The AGP chipset driver won't install because apparently a file is missing or corrupt. About your second option, what it looks like is that the AGP controller is in conflict with the VGAsave. I have thought about disabling the VGAsave but then I'll need an external monitor to work with after that plus there's no guarantee that, if the conflict is resolved, that the chipset and ATI drivers will install. Looks like I'll have to go with your last suggestion (also suggested by Kurogane) for a complete re-install. (Which is also the conclusion that Compaq service support has also reached after trying all sorts of restores and BIOS upgrades.) Sigh.
