Makes it kind of hard to support the industry when they seem so unprofessional.

  5. Calawain: Gao! Missed the ROD offer! Thanks for the info. Looks like I need to start looking at R3 releases for Nanoha As. For such a popular series, I wonder what the holdup is all about. :)

Zyl: Actually the R3 releases for Asatte is already out. 6 vols but as usual, they are cutthroat. XD I guess I could still fall back on them if we don’t see R1s :)

suguru: Would you mind R3s? Since the Taiwanese licensee for Da Capo died, the DVD set is being sold at severely reduced prices (8 DVDs at $150 Singapore dollar). If you are keen, I could snag them and have them mailed to you. :)

vexx: Looks like another reason to go R3s for Kanon. XD Good to hear that there’s a sliver of hope for that As’ release in the near future. I need my Gundam-esque loli mahou shoujos! XD

  6. For Byousoku 5cm, I suggest getting the R2 Limited Box edition. It’s totally worth the money, since there’s a soundtrack that comes with it, and a random film cell strip too.

  7. Thanks for the highlight. :) Personally I prefer R1s or R3s so that I can try to propagate the anime passion to the uninitiated.

  8. Here is my dvd list:

Stripey, you miss the Genon sale last year where they had the entire box available for $28

For Shuffle, I am waiting for the box set. I bought the Noein single for $45 then they rls a box set for $25 :( never again i vow

EF – I doubt with the current market this will get rls in R1.

Nanoha – Heard either MB or Funi has it.

  9. Kara no Kyoukai?! Type Moon fans have been waiting on this forever. DVD’s hit next month.

  10. You can always wait for the blu-ray realeases. That’s what I’m doing for all the new series since I don’t want to double dip. By the way, 5cm/s is getting a blu-ray release in Japan, so you might want to consider blu-ray for that title. ^^

  11. Xellos-_^: thanks for the info. I think i’ll hold out for As. Taiwan will surely license Ef so I probably turn to them for R3s :)

Beowulf Lee: I’ll have to see it first to decide :)

muhootsaver: heh blu-ray would be great except that it cost an arm and leg to get the disc and the player now. Maybe in a couple of years then it becomes more common and affordable :)

  12. I appreciate the offer, it’s tempting…but sadly, usually I watch anime on my work laptop, which has a region 1-only DVD drive T_T I’ll have to settle for Otoboku hitting R1 this June for my bishoujo fix :)

  13. Actually there’s are several solutions for hardware region-crippled drives:

It works beautifully for me on Windows XP (haven’t tested it on Vista and hope never to have to :) ).

  14. suguru: Oh I didn’t know Otoboku will be getting a R1 release! :)

vexx: Thanks! Now I can play my Mahoro R2s on my notebook :P

  15. Ef ~ a tale of memories – Can I just buy the Chihiro bits?

I actually wanted the Miyako buts more
