Efferversence of fandom: Kyonko and MSLNFPFR

Hinano’s announcement that she has jumped on the Kyonko bandwagon was the nudge for a few thoughts, that have been fermenting away at the bottom of my mind’s barrel, to bubble to the surface. A couple of quick comments on the Kyonko phenomenon and Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS parodies of Nanoha’s ‘Full Power Full Release!’ (全力全開) catch phrase.

After Myssa Rei’s comment, I have been searching my feelings about the whole Kyonko thing. There were two things about it which did not particularly endear themselves to me. First, the girls get turned into guys. Yuki becomes Yuuki. orz orz orz orz

Second, it also got me thinking about my own double standards. I found Haruhi’s megalomaniac treatment of everyone else (particularly Mikuru) to be funny but it became much less funny when she was became a he. I agreed with Kyon that Itsuki’s face was too close but with Kyonko x female Itsuki, it’s suddenly not so bad. Likewise I am sooooo look forward to the animation of the Ryouko x Yuki scenes of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya but Ryou x Yuuki is ‘your face is too close’. Oh who am I kidding? The most vigorously enforced moral and religious prohibitions aren’t against things that are manifestly bad but the things that are the most tempting and fun! Ryou x Yuuki Y4L! It was the above beautiful water colour-style fanart by beniko (?) that made me do it! *shoots self* This whole Kyonko thing has revived Hinano’s interest in the Haruhi universe and actually made me go ‘Woohoo!’ at yaoi. That’s the power of fandom and parody. orz

StrikerS completed its airing some time ago but thoughtful commentaries continue to be written, most recently by bluemist. It never ceases to delight me what fans can read from and into MSLN, be it The Animanachronism’s philosophy-inspired piece that seems to conclude on a note reminiscent of the debates on substantialism versus relationism in sociology or NegativeZero’s classic Jungian psychological reading of the first two seasons. My own reading is rather more shallow and consists mainly of two main points: NANOHA X FATE FTW and MUST HAVE ‘A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SIGNUM-NEESAN’ OVA. :3

The series also seems to evoke similar parodies among doujinshi circles with completely different art styles and tangential takes on the Nanoverse such as Chanomi and Tamagoya; so pleased to own some of their work. On Nanoha’s ‘Full Power Full Release’ catchphrase which fits in with a ‘White Devil’ story, the former urges the sakura to flee the forthcoming mayhem, a telling contrast of the incongruity between the beautiful scenery and friendship and the enormous powers of destruction and battle mania (pink hearts!) of the cast.

The latter, on the other hand, makes fun of how the seniors take exception (link will probably expire in about a week or two, Tamagoya does that) to how the newbies think they might actually have a chance of winning and on that last day of Riot Force Six, the sound of four souls being crushed resounded through the land. Gyaaaaaa~~~ LOL Bonus LOL at how cruelly the art marginalizes Fretting Fate.

Great stuff. And free marketing that keeps fan awareness and engagement going.

Yaoi? My word Zyl, I’d thought you’d jump into the movement because of the possible YURI involved, not man-love.

My only worry about the Kyonko genderswap movement is the possibility of KyoAni foisting it on us as the Episode 00 of the second season, if the momentum builds enough (see Lucky Star). I really REALLY want to see the madness of the Haruhi theatre short stories to be done…

I thought a gender-reversed Haruhi has already been done, it was called Ouran High School Host Club, except that Kyon was named Haruhi and not Kyonko.

  3. 3 Hinano

    LOL you’re woohooing at yaoi xD;;;
Btw Tsundere man’s are hot. There’s one in the otome game I’m currently playing.

Tako: Similar, but not quite — Tamaki, while being sort of a gifted nutjob always had a central purpose for the Host Club (bringing joy to the bored womenfolk of the school), whereas Haruki, much like the original, will always look for the unboring and unknown.

You’re not the only one though that thought that way, so it’s excusable (ask RmX, the guy who started this madness on the US side).

Hahahaha, indeed. Be strong Zyl, this is how they get you!

Also remember that the concert would have not have featured bunny suit, at least not in an appealing way.

That’s the power of Yuki. Even when gender swapped. orz

*gouges my mind’s eye out* OTL

Hahahaha, indeed. Be strong Zyl, this is how they get you!

It’s people like you Kabitzin that need more fun in their lives. That’s awesome.

  8. 8 Skane

The power of Kyon-ko compels you… although the fan-project to fully translate the novels into a transgendered world seems to have slowed down a little recently.

    Cheers.

I was wondering when you would get to this and how it would effect your Nagato-ism.

I think there are several people who would like to see more stories based on the world of the God Empress and the Moe Marines. That world needs some Yuki love.

here are some Sig-nee for you Zyl

and i will never join the dark side of yaoi, too creepy.

Skane: Concerning the novel translations, a friend of mine wanted to contribute the first part of the Haruhi Theatre series (it’s the Fantasy RPG phase of the short story), but Animesuki seems to confound our (I wanted a closer view on the proceedings) efforts to register to the forums. ^^; Know of any way to work around it?

Oh, and, oddly enough, transposing the situation with a male Haruhi in the lead works, since Haruhi’s antics in the Theatre stories seem perfect for your GAR-ish and willfull Haruki.

  12. 12 Zyl

Skane, a new exemplar for the compelling power of Kyonko has arrived!

Ithekro, LOL anyone still remembers that pair of posts! Though I haven’t read the latest W40K novels yet so have been lacking inspiration…

Xellos-_^, thanks for the pic! Always great how Sig-nee is both oh so kakkoi and kawaii at the same time. Tough in pink!

Zyl: Do take a gander at some of the Horus Heresy novels. Be careful at what you select though; some, like Flight of the Eisenstein are terrific reads, others, like Fulgrim, can leave readers scratching their heads at the point of it all…

Brothers of the Snake is a nice one too. This one is by Abnett, more known for his Gaunt series of books.

Oh, and your old post was cross-referenced when the replies at Jason’s blog turned… philosophical? Pseudo-religiously zealous? Looking back, honestly, I still couldn’t believe I WROTE some of those diatribes concerning the Faith ™.
