So you think you know anime BGMs? (Part 1)
I have just finished Tsukuyomi ~ Moon Phase and while the series didn't quite jump onto my top 20 list, it was made memorable by a very VERY lolicious Hazuki and a very characterisitic soundtrack. Since any expression of love for Hazuki's moe-loliciousness may hurt my reputation as a defender of all things pure/honourable, I'm going to rave about the soundtrack instead. Actually, more like one of the tracks. I was in Kurogane-Land (KL) last week and the journey required two 6 hours bus rides of which I spent at least 10 hours looping "Midnight Games" from the Tsukuyomi OST. For some unfathomable reasons, I found this track incredibly soothing. It's probably fuelled by the triggered memories of the more tender moments between Koukei/Hazuki.
For this tanuki, anime background music (BGM) is what sets the divine apart from the mortal. Good animation and script make a great series. But to elevate a production to the heavenly realms, the visuals need to be coupled with music that penetrates the soul. All of my most memorable anime scenes have such appropriate musical accompaniment. As part of Hontouni's aims, to pimp anime goodness, here's a little quiz to enhance our appreciation of anime music.
Below is some of my favourite anime bgms for matching with their corresponding series. Knowing the name of the piece is not necessary though a bonus. Battle music has been excluded for the possibility of a part 2 to this entry. Hope you guys enjoy each piece as much as I do.
(Edit: 11 Mar 2009 - BGMs removed)
Edit 20/03: Here's the answers to the quiz.
If you had like any of these tracks, I would encourage you to check out the rest of the respectively OST album. There's a lot more anime music goodness from where all these came from
Enjoy!
PS: Anyone who knows the lyrics of "Midnight games" (Tsukuyomi ~Moon Phase) pls point me to them. Thanks!

Argh! A lot of them sound familiar, but I can’t quite put a title to any of them.

I like quizzes like these, I like anime background music, but this is hard!
Also have heard this before, for some reason it sounds like it’s from Eureka Seven, but I am probably wrong
1) Mai Otome – Hinageshi no Hana no you ni
4) Mai Hime – Ensei
6) I’ve heard this one before, I want to say it’s from Da Capo
7) Tsukuyomi – don’t know the name
10) X TV – Sadame

I thought No. 6 is from Shuffle!?
No. 3 sounds like it’s from Twelve Kingdoms, but I’m not sure…
March 19th, 2007 - 01:43
Haiz… I fail at this one. I am not very capable when it comes to committing BGMs to memory.
I will just answer 2 of them.
05) Figure 17
06) Shuffle!
I was going to answer 10) as well, but after reading Lana’s post, I realised I was wrong and decided to forfeit on it.
Cheers.

Agh – tough ones. And dramatic ones too – lotsa epic sweep in many of them.
I thought 3 was from 12 Kingdoms – Crazy, or merely wrong?
I particularly liked 9, though I don’t remember it from Mahoromatic (heck, it was four years ago)
March 19th, 2007 - 03:04
Wait, sorry! Is number 3 from Last Exile?

March 19th, 2007 - 06:50
well i guess it would help if we actually liked the same animes
The only one I knew was the Mahoromatic one
Psht why don’t you have Kanon BGMs?
March 19th, 2007 - 08:43
Yes… I have the OST for Tsukuyomi and about half the disk is eternally relistenable (it does have the usual amount of elevator music drivel, but all the vocal tunes and some of the instrumental pieces are sublime). Same goes for AIR’s OST … there’s about 10 tracks I could listen to repeatedly.
Another OST I love is the one for Petopeto-san. The vocal pieces are way cabaret cute and the instrumentals are quite diverse.
The PaniponiDash OST is full of musical parody win and the vocal pieces are very funny.
Not really BGM but:
The recent fansub of the audio drama prologue for ~sola~ has a tune on it that really floated my boat (that ethereal vampire-ish tragic quality). The ED for the recent I.M. was quite endearing.
I knew so few of those tunes I bailed on the test — mostly stuff to anime I don’t think I’ve seen or care much for.

nice collection!

Asrialys: heh, I think a sign that a bgm did what it is supposed to do is when we subconsciously remember it
Lana: Oops, didn’t quite intend it to be so hard
You have 1, 4, 7, 10 right
FortMan: Bingo for 6! No. 3 not from 12 Kingdoms though
Skane: 100% correct on your 2 attempts
ojisan: Hmm no. 3 is not from 12-K but if their soundtrack has similar standards, I should check them out.
It’s not LastExile either.
shuffe: Kajiura sensei FTW! Do check out Part 2 of this quiz. I would feature many of the Sensei’s works
aoki: Woot!
Hinano: LOL! I would to put up some AIR and Kanon bgms but there’s too many of them that I like that I decided to leave them out. Moreover, with Kanon just over, it wouldn’t be much of challenge… though I may unintentionally made this too hard XD
Vexx: ah.. I need to see I.M soon. I love AIR’s OST myself. One of my cds in the car plays only AIR bgms.
crimson: thanks
didn’t want to tax the server too much else would list another 10 XD battle music up next.

jus wondering but wats #8 from and wat ’s name of song? i really like it
March 19th, 2007 - 21:18
Wow, I failed the test pretty badly…think I only got three:
#7: Tsukuyomi
#8: Da Capo (possibly DCSS?)
#9: Mahoromatic–that one I got in the first two seconds, which made me feel a little better
March 19th, 2007 - 23:21
TheBigN: Those you attempted you got right
Some of these tracks are from series a few years old so may elude some viewers
Shiro: Great attempt! 6/10
No. 6 is actually Primula’s theme which grabbed my attention when she appeared. They used it for the more poignant bits in the series too
Flaskis: No. 3 is Rozen maiden Traumend
I think it’s time I post the answer heh.
Zan: It’s from Da Capo.
The 2nd OST from DC has a lot of such great tracks. Glad you like it.
suguru: Yay! sasuga suguru-san, bingo on No. 8!
It’s from DC actually. They played it in ep 21 when nekomimi meido san.. err departed
March 20th, 2007 - 01:03
Ah, I should have remembered #8 was DC not DCSS, I re-watched DC less than a month ago. That whole scene with Yoriko and Junichi on the school roof before she *spoiler censored*…damn, that makes me cry every time I watch it.
