Shakugan no Shana Second 16
While this episode was indeed The Melancholy of Kazumi Yoshida, I'll less harsh on Yoshida than big meanie Aroduc. For Pheles' hougu, batteries are not included and x1 Yoshida POE charge is required to use. To insult to injury, Pheles said 'I Choose You' to Kazumi because she can use the hougu (doesn't freeze inside a fuzetsu) and because she is expendable and her death is perfectly acceptable. Ouch.
And it's not just going to be The Disappearance of Kazumi Yoshida. Yoshida's nose is repeatedly rubbed into her possible Horrible Fate. With her Power of Existence expended, she won't just die but no one will remember her, just as how no one remembers Konoe thus her desperate questioning of Oga-chan at the druid park of Konoe Animal Friendship skill display.
But it's not just exploitation but also manipulation. The hougu is a poisoned chalice. It allows Kazumi to stay 'relevant' to Yuuji's world and it makes her 'useful' - that if it has to be used, it will be used to save Yuuji (and Johan). Surely Kazumi would be willing to sacrifice herself for Yuuji but the cruelty of it is that she leaves Yuuji to Shana. Ah sweet Pheles, what a plot complication you have introduced. I agree completely with Omni: 'This could get very interesting…' Also agree that the animation quality was all over the place. Some of the non-close-ups for the faces were quite terrible. A budget crunch after the new OP and ED?
Contra Aroduc and Kurogane, I'm actually looking forward to the full length release of BLAZE; it has a dreamy and 'you want more mysterious?' feel of impending doom to it; it just kinda grew on me while attempting to screencap some OP stuff. Sociometry is ok too.
Speaking of which, I loved Bel Peol's spinning attack but the in-betweening left much to be desired.
Lots of plotting and scheming type conversation - I just the con-spy-rah-see will be grand enough. LOL at how Hecate replied to Bel Peol's chain letter.
Ah yes, sweet Wirhelmina, mooning for Pheles perhaps? :3
And hoping a successful campaign for the Wirhelmina x Pheles yuri love love OVA!
Still got that Meido and Shizuka Itou power de arimasu. Go go Wilhelmina de arimasu!

Bad-ass animation for the new intro! Yuuji tearing it up with the Blutsauger is definitely one of the big highlights. ‘Blaze’ isn’t as good a song as ‘Joint’ was, but it might grow on me.
I miss Pheles already. She isn’t in the new OP but I hope she comes back. Sabrac, however, seems to take her place. From the spoilers I’ve read about his combat abilities, that fight should be a good one.

Xellos-_^, I don’t think Yoshida’s POE is that well endowed to have enough to survive the use of the beacon hougu…
Zzz… yeah whatever happened to Ike? He’s been reduced to a running joke since the amusement park episode. From the first OP, I thought he’d be confessing to Yoshida and giving her the Big Shock.

Now that I think about it, the formulation was “kill your darlings” – authors should not be so fond of their own idioms, characters, etc. that they can’t purge them out of the script if and when needed.
Personally, I’m curious to see if the makers actually have the “balls of steel”[/Duke Nukem] to start killing off longtime characters for fun, drama & profit. >;D

Watchman, I certainly hope that we’ll see some carnage for ‘fun, drama and profit’ FTW! But the studio might have its hands tied if the light novels don’t have much chara death.

Granted I’m not exactly holding my breath in that respect though. The series hasn’t thus far exactly come across as the Japanese lite-novel equivalent of the A Song of Ice and Fire series (where Script Immunity does *not* exist)…
…but it’d be an interesting twist if it started heading in that direction, no ?

Wilhelmina’s typewriter is awesome, and I can totally see her typing up smarmy lovu novels while Tiamat offers stupid thesaurus substitutions. That could make for an AWESOME Shana-tan omake!
Also, at least Yuuji would remember Kazumi if she offed herself. I can see him telling Shana, “Remember when Kazumi summoned Pheles, and we still lost to Balle Masque?” Ah, the good ole days!

Earlier in the series, I was worried that they were preparing to off Wirhelmina. Now I’m not so worried anymore. Given how ridiculous Ike has become (in the first season he was a Reliable Friend and Voice of Reason for Yuuji), the possibility he might be killed off doesn’t really bother me that much, heartless viewer that I am. Since Kazumi is Shana’s only real competition for Yuuji, I’m guessing that it’ll be hard to kill her off too.
Kabitzin, LOL typewriter parody esp the thesaurus. Totally plausible after the Majorie Doki Doki Picture Diary in the latest Shana-tan too! Man, that was scary. Not surprisingly I wish for the novel that Wirhelmina is typing will be about the lovu lovu story between a pink-haired meido Flame Haze and a green-haired wind-using Tomogara.
