Bamboo Blade 1-2

Normally I steer clear of sports series (unless it's actually an excuse to show beautiful girls in bum-hugging shorts). And most of the time, I associate champions of justice with idiots. At best they do have some mad skillz but are lacking in the grey matter department, like Amelia and her dad from Slayers. At worst, they talk a lot of crap but don't actually have any ability to fulfill their dubious ideals, e.g. Raki from Claymore. As such, Bamboo Blade as Sports Show x Justice really did not appeal to me at all. But enticed by Kurogane's pithy comments about Tama-chan, I gave it a try and just melted. Tama-chan has taught cynical ole me how to love a champion of justice. ~~♥

Having seen the second episode too, courtesy of the lone rawman, I feel that I can safely enjoy this series as a story about how a girl's skill at kendo allows her to make close friends and happy memories.

Scattered random comments follow.

Is there a Japanese name for the 'knee-bend while taking-off/putting-on shoe' pose? Just as how 'absolute territory' neatly summarizes 'the area of exposed flesh between the skirt and kneesocks'.

Return it, knee socks!

The first episode also gave me a serious case of curry rice craving.

Tokyo Diner to the rescue!

It's a real pleasure to hear Megumi Toyoguchi as Kirino too - she's impressed me with her roles as Revy and Sei Satou but she also does goofy with :3 well enough, really enjoyed her madcap post-ED next ep preview.

A blushing Tama-chan is fine too.

Next episode seems Miya-Miya-centric. The ED hints that this sparkly girl has got a Dark side! I associate Houko Kuwashima with softly spoken roles like Kirika from Noir or Clare from Claymore so I'm looking forward to how she'll handle this role too!

  1. Wasn’t expecting it either, but this show has been included on my watch list after seeing the first ep. The idiocy of the club captain was getting on my nerves, but Tama and MiyaMiya more than make up for it.

  3. Oh yes… MiyaMiya is not what she seems. :) .

  5. I had wanted to email people about watching this since I could not find any entries that discussed Bamboo Blade in detail. ^^; One of the disadvantages in not having my own AnimeBlog. ^^; I held back on the emailing though, since I felt that it would be harassment. ^^;

    Quite frustrating, as I wanted people to watch this and blog about it so that I can discuss about it. ^^;

    My pitch to you in particular, was that Tamaki was as adorable as Nagato Yuki, in that she is silent and kicks lots of ass. Similar hairstyle too. ^^;

    I’ll admit that watching the first episode made me endear to Tamaki very quickly, as I am quite partial to female characters such as her. It prompted me to check out the manga, and like a man whose eyes have been opened by divine light, I have found THE character I will fawn over in Bamboo Blade.

    MiyaMiya.

    My mouth grinned SOOOO big when I realised what she was made of. :D

  6. Miya-Miya is teh win. Not that Tama-chan’s deadpan crackpotness was half bad either.

  7. OMG it’s the Yandere Brigade! LOL

    Owen S, I was converted mainly by the second episode though. Same part as Kurogane.

    Dav, hmmm… maybe I’ll have a reason to watch Clannad after all. Any yuri or oneesama in that series by any chance? :P

  8. Naw, no yuri unfortunately. Not even the subtle undertones of Mai x Sayuri goodness :/…unless KyoAni’s writers decide to continue with the joke about Kyou in Episode 2 LOL. Sadly, there isn’t any oneesama either. Some of the side characters do have close friends but probably not enough to cause a bleep on the radar. But do watch Clannad though if you have the time and slight interest. i’m clinging to it because of the pretty art and of course, humor. :)

  9. Dav: Not true! We’ll get our share of yuri undertones (rather, overtones). Did you forget Reimi? ^_^

    (Or maybe you didn’t read far enough yet)

    Hahaha. Anyone willing to venture a bet on the target of her affection?

  10. Oh YA!! OMG how could i have forgotten her!? Bad dav! BAD!! *Smacks herself*

  11. There is hope for yuri in Clannad after all!? I don’t see a Reimi listed on the ANN entry yet though.

  12. While rewatching Ep02, I caught something that I did not notice before. During the lunch scene, Yuuji blushed when he realised he shared an indirect kiss with Tamaki through his water bottle, but he kept quiet about it. ^^;

    Cheers.

  13. Yeah, but good thing that there hasn’t been any development along those lines. Got nothing against Yuuji but it would be a distraction from how the story is unfolding at the moment.
