I've never really understood "ZAFT no tameni." It's a bit like saying For the Sake of NATO! Other than it sounding completely dumb, I'm not sure if a treaty organization is a good focus for fanatical fighting devotion.

Well, it’s a ‘treaty’ organization in the same way NATO is – a mutual-defense pact devoted to protecting itself from an invading force in the form of the Earth. Basically, it’s a matter of ‘us the superior space people versus the inferior but horribly paranoid Earth folk’ sorta thing.
Now you need more Chokotto Sister-derived Choko to counter Stripey’s siscon, since she’s not only innocent but completely unaware that such things exist… and Haruma’s too good a guy to go siscon on us.
And thank God for that.

Hah! Remember the Orcs in warcraft shouting “FOR THE HORDE!!”? The horde is an alliance as well, comprising the different clans like Warsong etc. Does that make sense?

I haven’t seen much gundam so I’ll take Haesslich’s word for it that Zaft is a NATO like organization. But it does seem kind of odd yelling something like “For NATO!” Normally you would use the name of your actual country and/or immediate socio-political affiliation, or an abstract idea.
“For America,” “For France,” “For ‘insert country here,’” “For freedom,” or “For great justice,” seem to flow better than something like, “For the sake of NATO
“For the Horde” does flow nicely however. It’s probably just really an artifact of the impossibility of perfect transliteration mixed with where and how you learned your English that we are using to discuss this. So, some things will sound fine to one person but odd to the next while still being grammatically correct.
