Live Alive (Ep XII)

Penultimate stop on the Praise Yuki tour, covering screencaps that in my previous post on this episode. Her prognostications were hilarous though if you were the customer it would be terrifying - Kyon's reaction says it all. And her virtuosity with the electric guitar was stunning.

Foreshadowing of the concert.

In the novel, Kyon compares Yuki's playing with Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler and Queen's Brian May though my own preference is GNR's Slash due to big hat and obscured eyes. No guitar smashing though.

It was also great seeing Yuki jam with her body bobbing to the music, a motion amplified by her witch's hat (needs a big eye too). It just reminded me of how supposedly emotionless characters can express their emotions through the medium of [playing] music - something that Rod M and John Biles' Evangelion/HP Lovecraft fanfic series, Children of an Elder God, hauntingly portrayed through their characterization of Rei Ayanami.

KyoAni also made a major change to the story, reducing the number of songs performed downwards from five (?) to two which is more realistic given the sole hour of rehearsal before the actual performance as well as saving costs by only showing two songs (both truncated as well). The audience reaction was adjusted accordingly as they were completely stunned and unable to react for the whole of the first song and only started to warm up towards the end. Also the overwhelming demand for the original band's recordings was better explained in the novel due to Haruhi's "My Way" still of singing, Yuki's sheer technical mastery and the other two members struggling to create the necessary harmony with the two new stand-in members.

My favourite anime concert thusfar.

Fanart via danbooru:
Great top-down perspective
Full dress rehearsal
Dreamy watercolour
Strangely embarrassed
Streaks
Chibi-mode

I'm sure there's a Jimi Hendrix one floating around with Yuki playing the guitar with her teeth. Can't seem to find it at the moment. Though, of course, Hendrix's guitar was strung in reverse for left-handed play.

  1. Are you referring to this one?

    Yuki & Guitar

    Cheers.

  2. Indeed I was. Thanks, Skane.

  3. Yuki puts on her robe and wizard hat…

  4. The fortune telling part was soooooo funny.
It also happens to show that Yuki is still ‘linear’ in some aspect (if you compare to what fortune tellers will tell u or how they choose to disclose informations).

  5. You have to remember the joke THERE was that fortune tellers are supposed to give you generalized, unspecific predictions for the future so they can a) cover themselves and interpret any later happening as being part of the fortune, and b) the fortunes are usually supposed to be reassuring. Having someone tell you, minute by minute, what’ll happen next down to the very last detail – and then predicting specific types of minor doom in the process – is NOT reassuring, or much like a fortune teller.

  6. Hahahhaa, EXACTLY haess!!!

Yuki was like printf-ing every little details for her male customer (which is to his dismay). Frankly, I would like to meet this type of fortune teller if they even exist in today’s era where avenues of distractions are plentiful.

I’ve had a fair share of experience with electric guitar witch hat (in ggxx#r). But it was awesome to see a more passive version of that (ala Yuki~~).

  7. Isn’t Yuki’s Guitar the one from Wanes World?
Yuk Hendrix wins so damn hard….

  8. Speak my name and I appear!

Evangelion itself used music as a way to enable the speechless to speak; the children were all musicians in the original. And music was very important for several Lovecraft stories too.

And I really loved this episode of Haruhi.

  9. You aren’t the only one that loved that ep John Biles.

It was my favourite followed up by the Island one where Yuki made Haruhi almost lose it.

    I love those two girls.

It it weren’t for Diva, Yuki would be my most fav character in anime.

  10. @Eleutheria

ZOMG legend of blood ninja! LOL

    @Popogeejo

All the guitars are based on real guitars (see jason miao’s entry for a comparison shot). Haruhi is using the Italia Mondial Classic, Yuki is playing the Gibson SG Special and Mai is strumming a Fender Precision Bass.

    @John Biles

So when will you and Mr Malatipan be serenading us with more Call of CoaEG some time in the near future? Please don’t say when the stars are right! ;)

  11. wow, the legend of the blood ninja made me laughed so hard.
