Lucky Star 13

Konata's uguu~ caused a Hinano Taiyaki effect. Freshly baked taiyaki, even a mediocre and indifferently made one, was sooo much better than the frozen substitute!

Balsamic vinegar... Tsukasa's a marvel - her airheadedness is actually adorable rather than rage-inducing!

Marvellous background - will make a good poster for Kagamin fans.

You actually have a boyfriend!? What about me!?

Kagami: Isn't that me!?

Anderson voice: A~~~MEN!!!

Font of all wisdom, Miyukipedia. And Konata's jumping up and down with joy was so cute.

Kagami tsundere towards Konata turns us all on.

Mmm… Uguu….
You missed the best part of this, IMO – the Keroro parodies. Those were hilarious, especially the preview for next week’s ep.

I actually thought that the Keroro parodies were a tad heavy-handed with the change of style in drawing the faces of store staff and then the abandoning of any pretense in the preview… it was as if I was being grabbed and shaken by my shirt front and being screamed at ‘GEDDIT!? GEDDIT!?’ I love Keroro too but this was just too in-my-face for my taste…

>>> Freshly baked taiyaki, even a mediocre and indifferently made one, was sooo much better than the frozen substitute!
So true, but it taste even better if you get the good ingredients to make one. It is so hard to obtain quality ingredients in Atlanta, while it was rather abundant and cheap in Indiana.

My favorite part was when Konata lamented that no one had triggered the Kagami flag =D. The tsundere Kagami choco dream scene was amusing as well.
I wonder if Kuroi-sensei is single in the MMORPG as well X(.

How can you possibly say nothing about the epic Shirashi ED?! O_o;;
I mean…even if you didn’t like it, it was at least shocking.
And then there’s Yugioh coming out of mere talk of a card game.
——————————-
So~~~What propelled Kagami to make chocolate for Konata? Her official response was: “Tsukasa was making hers, so I joined in.”
Peer pressure or what?

And coincidentially she apparently only made enough for one bagful, which coincidentially got given to Konata (who coincidentially seemed quite touched, and probably not just ’cause she’s a greedy little sod), and not for example Miuyuki who AFAIK *is* the first friend Kagami made in the school…
I’ve a wee suspicion that if Kagami had a Child that got nuked Konata would be the person who turned into sparkles. Probably vice versa too. -_-
For some reason Kagami’s reaction to the idea Konata might have a boyfriend to give Valentine’s to reminds me of that scene in High School Girls where Ayano tells her family about her boyfriend; “But I thought you were with Yuma ?! Are you two-timing her already ?”
I’ll second that the ED was made of awesome and win. And the punchline (“COWARD”) was just killer. Ditto for the Minoru Shiraishi Valentine sideshow; the boy’s apparently queer as three San Fransisco city blocks put together… ^_^

Miyukipedia! Hah! (If that doesn’t catch on, there is no justice.)

Kabitzin, of course I’d venture that it’s Konata who’s triggered the Kagami flag as Kagami is tsundere towards her and tsunderes are only like that towards the person they like.
Kuroi-sensei, fighto! (~3~)_/
Claies, I felt the same way about Shiraishi singing as per my Ep 14 comment so was lazy to say something here too.
Well, Kagamin did make chocolate for Tsukasa, Miyuki and Konata – her posse if you will. But she only seems embarrassed about giving chocolate to Konata.
Watchman, awesome call on the HiME CHILD and High School Girls comparison. I agree completely.
rikchik, I feel pretty pleased with it meself, heh.

zyl: The fun wasn’t in the change of art style (hell, that store ALWAYS gets the weird art), so much as how self-referential it ends up being because they deliberately employed Kimihiro Watanabe and company to play their roles, both in the second half as well as in the preview, and wrote the characters in such a way that it would’ve fit into an episode of Keroro Gunso. The art is not in the reference, but in how close they can get to the style/feel of the original material.
Now, this Kagamin flag thing…. I’m still trying to figure out if it’s a generic scenario they’re using, or if there’s a specific game or anime that this is referencing. This thing’s almost as heavy as Hayate when it comes to parodies and self-references, but lacks the latter’s heavy-handedness. If you thought the Keroro references in this were bad, you should’ve seen some of the stuff in the first few eps of Hayate.

This just came to me…what if Kagami is embarrassed about giving chocolates to Konata because knowing Konata as an otaku, she feared the latter would blurt out some sort of yuri-ish comment that would socially embarrass her? Recall how easily Kona blurted out her e-mail address.
If that’s the case, it fits Kagami as a somewhat egotistic person.

Haesslich,
It’s not just the art but it was the most blatant part. I enjoy L*S mostly for the humour that is organic to the character traits and interactions. I do like it when the shop scenes deal with Konata’s Legendary Girl A status but it goes on a bit too much for my liking… guess I’m a manga purist – the preview was pretty cool though.
re: Kagamin. Sounds generic or a mish-mash like that MMORPG that Konata plays. I can’t really make a comparison with Hayate no Gotoku wrt to adaptation because I haven’t seen the manga but I got the feeling that the show has a PPD! in-your-face use of references/homages which I did feel worked fairly well given its context, setup, characters etc.
Claies,
Good spot on Kagami thinking in a self-centred way. She does admit that she was reluctant to say that she prayed to be in the same class as Konata as Konata would only find a way to make fun of her as a result. But she still wants to be in the same class and be good friends with Konata in the end!

zyl: Let’s just say that if you find this too blatant… the anime adaptation of Hayate’s worse. The manga’s pretty referential as it is, but the anime rips out a lot of the old stuff to throw in current shows or recent shows (as witnessed by a blatant Black Lagoon and One Piece reference) in episode 2 or so. And it’s probably a bit WORSE than PPD in some respects – some of the references dont’ feel natural, especially when they shift completely out of character to do so.
The shop scenes do feel rather weird, but this one was better than the last time, where they saw her just walk out after not finding what she was going for.

Guess that’s why I’ve put Hayate no Gotoku on hiatus.
July 14th, 2007 - 19:17
I didn’t even start watching it. Although that’s mostly because I found the character designs off-putting (I’ve found them to be a fairly reliable indicator in that regard).
Anyway, methinks Kagami has a bit of an issue with admitting she, too, has a wistful, romantic etc. side. (Especially to Konata, who’s all too willing to make fun of it especially given Kagami’s usual haughty dismissal of such “silly stuff”.) Or that Konata’s pretty much her best and most important friend. I’d say all that ties to her minor obsession with maintaining a (self-) image of level-headed no-nonsense rationality and reliability, which “role” she’s probably been playing so long (quite possibly at times in direct denial of what she’d *really* want to do or be) that she has no real idea of how to behave otherwise. She also seems to have a general problem with admitting any kind of “weakness” (which she seems to define rather widely), which hints of possible insecurity issues. Could well be that a central reason to why she sticks to her guns so stubbornly in regards to that front (and in spite of full well knowing her close associates full well know it’s bit of a Potemkin village) is that it’s the only yardstick she has to define herself by – and unconsciously fears that should she let it slip completely there wouldn’t be much left underneath. A troubling enough idea for anyone, nevermind now a teenager (as some degree of identity crisis and angst is pretty much part of the textbook definition of that age).
@Zyl: Alas, I can’t claim credit for the CHILD reference thingy. It’s one from under Everything Else I Need To Know I Picked Up From Okazu… ^_^;
Oh, and “Rice cake goes whee!” has to be one of the Defining Tsukasa Moments. It crystallizes something very essential about her, methinks. :3
(It also reminds me of Fuuka’s random magnificiently bad puns in Yotsuba&!; as one scanlator put it, “she’s just awesome like that.”)
Side note: I actually managed to miss a good portion of the in-your-face Keroro reference arc. Shameful. I must clearly train more.
