You’re Under Arrest Full Throttle 1

I pass the test. I will diminish, and go into Bokuto, and remain a Miyuki x Natsumi fan. *returns salute*

I tried to lower my expectations, given that reactions thus far to Full Throttle have been rather mixed, but my heart still sank like a rock when I found myself seriously unimpressed by the OP.

Why were my expectations so high? Nostalgia? Selective memory? After all, the OVA was fantastic (especially from the MxN angle), the first season was nice but the second season ranged over mediocre to excruciating. As I told Stripey over our latest Hontou ni Skype conference, if YUAFT was really bad, it’d be like running into your first crush at the mall and seeing her haggard, frazzled, being tugged by a scrum of screaming little runts (all from different fathers) and sporting a black eye, courtesy of the latest bastard who’s fcuking her.

But as the episode progressed, I found myself relaxing, smiling and then finally enjoying it. My annoyance at the new chara-designs, the kid, slightly stilted animation, they all melted away as the OTTness reminded me of the good ole days. It’s sooo good to have our two most powderful policewomans back!

And the ED was just manna from the heavens for fellow Miyuki x Natsumi fans:

Revolutionary Girl Utena shadow puppets?

I thought this was a kiss. 0_0

Alas, no. How the studio loves to tease us so.

Hands clasped together always good.

Hands clasped together while nekkid even better.

Aikawarazu rabu rabu desu ka?

And the ED song was lovely too, set against the sunset, just a touch of melancholy and wistfulness that represents LFB (loser fanboy) longing for MOAR MxN.

I was disappointed by the pandering of the ED to rogue yuri fans.

What, you’re accusing the marketing departement folks of doing their job of Pandering The Audience* For Fun And Profit properly ?

    *= LFBs ^_^;

I just had an epiphany, thanks to your spot-on use of Galadriel’s monologue there. Bear with me as I explain…

I was sitting in the LotR movie and watching how they shredded that very scene, then I quietly got up and left. Later, I was talking to an acquaintance who professed to have read the book and how he LOVED the movie. I hated the movie, because I love the book.

And then I read your review and thought – but, I enjoyed YUAFT, what’s the problem? And then the epiphany hit.

Yes, a bit of it is retro-fitting our memories to your first time being teh awesome, but the bottom line is, I liked YUA unconditionally because I am not a raving fan of the original. It was a nice anime. And manga, and live action series. But I did not love it. So, I had no expectations for this season. As a result, I am free to enjoy it with hardly anything to compare it to.

Heaven help me if I grow to love this hugely mediocre series…. :-)

    Cheers,

    Erica

I think that’s my problem with Full Throttle…I loved the OVAs, and with those expectations in mind it didn’t stand a chance. Hopefully I can enjoy the rest of the series with lowered expectations for it, because I really like the cast.

Pandering is good. :) I’m wondering if the burning house scene in the ED is just window dressing or is it actually going to happen in the anime itself?

Expectations. The secret of happiness (or at least to enjoy your anime) is indeed to have no expectations. But it’s easier said than done as per the LoTR example. I wonder how YUAFT will compare with the Aa Megami-sama anime that aired some time ago (but not too long ago)?

Characters. Yeah, I just love the two main leads and their…ahem.. dynamics. BTW what happened to the newbie from Season 2?

I wouldn’t mind if YUA turn YURI. I always thought Miyuki was too good for Ken anyway. And MxN looks good together.

love the ending song, thats the way it should be. I don’t understand the appeal of Ken anyways; it makes sense why Miyuki doesn’t do anything about the statis quo, doesn’t really want him anyways. LOL

i think ken is too much man for miyuki. she doesn`t strives for anything but he is capable to give his life to her!!
at the first season she was as interested as he was, but now the writers let the relationship cold… too bad
