… was when I got the above piece of junk mail and my first thought was: ‘Yes, but what about all those catgirls that God kills because people drag real physics into discussions about anime?’ I invite you, gentle reader, to share your moment(s) of epiphany when the realization dawned upon you that you were an otaku.
I have seen better slogans. ^^;
Like the latest catchphrase in Singapore’s campaign against the Aedes Mosquito.
“They Breed. You Bleed.”
Short, succinct, and straight to the point.

As for the real topic. I dunno… I first started watching anime because I wanted gore in my animation, and I wasn’t getting enough of it from Western Cartoons. Akira and Spriggan were like manna (not mana) for my enjoyment-level, and were amongst the first few anime I started watching (oh those late nights…).
I have no idea how I went on to watch “adorable anime”. Was it Love Hina that started the trend? *shrugs* I like visceral entertainment, such as the recent movie, “300″. Somewhere, along the line, I evolved to appreciate cuteness and stuff. Hmm…
Natch.
Does going “gao” in front of your professors count? XD
I just knew.
I dunno when it dawned on me, but those eejits I knew calling themselves ‘otaku’ and comparing Megami to FHM certainly pushed me in the right direction. Then I kinda fell into aniblogging, and, well, there you go.
I bought a figure.
When I bought all the Gundam books I could find when I was in High School.
I moved all my manga to my school locker. So that I could be closer to them.
When I bought over 1120 GBs of portable hard drives to bring anime with me for government sponsored trips. That and I bought a new laptop expressly for that purpose in addition to hijacking whatever civilian terminal I can find. Also when I I took a look at my manga library populated by shoujo series.
*stares at the top pic*
anyone who would light up a cute fuzzball like that needs a slow painful death.
I’ve known myself to be a geek/nerd/otaku for long enough I can’t remember when I realized it.
When I started listing the anime I had watched before on a forum (because that was the thread topic) and got temp-banned for spamming.
@DKellis: WOW!
When my computer crashed and my first impulse was to call for Skuld.
This was shortly before I looked at a coastal residential development and thought “not good for Second Impact.”
When I first thought to myself, ‘Damn, I actually bought 30 books of Naruto’.
Same as super rats, heh…when I bought a figure.
Thanks, everyone, for sharing. Merchandise esp figure buying seems to figure (pun intended, orz) quite strongly. My friends always look strangely at my Lunamaria ’shrine’ when they visit but no one’s asked me about her yet. Haha!
Come to think of it, I also said ‘orz’ once during a meeting with my supervisor. -_-;;
Let’s see, was it when I was looking a pictures of Rose of Versailles and kept expecting Oscar to be mentioned…or was it when I was reading the sports page and saw an article about Team Ferrari, and thought of Haruka.
Maybe it was when I was teaching Taiji in a local high school and every time I turned to do single whip, I saw the sign for the Student Council Valentine’s Day Rose sale….
I became an otaku the day I first heard Ogata Megumi say “ja” as Tenoh Haruka. It’s all been downhill from there. :-)
Cheers,
Erica
