I’ve moaned before about how London’s Forbidden Planet and Japan Centre doesn’t seem to stock MEGAMI. But I happened to see that evil magazine in the display window of Orbital Comic’s Moor Street branch. And the price was just shinjirarenai.

GBP 9.50! WTF!? How much does MEGAMI cost off the shelf in whichever part of the world that you reside in, my readers?
At current exchange rates, this costs more than three times its JPY 780 Japan retail price! Ok, it’s still cheaper than if I had ordered it via Amazon.co.jp with shipping and handling. But at least there’s one shop selling it here.
Even so, Orbital seems two months behind the Japanese release schedule. Luckily for me, Stripey has already collected my copy of MEGAMI 93 back home in our glorious democratic people’s island republic paradise.
Although MEGAMI 91 has a nice Nanoha x FEITO cover, it doesn’t seem to have the magazine’s usual evil power. My usual sources of information, Shingo and Kurogane, weren’t even sufficiently inspired to review it. And a check on the usual image boards confirmed that there weren’t any posters (main poster was from Da Crapo II apparently) in this issue that I wanted either so that’s some money saved. :3 [Actually I *did* ask Stripey to buy me a cover. Must have been the power of the cover. orz]
For some mysterious reason, Orbital Comic’s site just displays a big fat empty white page. I’ve tried both Firefox and IE on my home as well as at my work connection but I can’t get anything from the site. But it seems quite like my experience at the Moor Street branch where the staff were too busy chatting among themselves and I had to find out the price of the magazine myself. :(

DC II may have a lousy ending (for the first season anyway), but the Nanaka-Yume poster in this month’s Megami makes me hope for a beach episode in DC II SS…

Mexican reader here. I’ve only seen Megami in a comicbook-related store called Comicastle, with about 2 or 3 months of delay, and they sell it at 180 pesos. According to Google, it’s about 16.57 dollars or 8.34 pounds: pricey, but not as much as in England.
I presume GBP 9.50 is cheap for the locals. At least they get a single digit price. Over here, Megami’s (if available at all) are in double digit prices.
Still, exchange rate makes for a really bad yardstick in determining the cost of a product.
I can’t exactly remember what was in that issue of Megami, but I do own it as well :P.
I’ve never, EVER seen a JP Megami here. I used to get Newtype JP though, and they were what, 800 Php? That’s like 2100 Yen, which is ALMOST FOUR TIMES the standard price - 590 Yen. Add any mailing charges I might have and that’s still cheaper.
Fuck retailers and their exorbitant pricing.
suguru, bishoujo hope springs eternal ne? ;)
kanami, Zeroblade, thanks!
Kurogane, yeah it’s true that GBP 9.50 is a good price for the locals. But since I can ask Stripey to get me the same thing at a much lower price back in Singapore, I can’t help but factor in the currency difference. The only drawback is the months of delayed gratification. But that’s what image boards are for in the meantime! :3
I know it costs roughly $25-$28 AUD to buy a copy of Megami from the local Kinokuniya, although a bit more than the actual ¥780, when you factor in shipping and such, it actually works out to be an alright price.
Buying at kknm and kino is about SGD 17.80 to 18.60 per issue of Megami, though I think you know that already. ^_^
My take on Megami 91
Adun, looks like Kinokuniya is at the forefront of preying on gaijin otaku wallets in Oz as well as Singapore and NYC. I don’t think there’s a branch in London… though I was really surprised the first time I realized that Kinokuinya’s main business in Jp is actually as a groceries supermarket chain!
abao, ‘Nanoha x Fate = $ spent without thinking…’ You are a true fan of the True Pairing of the MSLN franchise. :) NANOHA X FEITO BANZAI!!!
Kinokuniya in SF is pretty pricey also, but one of the few places to find Yotsuba!&
Out of curiosity, how exactly does Stripey get the goods to you? Does he just ship them all in one big package when they reach critical mass, or does he give them to you whenever you visit the glorious democratic people’s island republic paradise?
Spyhunter, not surprised to hear that there’s a Kinokuniya in SF… strange to hear that it’s pricey because I thought CA would be a pretty big market…
Ender, usually the latter. Cheaper and wider variety of anime goods (no added S&H) is verily one of the reasons why Stripey lives in an island paradise!
