Ancient machines and anime

While I have procured DVD replacements for my Slayers and Evangelion VHS tapes, the same can’t be said of the hardware used to actually watch said animu. In contrast to moyism’s Samsung 50″ plasma 1080p TV/monitor or Stripey’s Sharp Aquos LC-42PX5M, I’m still using a CRT, an ancient bulky 21″ Panasonic TX21GF10M (yes, it has colour though it’s pre-Trinitron so the screen is convex towards the viewer). And I have not one but two VHS tape recorders (Sharp MA30 and JVC HR-J677MS). Ahaha~ ♥

    I just realised that despite the ton of Eva merchandise I own, I still don’t possess the DVDs of the original TV series. LOL

    Great to have you back!

    I blame my Sharp LCD for the start of my crazy anime DVD aquisition. :P And I’ve finally figured out how to get 4:3 aspect ratio for my TV/DVD player - use component or video cables instead of the HDMI one. Sadly there’s some quality loss so I’d rather stick with a sharper of slightly fatter Mai chan :P

    I had only a 13″ CRT TV with a built-in VCR for what seemed like forever, and that’s how I first saw Evangelion and who knows what else.

    Two years ago we got a 27″ LCD (kind of offbrand). I use a computer hooked up to it so I can watch both my DVDs and high-def fansubs (and Blassreiter on Bost, not great-looking), but soon it will be time to get a Blu-Ray drive for it I think. The moment you upgrade, it never ends, so watch out.

    otou-san has a good point…

    … any bets when I’ll hit past the 100″ mark? -_-;;

    And Zyl, you really need to upgrade! It’ll so be worth the money plus you’ll see a worlds of difference in quality. Come on, you know you wanna…

    What holds me back slightly (besides cost, considering that I don’t have a full-time job right now) is that Stripey’s huge TV can’t pay 4:3 anime in 4:3 so everyone looks a bit stretched if it’s not a recent series… which applies to the majority of the DVDs that we have.

    Are you sure you have messed around with all the settings you can? I’ve used several HD TVs and they always had options for 4:3 ratios. Or is this something that is being caused by the player itself? Getting something like a PS2 for the playback would allow the TV to properly recognize the signal (never was a problem for me using a PS2, at least).

    I have Eva laserdiscs. One of these days I’m going to get a laserdisc player.

    My LCD doesn’t have the ability to adjust aspect ratio when hooked up via HDMI, but my DVD player (Panasonic DVD-S97) does, so both 4:3 and 16:9 work fine.
