And now Kabitzin is running a dead pool for Macross Frontier. Characters returning from the dead is a venerable tradition and I thought I’d just highlight one example from the 1990 series, Record of Lodoss War. Spoilers (looong past the statute of limitations) after the jump:
I was sure Ashram was a goner because we saw him getting swallowed up by the collapsing ground. But, more definitively, the narrator said so and we got that big chara silhouette against the background scenery that was a staple of Ancient Animu.
Nonetheless his return was necessary for the proper resolution of the series and he was brought back in an entirely plausible way. At least no mask. LOL

I go through life blissfully ignorant of the blank patches in my memory until something triggers it and I go “oooooooooh yeah…” Lodoss gave me a big jolt, thanks. Do you know if it ever came out on DVD? I wouldn’t mind seeing it again.
