It's been 2 years since my post on losers in love and many debutant bishoujos have shown themselves worthy of this list. Hence here's a revised and expanded tribute to of some of the most heartbroken bishoujos in anime.
In ascending order of love.
True Tears ▼ Show
Andou Aiko - Man, I thought she could join Shigure Asa as the other onee-san winner in harems
Onegai Teacher ▼ Show
Herikawa Koishi - Why Kei chose Mizuho over Herikawa remains one of the greatest mysteries in animedom.
Fate/Stay night ▼ Show
Matou Sakura - If only she had taken ownership of Shirou instead of the apron.
Tokimeki Memorial ~ Only love ▼ Show
Yayoi Mina - Too bad she was too caught up red-herring Tsukasa.
Zero no Tsukaima ▼ Show
Siesta (Zero no Tsukaima) - Common meido FTW!
Kimi ga nozomu eien ▼ Show
Suzumiya Akane - I greatly respect Takayuki for not jumping her in the cab. It's not your fault, Akane chan!
Love Hina ▼ Show
Maehara Shinobu - Naru may be good girlfriend material but Shinobu is PERFECT wife material. Couldn't you wait a couple of years, Keitaro?
Toheart ▼ Show
Nagaoka Shiho - There. was. NO. fighting. chance. My sympathy to her utterly crushing defeat.
Clannad ▼ Show
Fujibayashi Kyou - What?! Tomoya resisted your thigh-high buffet?!
Megadere ▼ Show
Emelenzia - He can't be human if he could resist a light haired, twintailed tsundere loli. Yes, it's probably for the better, E-chan.
Shana ▼ Show
Yoshida Kazumi (Shana) - The price for your love is too high!
Onegai Twins ▼ Show
Onodera Karen - You should have doctored the diary.
Ef ~ A tale of memories ▼ Show
Shindou Kei - If you haven't been such a prude, it'd be Miyako stumbling on your victory in bed with onii-chan.
Sola ▼ Show
Morimiya Aono - Sigh, if only Matsuri hasn't been so meddling.
True Tears ▼ Show
Isurugi Noe - Lost not set in stone though the writing is on the wall.
Kimikiss ~ pure rouge ▼ Show
Hoshino Yuumi - We need a Kimikiss Alternative where Yuumi wins.
5 centimeters per second ▼ Show
Sumita Kanae - Poor gal, there's just no place for her in Takaki's heart.
Ai yori aoshi ~ Enishi ▼ Show
Tina Foster - Not even a confession! The tragedy!
Da Capo ▼ Show
Yoshino Sakura - Siscon triumphs lolicon. Stripey-approved.
SHUFFLE! ▼ Show
Fuyou Kaede - If only the sneak bed-attack had been more aggressive...
Full Metal Panic ~ TSR ▼ Show
Teletha Testarossa - Tessa's rank/position is inhibiting her happiness.
Kanon ▼ Show
Minase Nayuki - I hope Yuuichi reincarnates as a snow bunny.
Canvas 2 ▼ Show
Kikyou Kiri - Ouch, the pain of getting whipped by a 16 yr old blond beauty.
Kagihime Monogatari ▼ Show
Arisugawa Arisu - "I exist because you're in love with your sister!" That must REALLY hurt.
Da Capo Second Season ▼ Show
Shirakawa Kotori - Forever, my favourite loser in love.
I hope it's not Mao (Kimikiss) or Hiromi (True tears) replacing Yuumi and Noe in my next edition.

You should try this list for male characters as well. There are some surprisingly worthy males who didn’t get the girl. Our household favorite is Tanda from Seirei no Moribito.
You should also include one of the most popular heroine in the 80s who lost to elder ‘Sour Puss.’ Lynn Minmei from Macross.
March 6th, 2008 - 09:23
is it a good thing or a bad thing i seem to know most of the names out there…
March 6th, 2008 - 09:28
Kirino, from Gift, really deserves a spot on this list. She was rejected twice – once brutally so in the past and once in the present – after being the closest person to the object of her affection for years in both instances. Man, Haruhiko was both an idiot and an asshole.
March 6th, 2008 - 09:57
LOL Aiko has a boyfriend already and he’s actually a really nice guy! OTOH, I know what you are getting at. She even had the childhood friend advantage, too!
March 6th, 2008 - 10:22
Yeah. I remember putting down Elis on this list before scratching it out at the end of Canvas 2. I hope I don’t have to do that again with True Tears.
Looks like someone is still stabbing away at his Junichi voodoo doll.
Lol. “Siscon triumphs lolicon. Stripey-approved.” is a great line for a bumper sticker.
March 6th, 2008 - 10:47
maglor: Heh, the most outstanding male loser in love for me has to be Souma (Kannazuki no Miko) XD Tanda will eventually get together with Balsa. After she takes care of some family chores at her home country that is
abao: Looking at my unhealthy obsession with 2D beauty, I’d say it’s a good thing
Kefit: Ah Kirino surely deserves a spot here.
3rd edition here we go!
Kabitzin: Heh, Nobuse would top my male version of this list. Hope all it changes with the next few eps of TT.
koneko-chan: Elise was what inspired the first list
March 6th, 2008 - 12:35
Thank you for your vote of confidence in Noe… I hope you eat your words. You also slander the good man Nobuse, your lack of faith is appalling. When you are proven wrong I demand a public apology for your anti-Noe and anti-Nobuse propaganda.
How the hell can you blast Kei for not putting out?! Miya Miya was a needy bitch who puts out on a daily basis. Just because onii-chan was an effeminate artist that had a severe case of the stupid does not mean that Kei had to lower herself to his level.
March 6th, 2008 - 13:41
My two cents:
Herikawa Koishi (Onegai Teacher) – She was bumped to third place by the end of the show. Kei admits that had Mizuho not existed, he probably would’ve chosen Ichigo.
Suzumiya Akane (Kimi ga nozomu eien) – She deserves better.
Maehara Shinobu (Love Hina) – Keitaro is a masochist and he prefers violent possessive girls. Hey, everyone has different tastes.
Nagaoka Shiho (ToHeart) – Still not game over. Hiroyuki hasn’t crossed the line yet and Akari is still his childhood friend. She may not fight for him, but as long as she is present there is still a chance. But it will take some time…
Fujibayashi Kyou (Clannad) – My secret hopes for Tomoya-Kyou and Sunohara-Tomoyo went out the window, but it would’ve been VERY interesting had it come about…
Onodera Karen (Ongeai Twins) – My advice: pick up the light novels.
Shindou Kei (Ef ~ a tale of memories) – She was already starting to get exasperated by Hiro’s antics and was showing signs of letting go. Seeing that dastardly sight was merely the last straw.
Isurugi Noe (True Tears) – Look on the bright side; if she loses it will be because Shin turns out to be a loser and she will be the one to dump HIM.
Hoshino Yuumi (Kimikiss ~ pure rouge) – How about a KimiKiss alternative where the characters are truer to their origins, and the plot isn’t hacked?
Yoshino Sakura (Da Capo) – Siscon triumphs over childhood promise sealed by supernatural elements. It has to be an anime first.
Minase Nayuki (Kanon) – The two manga versions show the potential of a Yuuichi-Nayuki relationship. This relationship leaves a better impression on me as it seems to be more of a relationship among equals. I could totally see Nayuki taking on a motherly/oneesan role with the other girls.
Kikyou Kiri (Canvas 2) – She tried but she was floored by a juggernaut. And when push came to shove, Hiroki truly believed that Yanagi loved Kiri more – which is why he gave them every opportunity to be together. And with Yanagi pursuing the path of a teacher, he might get there…
Arisugawa Arisu (Kagihime Monogatari) – Amusing in that the two girls tried to play hot potato and hand Aruto to the other one. Alas, Kiraha’s true feelings were revealed in the worst way… and Aruto’s was soon to follow… let’s just hope they’re not blood-related.
Shirakawa Kotori (Da Capo Second Season) – Your favourite loser in love – until Shirakawa Nanaka in D.C. II Second Season. Ah, the curse of the Shirakawas lives!
March 6th, 2008 - 14:55
Hey, Stripey, could you spoiler tag them by series name please? Would like to discuss it more but I’m following a lot of shows like KimiNozo and would like to stay relatively clean. ^^ (I’m VERY worried seeing Akane on the list though if that implies what I think it does…)
One note from what I saw though – I’m still hanging on to every inch of hope for Yuumi in KimiKiss and Noe in true tears, I think the rumors of their (romantic) deaths have been greatly exaggerated… (Although I’d put more money on the latter.)
Another class list from you, it seems to be though.
March 6th, 2008 - 20:28
aww… No Asuka? I still feel bitter over her ‘loss in love’. I’m still torn in between Mao and Yuumi for Kouichi, though Mao’s actions as of the last episode seem to be indicative of a Yuumi x Kouichi ending, though the final outcome will still depend on Kouichi’s decision.
On the other hand, I’m looking forward to seeing Hiromi in the list next time, hehehe
March 6th, 2008 - 20:39
I sort of feel more for Tomoyo than Kyou when it comes to Clannad, maybe it’s because I’ve played Tomoyo After. It’s tragic either way for her so… T_T
Lol Crusader, chill out man. He’s hardly spreading bad propaganda about either of your two worthy ones. As it is currently in true tears, Nobuse is currently losing in love in the sense that Aiko chose Shinichiro over him, though that should change soon. As for Noe, well all I’m going to say is that as Shinichiro’s place to fly may not be from her side, perhaps her place to stay may not be by his. There are better things in store for the both of them, even if it’s not necessarily about them being together (though I doubt you care much for Shin-chan). I trust the writers to do as much given the good job thus far.
March 6th, 2008 - 23:50
Thanks Stripey. ^^
Anyway, I’m surprised for sola you didn’t nominate Mana instead, although I do agree with Aono. She was one of my favorites from that show and it was saddening that she really didn’t get a word in on Yorito; I was hoping for a confession or something along the line or at least her remembering about him, anything, but it seems that the ending went a different way with her more ‘assuming’ the role of Yorito. It works, but still, I like more explicitly stated stuff. XD
Also, for Tokimeki Memorial, Mina’s friend (Mo-chan, can’t remember if she had a full name) is right up there with her; she was the pink-haired one who got shot down by Inukai the delinquent time and time and time … and time … again, even at the end of the show. Too bad there was no tying up loose ends in a neat fashion for them…
And for two of my own, pretty much everyone not Haruhi Suzumiya in the self-titled show, and … would Asami of Myself; Yourself register on the radar at all? Her situation is definitely…unique…
And like Koneko-chan said, “Siscon triumphs lolicon. Stripey-approved.” is a legendary line. XD
March 7th, 2008 - 00:12
Crusader: LOL @ MiyaMiya comparison. I’m probably just sore that the onii-crooning bishoujo didn’t get her man. I frown on teen pre-martial sex btw, even in anime. At least that’s what I need to be telling my daughter in future. XD As for Noe, I have great love for her! If not I wouldn’t have ate Raigomaru out of jealousy…. and that Jibeta… how dare he steal hugs from our moe-goddess, he deserves to be pan-fried with shallots. Still loving a character and supporting the best couple are separate issues. Noe FTW! Shin X Hiromi FTW!!
dsong: You’re probably right about Kei. He’d pick Ichigo over Herikawa. I would too XD As for Shiho, she has virtually no chance. That confrontations with Akari is as good as a declaration to withdraw her candidature. And thanks for the reminder! Shirakawa Nanaka needs to be in there, within the top 5 too! XD
CCY: You’re most welcome. Hope I didn’t already spoil anything for you XD I don’t think Mo-chan’s lost. Extrapolating from the end, I believe they’ll eventually get together though it needs a little more momentum. And yes, Asami NEEDS to be on this list too!
usagijen: Ack! Need. to. watch. ep. 21. NOW! I’m still rooting for Asuka although I have less sympathy for her as I don’t find Kazuki much of a loss
Still she’s a great gal though and deserves better… like Kouichi! I need to read the manga XD
Cipher: heh no worries about Crusader. That’s how he shows tanuki love much like how Louise loves Saito XD And we both know how much I love Louise, ne? Cru-kun? XD
March 7th, 2008 - 03:33
CCY: Ah, the infamous Myself; Yourself… No winners in this one, only losers. The casualty list:
Sana – doomed to suffer in an abusive relationship. History repeats itself?
Nanaka – DO. NOT. CONFUSE. with the glorious Nanaka – the Shirakawa version. This person will self-destruct in 10 years. 9… 8…
Aoi – Seeing her cousin throw himself away was enough to make her turn lesbian.
Asami – Unfortunately victim of the writers who tore her down in a futile effort to make Nanaka look better. Overcame the writing cramp to redeem herself, only to be written off again and paired with Aoi.
Shuri – became one with her beloved oni-chan but was massively cheated in the process. No kiss scene, pregnancy, suicide, butcher knife, or saw.
Shuu – fell short of NICE BOAT but managed NICE TRAIN. Very lucky he had an addle-brained friend who didn’t bother to report him to the police.
Hinako – ended up dating a “plot device”. Nice going, writers.

Happy sis-con day to stripey

March 7th, 2008 - 16:11
While you’re at it… here’s my additions.
Suzuka – Sakurai Honoka. Had such a great development only to be ditched for the selfish Ice Queen. Colossal mistake.
Midori no Hibi – Takako Ayase. Nothing against Midori, but Ayase was simply superior in pretty much every aspect, AND she tried harder. Alas…
Magikano – Kurosu Yuri. Nuff said
… tsundere witches surfing on huge swords win. Just not in this anime…
March 8th, 2008 - 16:59
Ah, still have fond memories for Magikano – one of the few shows where the lead girl repeatedly manges to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!
Ayumi may have technically “won” but it was hilarious to see her fail time and time again. Between a clueless Haruo and her nemesis Maika, you just knew that every one of her plans would fail miserably. Yuri only served to lengthen her odds and she was no match for Michiru, either.
Once Ayumi wakes up and tries to get Haruo the “right” way, she might have a bit more success.
March 10th, 2008 - 00:26
dsong: Haha! Nice thoughts on M;Y and Magikano. I hurt for Hinako. She’s a great but squandered character. Magikano was outrageously funny since it didn’t take itself seriously. Ayumi’s performance was top-notch XD
abao: Heh, thanks for the reminder. Totally forgot as I was watching out for the Malaysian elections
Mentar: Ack, I kept forgetting to put Tadase on that list. I suspect it’s because Midori no hibi is on my dropped list. XD I neeed to catch Suzuka sometime
March 10th, 2008 - 15:24
Interesting… I view Aoyama Motoko as the “loser” in Love Hina. Even Naru laments she probably should have “won Keitaro”. Keitaro never really saw her as other than a “little sis” with a crush on him. And even Mutsumi viewed herself as mostly a foil to keep Naru+Keitaro moving. Obviously, interpretations may vary.
The others…. Shuffle!, Canvas 2, etc. Laments and wishes for alternative endings for all of them.
March 10th, 2008 - 17:30
Oh, you haven’t watched it yet?
Suzuka is in the upper league of mostly-serious romance shows. It has its weaknesses, but many strengths which offset the problems more than enough. Primary strength: Very detailed and credible characters, with distinct personalities.
If you’d ask me which show has my favorite “Menty-roots-for-her-even-though-he-always-knew-it-was-hopeless” loser, I would nominate Honoka. Even though I usually dislike the kind-and-gentle prototype, I’d marry Honoka off the spot, the underdog girl which developed oh so well over time. For a while I was even seriously hoping that she would make an upset in the manga (which continues quite a bit AFTER the anime), since she only continued to climb in my appreciation. Aside from her, Miki was also a treat. Basically, everyone but Suzuka
It will take a while to marathon though – 26 eps.
March 10th, 2008 - 22:36
What are you, some kind of frog lover? =D Suzuka is awesome!
I second that Suzuka is a pretty good show, in spite of the appalling production values. The manga is pretty good as well and has a looooot more after the end of the anime. I won’t say more because I don’t want to spoil like Mentar!
March 11th, 2008 - 05:55
vexx: Motoko would have been a worthy rival given more airtime. Much like Shinobu in a few years time
Mentar/Kabitzin: I actually caught 1 ep of Suzuka but couldn’t quite take ice-queen Suzuka’s blizzaga aura with dead boyfriend/senpai emo. As yes the animation didn’t help either
But this has been on my to-watch list like almost forever since the self-professed no-heart Zyl recommends it too. Now that it’s back by two heavy-weights in the aniblogsphere, I need to get my paws on it soonest. Will look out for the manga too. Zyl gushes about the magnificent rendering of the female body in that publication. XD
March 11th, 2008 - 12:17
Hmmm, reading my post I realize I had too many pronouns. Rewrite:
Interesting
March 11th, 2008 - 13:07
Just want to add Hatsuki from “Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito” Out of all the characters in the series she got jiff the most.
March 11th, 2008 - 15:35
Stripey: Definitely give Suzuka a whirl, then. Yes, Suzuka is a TSUNTSUNTSUNdere, but she’s got her moments too, and several other characters are simply awesome.
You should also try the manga, there’s been a batch torrent of all scanlated Suzuka chapters on TT a while ago. The artwork there is exceptional. Yes, it’s true that track and field folks tend to have attractive bodies, the mangaka Seo Kouji is just brilliant. Several chapters – fully dressed – are sex for the eyes. If this guy ever decides to draw H… then again, one could argue that he does, constantly ^_^
Anyway, what I’m meaning to say is that the discrepancy between the outstanding manga artwork compared to the sometimes-good-sometimes-bad anime is very big. Nevertheless, it’s a must-watch for romance fans. And if you can’t warm up to Suzuka, there are several characters I know you WILL adore. Namely Honoka (and her development throughout the show) and Miki (who in real life would spend 90% of her time fending off admirers).
March 12th, 2008 - 00:43
Mark this as another recommendation for the anime Suzuka. Some of the cruft around the edges is pretty lame/silly but the core story of Suzuka, Honoka, Miki, and company is quite a good watch.
Hmmm, I’ve got the scanlations in a dark folder somewhere — I should take a browse.
March 13th, 2008 - 09:27
vexx: Ahhh wolf/spice is another series I need to embark on… So much animu so little time!! XD
Xellos-_^: Ah noted! She’s the Chikane who never erm touched her Himeko
Mentar: I flipped through Suzuka manga today and man the artwork is gorgeous. I was told the anime art is gorge-eye
Now to hunt down the anime series.
