Hinagikuism :: Manga Vol.8 Ch 79-82

V08C79. Hina's stepmom makes herself scarce (beauty parlour then meeting up with Yukiji) in order to let our pinkhaired heroine enjoy a home-cooked dinner with just Hayate. They bump into each other as Hina prepares to shop for groceries but her attempt to confront Hayate about his relationship with Ayumu 'Hamster' Nishizawa is derailed when he asks her about what she likes to eat. And Hina's favourite foods are curry and hamburgers - which are apparently common 'favourite foods' of guys. (What would be stereotypical girly favourite foods?) Their conversation continues to be at cross purposes, with Hayate behaving normally but Hinagiku becoming increasingly irritated due to the Hamster factor. But they still look couplely enough, ah light hearted high schoolers' conversation; die couples die ;)

V08C80. Hayate amazes Hinagiku with his incredible cooking skills. Even though curry and hamburger are simple dishes (and also easy to screw up), Hina detects and expresses her appreciation of Hayate's many subtle mods and flourishes to the dishes. [Actually it's Hayate who makes the curry and Hina the hamburger.] However she starts to become troubled when Hayate talks about how he has learnt to perfect these dishes for 'her' sake. Hayate, of course, means so that he can be a better butler to Nagi but what Hinagiku misunderstands that it's for the sake of his girlfriend, Nishizawa. The accidental hand-touching over the teapot goes nowhere but reminds us of the underlying attraction and romantic tension between the two.

V08C81. Interesting cover with Nishizawa and Hinagiku tied to each other by a red ribbon. Even with yuri goggles at max it's not still plausible or even entertaining in a funny way. But it goes to show how their friendship is a serious block on Hinagiku's ability to even acknowledge her own feelings.

The evening conversation becomes increasingly tense; Hina asks Hayate who he'd rather share a bath with Maria, Nishizawa or her? He doesn't give any clear answer except for a blanket denial and definitely not Yukiji. The penny finally drops that Hayate does not have a girlfriend and Hinagiku finally realizes that Hayate heard but did not accept Nishizawa's confession. And it finally dawns on Hinagiku that she is spending the night in the house with an unattached Hayate. She feels the house for the conbini but runs in a roast sweet potato munchin' Nishizawa. She feels rather conflicted and guilty that Hayate is at her house even though she had said she would support Nishizawa. And, of course, Hayate has to show up with his usual perfect timing. Nishizawa runs away, thinking that Hina and Hayate look like newly weds (darou? :3) but Hina easily catches up.

V08C82. Hina and Hamster return to the Katsura home. Plus a kitten, to Hayate's surprise. As the two girls have their girl talk, Nishizawa tries to probe Hinagiku's feelings for Hayate. Hinagiku also finally (Vol.8!) learns of Hayate's history of being abandoned by his parents with an enormous debt. Given her own history, instant empathy. 'This person... And I. We have been holding to the same pain.' (p.111) But the moment is ruined by cat's pee. I do so hate these deus ex machina copouts but I suppose it also sets the scene for continued Hina dilemma. *cue Kannazuki ED Agony*

As Hina takes a bath, Nishizawa talks to her through the screen door. The hamster recognizes Hina's coolness but the conversation leads back to Hinagiku pledging her support to Nishizawa yet again. I really hope that she's not doing this out of guilt and pity for Nishizawa because that's not fair to either of them. Sometimes swiftly crushing the opposition is the more merciful option. But it seems that the coolness that Nishizawa and many others see in Hina seems to evaporate when it comes to her feelings for Hayate, revealing a more complex, well-rounded and altogether more interesting character. I've browsed ahead and it was quite nice how Hina's grudge against Hayate, all the way back from the special marathon, was resolved. Right now, I'm really looking forward to reaching that point.

Meanwhile, as Maria is tucking Nagi into bed, the latter finally has recovered enough to ask for Hayate's return. There's a bit of Hina in the next section, tearful farewell to the kitten but no significant plot point.

  1. More Hinagiku..
One of my favorite character in Hayate No Gotoku!
I never read the manga but I absolutely love the anime..
It’s sad to see that the anime will end soon..
I’m gonna miss the anime A LOT after it ends..

  2. I’m not sure that I’ll miss the anime… severe lack of Hinagiku in it. I will Shizuka Itou’s brilliant work as Hinagiku though. Hope we’ll see more of her in the manga.

  3. Zyl, how far have you read by now? I don’t think you’ve been catching up to the actual raws yet? (Recently, a biiiig 4-chapter Hina arc had its conclusion in c.164)

Did you at least reach vol.10 yet?

Anyway, great Hinagikuism posts, you can be SURE that it will be gobbled up by many many fans! ^_^

  4. Mentar, I’ve browsed up to Vol.13 but didn’t actually read/translate the dialogue beyond these posts – the first two chapters of Vol.10 look very promising though – finally back to ‘Hayate-kun’ from ‘Ayasaki-kun’! So I’m still pretty far behind.

Thanks for the heads up. The seed strength on the Vol.14 raws is almost non-existent though. :( Someone helppu mi purisu!

[Add: Got it! Thanks, seeders! The ferris scene in Vol.14 was really lovely!]

  5. Send me an email with a FTP server to upload to, and I can hook you up with the _really_ exciting latest chapters.

The least I can do for a fellow Hinagikuist ;)

  6. Thanks, Mentar! That’s most kind of you. Email sent!

  7. Werent chaps 162-164 adorable? Hina at her best ^_^

  8. …for some reason I’m starting to get the feeling I’m watching some shady bloke peddle dodgy pills in a dark alley here… -_-;

“Damn, I sure wish I knew if this was real or just my usual paranoia!”

  9. Mentar: Do you mean Volume 14, or something later?

You know this will end badly – if there’s a pairing that looks like it’s meant to happen.. it never will.

  10. Mwahahaha, the good stuffs. I haz it!

If my count is correct, Ch 162-164 should span the last chapter of Vol.15 and first two chapters of Vol.16

  11. Haesslich: Well, of course Nagi is the designated match, IF there is any match at all. However, Hina is the only character with a _real_ non-reset love story going on, and 162-164 were just adorable ;)

Brief summary for 162-164 in the spoilers

  12. I figured you were a lapsed Hinagikuist, to judge by lack of commentary on pictures like the above. Hata-sensei’s been putting up a lot of little sketches like this, although this one he set up for printing purposes, ergo the PDF vector.

And they also have the translated version of the Parthenon visit… in high-res.

  13. Volume 10 chapter 98’s been translated, with the excellent view.

PS: You’re still a lapsed Hinagikuist. Time to get back with the program.

  14. Haha :)

I was just returning here to tell Zyl the same thing ^_^

Other than that, Hinagikuists can redeem themselves by voting for her in Saimoe and Best Moe. Hina reached the final 16 in Best Moe and final 32 in Saimoe already. Time to put her over the top!

  15. Thanks again for the heads up.

To the charges of being a lapsed Hingakuist, I plead guilty while facerubbing my Hina-chan towel. Ahaha~ ♥

  16. Hinagiku-san would kill you for doing that ecchi sort of thing.

  17. Would she? I’m not sure – in the manga, Hina hasn’t shown particular aversion against ecchiness. Remember her night in the haunted Academy together with Hayate, where she teased him “what’s with that look Hayate, wanna see?” when she caught him looking at her ‘cleavage’? ;)

I mean, she definitely isn’t Mahoro in this aspect.

Oh, and Zyl: Dang, I envy you ^_^

  18. Mentar: She has a thing for being PROPER, which is where the idea of a character towel (especially with her on it) being used to dry faces and other otaku parts would mortify her. Besides, if it involves her image.. she is somewhat protective of that.

Beyond which, at least with her pretending to flash Hayate she was controlling the level of service.
