Minami Ke 11-13

I am so jealous!!

Misbuttoning is the new bandages.

I wonder what Hosaka will say if he finds just how close Natsuki has been to Haruka. So jealous is me still.

Seeing an unambiguously cute side of Chiaki was nice and a great contrast to her usual authoritarian grumpiness to everyone except Haruka. Overall, good job, Minorin!

Haruka - porn sigh version. Normal version is much better!

Haruka’s oneesama magic brings peace, harmony and love with sparkles. If we combine her with Tama-chan magic, we might just be able to bring about the salvation of the world (without breaking its egg).

I am still amazed that Touma is voiced by Nana Mizuki. In contrast, regardless of Yukari Tamura’s roles, I can’t help but listen just a bit of Mizuki’s MSLN compatriot voice work before going: ‘LOL that’s Nanoha!’ I enjoy Tamura’s voice acting but it’s just so… unique… and distinctive… but most of all, so… LOL Nanoha. LOL

The things Mako-chan does for Oneesama Love. Mako-chan, you are truly a man among men! None of all that gay GAR muscle-bound shouting, angsting and fighting (with big phallic toy robot toys)!

Other signs of REAL manliness, as opposed to the homoeroticism that little boys think is manliness, are, of course, going ‘Wai~ wai~ kawaii~’ (seemingly a staple of married men). Or so how about asking your boy/girlfriend to FORCE you to watch anime that you otherwise wouldn’t touch with a ten foot barge pool and a million dollars? Only if you have one to force you to, that is. If you do.

Stripey: Stop picking fights with the readers!

Hosaka’s simulations are truly disturbing. What a whacko. But at least we had a glimpse of this evening gown and pearls Haruka. The tempura soba made me sooooo hungry, even if my hunger was vanquished by Hosaka’s serving pun, almost a match for Kabitzin’s Punny Powers.

Can you really get drunk on non-alcoholic juice? I’ve heard of the powers of prune juice but not this!

When I first saw Hayami, her chara design reminded me of Sei Satou. Looks like the looks weren’t the only similarity…

OH SHIT!

Shizuma-sama!

Chikane-chan!

Shizuru!

I think Natsuki certainly got the better end of the bargain.

So there is such a thing as the operation of the laws of karma as Kana gets back what she tried to do to Chiaki in the first (?) episode. Accordingly, I think Stripey probably either have lots of lolilicious daughters (and he can continuously scream: ‘I will NOT approve any boyfriend!!!”) or a Da Capo situation on his tanuki paws as and when Haruhi-sama blesses him and his wife with childrens.

I did find it hard to get into the series initially, mostly because while I am fond of dumb characters (e.g. Osaka from Azumanga, Misao and Tsukasa from Lucky Star etc) and of witty sociopaths (e.g. Miu Matsuoka from Ichigo Mashimaro), the combination of dumb sociopath in Kana was difficult to swallow. But with Haruka-neesama moving into the spotlight, I got hooked. I also became more sympathetic to Kana after her little breakdown in front of Chiaki (ep 8?) and even enjoyed the late entry of several supporting characters especially Mako-chan, Uchida and Touma. Overall, a fun and enjoyable series.

Looking forward to Okawari, especially since, as noted by Omni, it’s got quite a few members of asread’s SHUFFLE! team onboard. Going to be weird if they change the teardrop mouth though.

I think a lot of viewers are put off by Kana, since she isn’t really lovably dumb as she is obnoxiously dumb. However, she introduces such incredible situations that I have nothing but respect for her skills.

I didn’t even realize that the teardrop mouth could be endangered! Should it be saved, or is this evolution?!

I think I had the same experience you did…I almost dropped this early on because Kana was grating on me, but somehow she got more tolerable as the series went on, and Haruka and Chiaki were a lot of fun to watch. It ended up being better than I expected, looks like from the preview the first ep of Okawari will level up the fanservice too.

  3. 3 W4

    Okay. I’ll say it.

    NatsukixHaruka FTW!

  4. 4 Totali

LOL I’m glad I’m not the only one who has the exact same reactions towards Yukari Tamura’s voice.

and what the heck guys! Kana is like the best character kthx.

Kabitzin, that reminds me of your distinction between Saber and Shirou. Plus, of course, Saber is female and cute. ;) The transition should be less jarring as the same seiyuu team is returning but unless the teardrop mouth is fundamental to the manga art, it might need endangered species protection!

suguru, huzzah! asread’s SHUFFLE! fanservice was pretty satisfying, not sure if they’ve got the same scope since Minami Ke wasn’t based on an eroge.

    W4, NOOOOOOOOESSSS!!! Zyl x Haruka FTW! :P

Totali, when I heard Ink-chan I just burst out: LOL Nanoha! re: Kana is your favourite chara. GREAT! One less competitor to vanquish for the love of Haruka-neesama! :3

Ewwww. Not NatsukixHaruka, that’s sick D:
Love this anime! Season 2 will be awesome ^_^

    Zyl x Haruka?

    Zyl… you have lost it.

A grown man like you should realize the bitter truth. You need a strong-willed tsundere to keep you on the straight and narrow. Go for Hinagiku; you should be able to snag her on the rebound after Hayate eunichizes himself. >8D

  8. 8 Zyl

    Ahaha~ :3

  9. 9 Watchman

For some reason, I always had this nagging impression a huge-ass demon lord would turn up if Hayami ever opens her eyes… :/

Random side note: one wonders if Hosaka-senpai and his magnificently repulsive fantasies weren’t a kind of long-running, vicious parody of the trope schoolyard romance scenarios and the obligatory accompanying “perfect wife” female character types (which Haruka rather fails to be) ?

  10. 10 Demon Eyes

I loved the Opening Eyes Sequence of Hayami’s.

And this is the only time I remember seeing Kana blush…Good sign perhaps?

Well, she sure did get the best out of the first season.

Wait, doesn’t this make er the first of the three Minami sisters to get a kiss?

I love Kana…I love the characters…I love the whole series.

Second stuffin’ get here already damn you.

  11. 11 Zyl

I forgot to mention this but Hayami’s Eye Opening Sequence made me think of Chiyo’s Dad (in Sakaki’s imagination) and I just waiting for her to say something like: I am a cat. 0_0

Um…. I hate to break it to you, but that was about as ‘non-alcoholic’ as Shizuru Fujino is heterosexual. Translation: it’s not, and Hayami-senpai seemed to suggest that with her rather wry comment that they couldn’t show minors drinking booze… yet everyone got plastered ANYWAYS. You do NOT talk about ‘top grade’ juices or ‘premium’ juices: 100% pure, not from concentrate maybe, but not ‘top grade’, unless you’re discussing booze.

And anyone who talks about his wild manly spirit is overcompensating - I’m sorry, Mako-chan, but this means you. Just accept the cards you’re dealt, and come out of the closet before the OTHER crossdresser, lest you be branded with the same ‘girl being manly’ brush. I’m more concerned by how Touma kept trying to stop Uchida from keeping Mako-chan’s underwear on, and what this may mean for the future, or Touma’s thoughts on the matter. Did she want to wear his underwear too?

However, Minami-ke is a series which survives on its humor, not its fanservice (even if Natsuki and Hayami-senpai have given us some of it, along with Hosaka’s delusions). I will fear for Okawari if they go all fanservicey like Rosario + Vampire, rather than keeping it a comedy with some… interesting elements.

By the way, was anyone else tempted to add a ‘horrified scream’ sound effect in the background once Hayami-senpai opened her eyes? It’s almost like we got to see the inner psycho there, with the pupiless gaze reminiscent of School Days.

  13. 13 Watchman

Does Japan have some sort of weird, bass-ackwards “Comics Code” thing for anime regarding minors and alcohol, anyway ? I don’t know how the M-K manga had it, but I do know in Umisho the anime adaptation quite conspicuously involved at one episode honest-to-God sake (or “tasty water”, as one put it…) changing into hallucinogenic mushrooms…
    O_o
…which would sound like exactly the kind of pointless strangeness that lingering ill-conceived (nevermind hypocritical) laws tend to inflict upon media.

  14. 14 Zyl

about as ‘non-alcoholic’ as Shizuru Fujino is heterosexual.

LOL, that’d make plenty more sense re: everyone getting plastered.

IMHO Touma was just getting into the spirit of things since going commando is traditional but it’s also not her kimono that gets contaminated by Mako-chan. Which is how the latecomer knows that the kimono belongs to Uchida and not Touma.

Hayami’s eyes. LOL at Watchman’s Rezo reference though, of course, such a suitable topic for Demon Eyes.

  15. 15 ShoujoGirl

Yay! Can’t wait the 2nd season.
All the episodes were funny to watch. I liked all characters.

And DemonEyes, I think Kana was the best as well!

Zyl: I’m just slightly floored by the idea that Saeko Chiba was the one behind Hayami-senpai… which made me think alternately ‘Chika has her revenge on Miu!’ and ‘So Natsuki FINALLY got to Shizuru someone’…

Watchman: I think it’s more they’re extremely conscious of bad behavior right now, in the wake of the School Days thing and the rise of news articles and TV reports about how otaku culture is responsible for a rising wave of crime in Japan, which was highlighted/parodied by Konata’s complaints about how mainstream media was blaming otaku for everything (dating sims causing guys to stalk schoolgirls and kidnap them was one she paid great attention to).

“…the combination of dumb sociopath in Kana was difficult to swallow.
The “dumb” is (at least partially) an act. Go back and watch a couple key scenes, and you might notice her sociopathy is not quite as dumb as it seems. Her line to Yoshino about the one sentence causing such an interesting situation in the last episode, and her setup of Santa Fujioka in the episode before just so she can call Chiaki an idiot for believing in him both come to mind.

The only thing I was thinking when i saw the Hayami-senpai eye-opening scene was “A KANA IS FINE TOO…” I knew she was going to be a blast of a character from the scene in Hosaka’s first ep where she drops the chopsticks upon finding out he made the food.

  18. 18 Haesslich

quigonkenny: I’m imagining a 4chan response to that last scene in the Minami household. Something along the lines of “TY 4 lesbian fanservice’ or something like that.

  19. 19 Zyl

quigonkenny, I don’t disagree with you, that Kana’s sociopathy is not quite as dumb as it seems - it just took me about five episodes to see that. It also helped that she’s not the main attraction for me. ;)

Haesslich, speaking of proper nouns that become verbs ‘to shizuru’ LOL

  20. 20 Haesslich

Given what happened in Mai-Hime, what else would you call it with this seiyuu involved? Especially with Shizuru herself getting Shizuru’d in Otome? I find it hard to reconcile either the lone wolf Natsuki or humourless version with the Chika role or the woman who sung Sakura Kiss wearing a frog ’suit’ with Hayami-senpai.

And the nuzzle makes it clear what her attentions were going to be about. That is a textbook Shizuru moment. Thank you again, Hayami-senpai.

  21. 21 Haesslich

Ah, screwed up the last reference. Ignore that one with Sakura Kiss.

  22. 22 Watchman

It occurs to me Hayami’s really a bit worrisome, when you look at it objectively. I mean, Kana’s what - 13? 14? o_O Makes you wonder about her a bit I’d say. It’s one thing to get along with your friend’s prepubescent younger siblings (or your younger sibling’s friends, like Kana does with Chiaki’s), and quite another to try to forcibly bed them when you’re drunk as a monkey… >_<

As that lawyer puts it in Ratatouille, “should I be concerned about this? Or about… you?”

She’s going to grow up a bad, bad person, I suspect.
    Ah well, quess that mainly just unquestionably qualifies her as a proper EPL(tm), if now a mild one - since when did we really regard dodgy ethics as a demerit in a funny and interesting character anyway ? >_>;
