Agree completely with the verdict at Whai Whai: ‘Kickass.’ Satelight’s remake continues to please - it’s faithful to the manga without being tedious and is soothing away the horror that was GONZO’s TV series.
With information from Iscariot 13, Integra sends Alucard, Seras and Pip to South America to search for and destroy the Millennium group. It’s a trap but Alucard slaughters the policia, defeats and absorbs card-wielding Millennium vampire Tubalcain Alhambra.

Took me a few seconds to realize that the email (informing me about the release and asking this blog to spread the word) was from Geneon’s advertising company rather than their legal team. Phew. So this is a bit of an advertisement post though I’m not getting anything in return for it. Only because it was nice that they asked so nicely and that I’m favourably disposed towards buying this series in the first place (thinpak boxset please!). Also kudoes for Geneon getting Hellsing Ultimate released relatively quickly and with some goodies with the limited edition release. One thing I don’t quite understand is why “Alucard” has been changed to “Arucard” in the Geneon version streaming video on the Hellsing Ultimate website. Doesn’t this deviate from a plot point made in manga Vol.7?
I came pretty close to dropping OtoBoku as the first half of the first episode was so excruciatingly clichéd. My suspension of disbelief was stretched pretty thin too with how Mizuho was regarded as one of the school’s beauties. I love Mariya but there’s no way her makeup kit can be that powderful [sic - you'll get this pun only if you're fluent in Singlish]. It’s not a far stretch of the imagination for a pretty girl to look like a pretty boy (think Ouran’s Haruhi) but it takes a very very pretty boy to make a decently pretty girl, much less the school idol. While I do think of the catgirls, I just couldn’t let it slide. Until the super deformed (SD) mode kicked in. With the show not taking itself seriously at all, it was hard for me to continue being pedantic.
OtoBoku is probably the most recent example where SD is an important and successful part of the animation. In other cases, Continue reading ‘Super Deformed to the rescue!’
Like Kurogane, I enjoyed this immensely. His entry also notes the main things that were added, relative to the digest. What I liked most was Seras’ struggle to come to terms with her vampiric nature and the depiction of the relationships between Integra and Alucard as well as Alucard and Seras.
As I saw the earlier Gonzo production of this series as well as having read the seven volumes of the manga, the pacing and amount of information was in this episode was just nice for me. However, for those without manga knowledge, it might seem a little bit abrupt especially the initial part about Integra vs her uncle. And I actually burst out laughing during the scene with the above screencap because of this piece of Mai Otome fanart by Urayo (whose work was introduced to me by Chalcahuite - thanks!). Looks very promising. Especially liked the scenes with Alucard changing his gun’s magazine. May be shaping up to be a huge improvement over GONZO’s previous version - while I’m more forgiving of how GONZO "innovated" on the story (the manga’s plot didn’t really come together until Vol.7 for me), the TV series was not appealing to mine eye at all. Dark, much too dark, probably didn’t help that I saw on it on the crappy ODEX VCD version.
Seras Victoria is rendered the most differently. I found her hair and face a bit too pointy but I think I’ll get used to it. I also liked her SD mode which is really faithful to the manga (as well as the screenie of her above which is my favourite scene of her in the manga, art-wise). She’s my favourite character of the series - ample bosom aside, she plays the rookie role to Alucard’s God-mode and the most interesting part of the story for me is Seras coming to terms with her vampirism. Really looking forward the OVA’s release on 2006-02-10. See Kurogane for his 135 screencaps.
