Zaku see Zaku do (RSS full feed, tags, archive fix)

Readers who view this blog via RSS may noticed that, inspired by the Sea Slug! Team, full feed (with <!–more–> tag workaround) has been enabled and hotlinking protection disabled for Google Reader. In addition, the Simple Spoiler plugin and formatting has been updated.

Next up was trying out tags after reading Owen S’s exhortation. I’m still in the process of deciding how to use this new WP 2.3 feature. At present, I’ve pared down non-anime series categories (retaining blog admin, koma, loot, musings and what) and am using tags to relate posts containing elements that cut across series. So far the most used tags have been oneesama and yuri. ;)

Then I noticed a rather annoying problem: I could only get a maximum of seven posts when viewing by month, category or tag even if said month, category or tag had more than seven posts. Hadn’t noticed this before as I normally use the Manage Posts menu under Site Admin rather than the ELA Archive view but the problem became obvious as I started fooling around with tags.

After riding the merry-go-round of checking the Wordpress Codex and forum, the K2 wiki, my template navigation code, K2 archive settings, Extended Live Archive plugin settings, WP Options Reading settings and so on, I finally discovered that the cause was due to the K2 files being located one sub-directory further down the themes sub-directory (themes > K2_RC1 > k2) than it actually should have been (themes > k2) after switching between the default theme and K2. It’s so good to have “<< Older   Page 1 of x” back! And so that’s why the custom banner uploader didn’t work either! Doh. Funnily enough, everything else seemed to worked fine before today’s fix. And to think this not inconsiderable navigational problem has been sitting under my nose for almost three weeks! :(

[BTW since WP 2.3, I can't see Incoming Links either.]

WP 2.3 upgrade and Three Favourite Lucky Star scenes

Not being a tech person I tend to go yare yare, like Kagamin above, when WP announces yet another upgrade. But I was encouraged by how the Sea Slugs! WP 2.3 upgrade went relatively well; the final push came when I learnt from AnimeLife that the K2 RC1 didn’t break (no customizations except for the header CSS, link colour and list of allowable HTML in comments) and that ELA has been modified to cope with the new thingamajig. Have updated most of my plugins too (spoilers are now enclosed with
text
). Do let me know if anything is wonky.

In any case, while searching for a screencap to accompany this post, I thought a bit about my favourite Lucky Star scenes and they were, in ascending order, (3) when Kagami lures Konata to her house using Tsukasa’s cookies (wait, that didn’t sound right :P), (2) Kagami’s horror turning into being happy for Konata at the cosplay cafe and (1) when Kagami was Konata’s Prince at the Haruhi Gekisou. I’m detecting a pattern here… ;)

Darlin’ Darlin’ Froze

Apologies for the lack of update. Have been raging against deadlines in a last burst of fire, currently travelling without reliable access to the internet.

Amazingly, yesterday in Istanbul, I met a teenage Japanese girl yesterday who is a big anime fan. She was definitely envious of the ComiKet cosplayers whose lovely images I still have in my camera and even said that she wants to dress up, gothic lolita-style, but that her mom forbids her from going to Harajuku!

Housekeeping Notes

Upgrade to WP 2.1.3 completed, condition all green. Please let me know if you notice any problems. Had tweaked my link colours under the K2 style.css to better match the Lunamaria banner, had used a different colour naming convention (#NNNNNN) instead of the default (NNN) and didn’t realize that there was a problem with the vlink colours until Skane kindly pointed it out.

Hold-overs from the domain transfer have also finally been fixed. My Zaku favicon hadn’t been showing up and only just fixed the relevant link rel lines in the K2 header.php file which had been pointing to the old domain. Gravatars (which started accepting new signups again in Feb) were not being cached either due to an inappropriate permission setting for the cache sub-directory which has since been fixed. Had found the Comment Timeout plug-in useful in mass-closing the comments in the old blogs while both old and new domains were still up during the transition period. Still using it, currently set at close comments on posts older than 60 days or without a comment for 30 days whichever is later. The amount of spam has dropped considerably. Speaking of which, upgraded Spam Karma to 2.3. The average karma of my approved comments is a mind-blogging -20,000 (as opposed to an average karma of about -1,785 for spam caught)! But since spam is still being eaten with no false positives, I’m not tempted to dive into the SQL database to try and fix it.

Loads of other new plug-ins too. Had replaced <?php get_links_list(); ?> with <?php wp_list_bookmarks(’orderby=order&category_orderby=order’);?> in sidebar.php to implement My Link Order. Finally switched the URL for my Google Analytics account over to new domain, got Google Analyticator to add the GA javascript to every post/page in the blog, added Feedburner and implemented WordPress Reports.

hontou ni TRANSFERRED

Welcome to the new home of ‘hontou ni sou omou?’

The current domain name and hosting plan with Dreamhost expires in a month. Despite much inertia after four years with DH, I have finally knuckled down to transplant the hontou ni blogs to a new domain, after almost six months of proscratinating, under a new host which is 30% cheaper, has got a 99.9% uptime guarantee AND has only one “[hostname] sucks” as opposed to 17,400 hits for my soon to be ex provider.
