So you think you know anime BGMs? (Part 2)
I may have unintentionally made Part 1 a little too hard. I was rather surprised that almost no one recognised the Ai yori aoshi and the Da Capo tracks. DC's 2nd OST is easily my favourite anime music album of its genre while AYA ~enishi is easy listening and on my top 10 anime OSTs list. I strongly commend their albums to anyone who prefer soothing music with a melancholic tinge. Plenty more great tracks from where those came from.
Onward to the purpose of this entry, battle music. I'm hardly the right person to be pimping battle music since I'm not big on the action genre in anime. Nevertheless, I do have 10 favourites to offer. Given that there's 4 Kajiura pieces out of the 10, I'd expect this lil quiz to be a walk in the park for Kajiura fans
Of course, the quiz is secondary. The aim is really to infect more folks with the love for anime music. Enjoy!
Quiz: Can you match the background music (bgm) to their respective series?
(Edit: 11 Mar 2009 - BGMs removed)
PS: The loading may be a little quirky. Do give it some time. If any problem persists, pls do drop me a note. Thanks!

Ewww, Kajiura. Way inferior to Yoko Kanno for many reasons, one of them being how Kajiura’s stuff always sound the same (the songs you posted prove my point). I don’t know why the fans even bother, but then again your selection of BGM really sucks. No Kiddy Grade, Last Exile, GITS:SAC, Wolf’s Rain, Haibane Renmei, Saikano, Scryed…? If you’re going to go old-school you might as well post the more noteworthy ones. Only Shana and Rozen Maiden have any real merit in your samples so far…
March 20th, 2007 - 01:49
Wow, thanks to all for your attempts. It’s as if part 2 was made almost too easy with the entire list unraveled in just 8 comments.
Anonymous: The point of the post is to advance appreciation in anime music. Don’t just say my list suck, name the tracks you enjoy so that they may gain greater awareness. Anyhow I hope this doesn’t trigger off the 3490343th Kajiura-Kanno War. XD

I won’t bother to post my guesses when everyone else has got them, but good game anyway- it’s pointed out my favourites, reminded me of some OSTs I need to listen to more and offered some suggestions as to what to get next. How many other posts can do that all in one go?
March 20th, 2007 - 06:07
Me too. I’ll probably get them wrong anyways.
Stripey, I have a question. What’s the site you used to stream the music like this? Or is it a feature of your blog software?

Skane: Woot for “Kasukanari Aogi na Sai” of Erementar Gerad! Although I know it as “Colours of a faint stir”. Will check out the rest of your recommendations. Thanks! I have a feeling I know the pumpkin scissor one
kaz3phyrous: Ah you have SnS OST!
I love the track when Sara launched at the end of ep 3…
shuffe: Glad you enjoyed it! May have part 3 if I have more fav tracks to share
Karura: Thanks! And I have commenters to thanks for highlighting those that I missed too.
ShadowrazoR: Oh I just extract the parts I want to sample via wavepad and then convert the mp3 to swf (ie flash). Those buttons are swfs really
deltazechs: You are one of the few that got no. 5 right
You nailed no. 9 too.
Hinano: Heh, I have to agree that my preference for BGMs is intimately tied to my enjoyment of the series.
The tendency to note/remember a track is so much higher for well produced series. A pity indeed for GONZO series which typically have strong music productions but they dont stay with me since I enjoy so few of their animes.
crimson: Would you be attempting to play any of these on your guitar chans?
March 20th, 2007 - 11:20
I would attempt some of them with my guitar-chans when I have “the ears” (to transcribe them properly)
It would be great if u can find some of the tabs from jap sites though

5. Same as 2
6. Mai-Otome – MATERIALIZE
7. Mai-HiME staple song – Tokiiro no Mai
8.
9. Read or Die OVA
10. Same as 2, especially since it sounds like Kajiura.
March 20th, 2007 - 21:47
crimson: Here’s a couple of sites for anime scores
http://ichigos.com/
http://www.alphatrance.com/0engine/music/anime/
Although the latter is more for the piano. Enjoy!
Crusader: Hope you back in time for the Spring season or at least for Feito chan! XD
Chewy: Yeah, I need to pimp more tracks from Rozen Maiden Traumend’s OST. So many good tracks. I particularly like Shukumei (Track 3)
TheBigN: heh, you got the series right for 7. but it’s actually Mezame
After ensei and mezame, my next favourite track would be yami no prologue.
March 20th, 2007 - 22:47
Third cheer for Kasukanari Aogi no Sai! I still love the cello(or whatever that low strings portion was: I suck at recognizing instruments) solo even though Episode 2 aired 2 years ago…
And Rozen Maiden/Traumend’s too! I’d pick Battle of Rose/Bara Otome from each OST as my favourites.
Lol Kajiura’s pretty over represented in this though IMO(even though all are her signature tracks)
I’d like to draw attention to two other composers though: Sahashi Toshihiko(GS/D, FMP all series) and Iwasaki Taku(GetBackers, Black Cat).
Sahashi’s battle music gives an epic feel with heavy strings and brass, but people may deem it a little bombastic though
, while Iwasaki’s gives the feeling of speed with his synthesizers combined with fast string playing.
Haven’t heard much of Kanno’s music though, though I LOVE her work in Turn A Gundam(Moon ftw!!one). Sorry I haven’t watched Bebop…
March 20th, 2007 - 23:44
This has been a lot of fun, especially since you’re highlighting BGM instead of opening and ending themes. I agree that appropriate background music can really clinch a scene’s emotional impact, yet background music is so easy to overlook in the face of the opening and ending themes that get repeated (and burned into memory) with every episode. Two soundtracks you should check out (if you haven’t already) are KamiChu! and Koi Kaze; just listening to these conjures beautify scenes from each anim
March 21st, 2007 - 02:54
1.
2. Shakugan no Shana – ??
3. Noir – Canta per me
4. Jubei-Chan 2 – Main theme
5. Souko no Starin – ??
6. Mai Otome – Materialize
7. Mai Hime – ???
8. Naruto – ??
9. Read or Die – ??
10.
Just a few that I know. The rest just sound familiar but I can say from where.
March 21st, 2007 - 08:58
Hey, something that I actually recognise here.
#3 is Cantabile from Noir, the music for bad guys to fall dead to.
#4 and #5 sound oddly familiar, but I’m afraid I can’t figure it out (maybe coz I haven’t seen the show)
#6 is Materialise from Mai Otome (I think that’s the name of the song)
#7’s from Mai Hime – beautiful and evocative as always
#8 is from Naruto, the one they always play when Naruto or some other Konoha ninja comes from behind to beat the bad guy, and nonchalantly explains their piece de resistance while the beaten previous-upper-hander gasps and pants in disbelief before collapsing in defeat
#10 reeks of Kajiura… her trademark vocal dramatics are all it over and since you said there’re 4 of them, this ONE has to be it.
March 21st, 2007 - 13:11
#1. ???? I’m guessing Rozen Maiden…
#2. Shana
#3. Noir. Thought anime was a little boring. I could never finish it.
#4. I was thinking Hack/sign…but I accidently read someone’s comment and yeah, I think its Jubei Chan
#5. ????
#6. Mai Otome…I think.
#7. Definitely Mai HIme
#8. Naruto…??
#9. ROD OVA!!! OMG!!! This is one of my all time fav OST!!
#10. Tsubasa Chronicle. Though anime really wasn’t for me…I liked the music.
If you have time, check out Bartender OST. Very soothing. ^^b
March 22nd, 2007 - 15:56
“TheBigN: heh, you got the series right for 7. but it
March 23rd, 2007 - 06:58
thekrazycow: Thanks for highlighting the other composers! I vaguely remember Black Cat to have good score… pity I found the series severely lacking in the other department
Will check out the OST though
pugchan: Ah I must check out Koi Kaze’s tracks
Thanks for the heads-up. And yay for the anime ecumenical movement! Thanks for showing both camps that it IS possible to be Kajiura AND Kanno fan
Aoi Jun: Save for no. 5 you got them all right
no. 1’s from rozen maiden traumend and the last is Tsubasa Chronicle.
greyscalefuzz : Unbeknownst to yourself, you have been leveling up as an anime fan! The other track that bad guys fall dead to in Noir is Salvo nos. Great track, do check it out
muhootsaver: Great attempt!
Hmm bartender, maybe I’ll so steal a peek of its ep 1. Thanks for the recommendation.
TheBigN: Oh i think it’s called yamiyo no prologue. my bad!
Track 13 of Mai HiME OST 1
March 24th, 2007 - 23:18
Admittedly, I reconize only a few of them but the last one is definitely “A song of storm and fire” by Yuki Kajiura from Tsubasa Chronicles
March 26th, 2007 - 21:46
O.o
No.1 is from Rozen Maiden Traumend?? Rozen Maiden is one of my favorite series and I miss this one?? Damm…..
Soo … No. 5 is from …?
March 27th, 2007 - 08:57
shirokiryuu: Bingo!
I like strange names too from the Tsubasa Chronicles OST.
Aoi Jun: No. 5 is Last Battle from X TV
It sounds even grander if you listen to the complete track.
