Welcome to the new home of ‘hontou ni sou omou?’
The current domain name and hosting plan with Dreamhost expires in a month. Despite much inertia after four years with DH, I have finally knuckled down to transplant the hontou ni blogs to a new domain, after almost six months of proscratinating, under a new host which is 30% cheaper, has got a 99.9% uptime guarantee AND has only one “[hostname] sucks” as opposed to 17,400 hits for my soon to be ex provider.

Notes on the move:
The automatic WordPress installation module is located under Fantastico of the cPanel’s scripts and programs menu.
How to backup and restore a WordPress database
How to move a WordPress blog to a new URL or domain
Had to manually create the .htaccess file, prompted when updating the permalink structure and then to change its permissions. Permissions for the cache directory was also a particular issue for the Extended Live Archive plugin (0.10beta R18) as noted here.
Am so glad that almost all my img src HTML was non-domain specific so I only had to FTP in the images to a sub-directory with the same name as it was in the old domain. The Manage Posts menu made it easy to hunt down and change a href links as the search function also goes into the HTML. Phew! Everything was finished, from registering the new domain to achieving blog REDCON2, within three days.
[Transferred comment] Hosting companies profit off inertia. I was vastly overcharged for my hosting and while procrastinating on whether I should downgrade to a cheaper plan (bastards told me I have to move everything myself to another server) they sneakily charged my card for another year of hosting.
Congratulations on your new home! I would have made a casserole (a traditional American dish for new next door neighbors), but by the time it arrived, it would have been kind of ick.
Good luck with your new host!
Cheers,
Erica

Glad to see that the move went smoothly. Hopefully, this means the end of seeing “Error: Unable to Connect” in my Feed Tracker when it comes to your blog and Stripey’s. ^^;
Cheers.
[Transferred comment] Do a review sometime down the road k.
I’m starting to hit very high bandwidth usage per month. Ok, not that high, but I prefer singapore hosting, and those don’t offer too much bandwidth. Wonder what I should do. haiz
Thanks, Erica! Keeping my fingers crossed with the new host. I was pretty happy with Dreamhost until after the problems of the great big blackout about a year ago.
Skane, I think that might have been caused by The Last Straw - a particularly long period of DH down time over last weekend. Please let me know if you have any problems with the new blog.
Grats on the upgrade, and it’s good to hear that everything went smoothly. Oddly enough, I never noticed any downtime with the Hontou ni sites, but I’ve heard some bad things about DH hosting in general.
tjhan, wah lao, that’s too much, man, the sneaky extra year charge. I would have disputed the charge when the credit card bill came under the reason ‘good/service not received’.
TedFox, I haven’t been watching much anime and very busy school and social life, thus the drop in anime blogging productivity. I hope the new offerings will help my blogging to pick up a bit. about high bandwidth, quite a lot of it could be spambots… You’ve tried the Bad Behaviour plug-in?
Kabitzin, thanks! Downtime could be a PST vs UTC time zone thing. But the worst were when the server went down in the middle of typing a post! And those loooong whole weekend downtimes. Right now, my Dreamhost-hosted site is down again - check out their very busy outage notification blog.
Lol, if you don’t mind, you can always whack to ab.net, tedfox. Of course, you might have to change a little because hosting groups are always quite meh.
Gratz on the switch and I should edit my links very soon~
