Mentar’s recommendation carries a lot of political capital with me too.
So, in addition to Mentar carefully anticipating and answering all my objections and worries (principally GONZO, then again Seto no Hanayome was enjoyable too - are they finally getting their act together?), there was also the invocation of the Shizuka Itou Doctrine for MOAR pink-haired kick arse goodness.
In contrast to the males, Amanda has been a constant pleasure to watch and hear over the first nine episodes that I’ve seen thus far. Particularly when she talks to Malek and Shizuka Itou says the Zaku trigger word, ‘Oneechan’, over and over again. Overall, there have been some surprises but the bigger, more interesting picture seems to be coming to the fore and I hope the series will go from strength to strength.
*grin*
One more Amalgam infected. Proceeding with the mission!
I just hope that O-L gets their stuff together to release 10-13 soonish, too. Watching everything on stream (Crunchyroll) is a lesser experience than a proper HD encode.
And I absolutely agree: Amanda alone would already be enough for me to finish the show. Well… *bites tongue to avoid a spoiling comment which REALLY wants to get out now*
Those who left this show too early should turn their backs once again, giving this show another chance and justice it deserves.
I’ve been interested in this show from the very start. Frankly speaking, it being branded a Gonzo show with optimal CG use tunred me off completely. Since Mentar (I loved your Mai-series contribution on Memento) and now Zyl seem to have taken a liking to it, how bad can it be, right? I’ll give a try, definitely.
One more question, what show does Blassreiter remind you of?
This show has been an extremely pleasant surprise for me too, and yeah Amanda is pretty awesome (in spite of her angsty little step-bro).
Blassreiter was an amazing tip. Wonderful recommendation I would have totally overlooked without Mentar’s entry on Sea Slugs. Since this seems to be “political capital” day, you just gained ALOT of that.
I don’t know…Blassreiter is full of violence, malice, death and destruction. Yikes!
…in other words, everything a growing child needs. :D
Gets brownie points for the XAT actually being, you know, actually pretty good at their monster-hunting job (unlike most such forces in these kinds of series), and issuing unisex battledresses. (Gotta wonder what exactly keeps the Amalgams from shredding their close-assault people, though…)
And largely managing to avoid obvious Japonisms.
And the Lord looked at it, and decided that is good.
Also, given the body count so far, I’ve this sneaking suspicion there may not be all that much of the initial named cast, other than Amanda and (maybe) Joseph, left alive by the late parts of the series… ;-_-
Kabitzin, non-blood related siblings is the added siscon spice! :3
I’m one of the many that never gave it a chance due to blind anti-GONZO-ism. I really liked Vandread, Full Metal Panic 1, Kaleido Star and Gankutsuou but I haven’t been able to forgive them for making train wrecks like Peacemaker Kurogane or Speed Grapher.
I gave it a chance after reading some of these comments, glad I did. It reminds me of Witch Hunter Robin, Deus Ex (the PC game) and other things, which is a good.
9 episodes in, I still find the heavy use of CG really pushing the limits of what I’ll tolerate. It’s what keeps me from recommending this to my friends. Malek too.
Despite it all, I’m willing to stick it through for the conspiracy-laden story and Shizuka Ito awesomeness. Hinagiku and Wilhelmina were my favorite characters from their respective shows too~
Oh my Mentar liked this show?? I should pick it up too. Mentar do you still blog these days? It’s been a while since I’ve seen you on designchronicle…
No time for that, Epi - fansubbing too many shows concurrently to even think about blogging. So I’ll only lurk, read, and occasionally try to hijack a comment section :P
And yes, Blassreiter is flat-out awesome in the late run to ep12. Eps 13+14 were a bit necessary dry bread flashbacks, but I think things will get back on track now.
I gave up way too fast when the CG turned me off, but I had some Bost credits that I didn’t want to use on Strike Witches because it made me vomit, so I gave Blassreiter another shot. So far I’m really behind but it’s been great. I was craving something dark that wasn’t as silly as Mnemosyne.
