Lucky Star BGM and Radio Program 5

I haven't been particularly enthused about the preceding four compilation of Lucky Star BGMs (except for the marvellous Initial D parody tune 'Gravity', the *shock horror page expired* of 'Gyaaaaaaaaa' and the 'Kore de Enya' tune of Tsukasa's sea shell misadventure in the third release) but this fifth release really put a smile on my face. Even the track titles were LOL.

The opening track of 'Bun Guster' (LOLOLOL), with its trumpets and two different types of drumbeats, was suitably triumphal and was in the background of some of my favourite scenes in the anime, such as in Ep 5 when Konata finds the rare item, Laevantein, in her game world and as she goes loot hunting at the winter ComiKet.

The fourth track, 'Konata's Theme - India Version', has Aya Hirano going 'Ai~ya~~ Ai~ya~~' and reminds all the times when Konata crushes her dad during their verbal skirmishes. Short but oh so cute.

The flute and piano tunes of the fifth track, 'Mariya-sama May Be Watching', captures the feel of MariMite's Pastel Pure so well. They're clearly different tunes but the L*S interpretation successfully captures the feel such that I can imagine roses blooming and rosaries twirling in soft focus as this BGM plays. Gokigenyou!

And now we have an "official" name for that MMORPG that Konata and Kuroi-sensei play in the anime with the title of the sixth track, 'Filna Fatansy'. LOLOLOL. It's a lovely tune in of itself but the multiple interwoven layers of electronic music also conveys the made-for-endless-looping feel of game BGMs.

Tsukasa's ringtone is the eighth track, a MIDI-like rendition of Pachelbel's Kanon which featured in a certain cafe in a certain sad girl in snow series that makes me wanna shout 'LOAD SILVER CARTRIDGE!!' everytime the title is mentioned. But also, more importantly for me, this BGM track evokes the OSTs of Evangelion. Undoubtedly Shinji's last influence on me was to impart a love for cello music, particularly of Dvo?ák's Cello Concerto in B Minor and Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor (particularly the Barbirolli conducted performance by Jacqueline du Pré).

What spoilt the party a bit for me was how the Lucky Channel radio programs were tacked on to the back of each release. LC had its fun and funny moments (especially Gotouza-sama) and it raises interesting ontological questions (Is L*S a reality TV show or is it LC that's the reality TV take on L*S slice of life?) but I got tired of it quite quickly. I really hope that the BGMs will be re-released as a single collection. Now, *that* I'll buy faster than you can say: 'Fun fun guitar dayo.' :3

  1. Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” actually, due to a weird CD named “Pachelbel’s Greatest Hit”, reminds me of the tune as used in the Marvin Berry song “Earth Angel”. (Yes, the one from Back To The Future.)

Well, that, and the rant on the subject.

(I actually like “Canon in D”, prior to hearing it in any anime, but it’s certainly starting to get a bit overused.)

I’m actually using the “Hare Hare Yukai” Konata-ringtone version on the CD as my own ringtone. Which means that every time someone calls my cellphone, I hear a song from Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya as interpreted in Lucky Star by someone who likes Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and puts it on her cellphone in Lucky Star
