WarHaruhi 40,000

It is the 41st millennium. For more than a hundred centuries
the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Otaku.
She is the master of otakukind by the will of KyoAni, and the master
of a million blogs by the might of her inexhaustible fan armies. She
is a plotting character writhing invisibly with power from the Dark
Age of Technology. She is the Carry-on Lord of the Imperium for
whom a thousand wallets are sacrificed every day, so that She may
never truly die.

Yet even in Her deathless state, the Emperor continues Her
eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the boredom-infested
miasma of the Warped, the only route between distant stars, their
way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the
Emperor’s will. Vast fan armies give battle in Her name on uncounted
worlds. Greatest amongst Her soldiers are the Adeptus Asahina,
the Space Moérines, time-travelling super-cosplayers. Their comrades
in arms are legion: the SOS Brigades and countless planetary
defence forces, the ever-vigilant esper Organization of the Inquisition and
the tech-priests of the Integrated Data Sentient Entity to name only a few.
But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever
present threat from haters, heretics, Lovely Idol fans - and worse.

To be a fan in such times is to be one amongst untold
billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most capricious
regime imaginable. There are the tales of those times.
Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has
been innovated, only to be used for fapping. Forget the promise of
progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future
there is only war. There is no peace amongst the interwebs,
only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the
laughter of thirsting merchandisers.

City-wide Taiyaki Mystery Patrol

In the course of my (still ongoing) literature review of anime blogging about Kanon, I finally realized that my search parameters in The Hunt for Taiyaki in London was far too narrow, as I was on the lookout for the hot, freshly made taiyaki from a bakery. No joy, of course. There are plenty of Japanese living in London and plenty of shops that sell Japanese groceries but they don’t sell the type that Ayu eats-and-runs.

Clued in by Hinano’s Taiyaki Chronicles, I switched to searching for the packed type. And found it at (where else?) Japan Centre, Piccadilly.

Kanon F-4 Decoy Disengaged

Indeed, Miss Taiyaki-uguu. I haven’t been reading or blogging about Kanon to avoid spoilers thus the total media blackout. Not having seen the Toei version, my knowledge of the game/series was limited to 1) ‘Sad girls in snow’ 2) Mai x SaYuri FTW and 3) the remake is by KyoAni. And I did enjoy it. Kanon did surprise me a few times. In a ‘Wow! I should have seen that coming!’ delighted way rather than a ‘WTF!? SUNRISE KNNBCCB!’ sort of surprise. And the series succeeded in transmorgifying my dislike for most of the Kanon girls, often via a short scene, into sympathy and even adoration.

The Joy of DVD Boxset Bargains

…and thinpaks 4TW. Bought this boxset, via Amazon.co.uk, for GBP 29.99 (free shipping in the UK!) inclusive an ab fab pre-order discount of 25% (and inclusive of the humongous 17.5% Socialist Democratic Peoples’ Value Added Tax). The discount has been reduced but Forbidden Planet has wised up (at least at the Shaftesbury Avenue mothership) and is now offering the Stand Alone Complex and 2nd Gig boxsets for GBP 29.99 each until 2007-05-31.

Price-wise, TSRI’s offering at USD 48.99 is still unbeatable value for US-based fans (though 1 cent under the free economy shipping threshold LOL) but there’s the whole hassle and added cost of shipping plus the risk of getting slapped with the VAT and Royal Mail handling charge on its way into Her Majesty’s Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Overall, well pleased with my purchase at a very reasonable price of just under SGD 90; it’s genuine stuff at DVD quality (rather than VCD quality on DVD discs from you-know-who) and English subs that are, at last, at least as good as Laughing Man Fansubs. Zyl a very happy fanboy. MOTOKO~~~~!!

Stress Testing the Okazu-Hetero Criterion

It’s odd to hyphenate the words “Okazu” and “hetero”. I hasten to ground this in a primary source - Erica’s post about how she responds to a yuri series - if the relationship was a heterosexual one, would she still go “Cool…” or “HAWT!” Given that I am pre-disposed to accept her assumptions about norms and aesthetics (except when it comes to Ikkitousen *puke*), I also think the Okazu-Hetero Criterion is an excellent heuristic.

Except when it comes to the first Ichigo Mashimaro OVA which Erica also enjoyed. Ok, there’s no overt romance but IMHO it would still be unbearably creepy if Nobue was an oniichan instead of an oneesama. In the former case, even if Chika, Miu, Ana and Matsuri had also made the gender switch. There’s just something about the way that I’ve been socialized that gives a lot more leeway to female-on-female touchy-feeliness. Which further reinforces my belief that Oneesamas are win. ;)
