On hiatus due to technical difficulties

I’ve done something really stupid and now my display isn’t working properly. As some of you might have seen from previous photos, I use a Compaq Presario X1000 on WinXP (SP2). Had just uninstalled Virtual Drive Creator and deleted all the associated DLLs by mistake. This was compounded by running Windows with Japanese regional settings so all the content of the dialogue boxes was symbolly. Lo and behold, when I rebooted, it was in 800 x 600 VGAsav.

Probably could have just remedied it by downloading and replacing the relevant DLLs but I panicked and uninstalled the ATI driver and control panel and then tried to re-install with updated drivers provided on the ATI website (Catalyst 6.11). Found out that I had to install MS .NET Framework 2.0 first but no joy after that either. “SEVERE. Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adaptor with a standard VGA driver before running setup.”

As far as I can tell (from the Device Manager under System Information), there isn’t even a Display - the ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 isn’t even being detected. I’m guessing that it’s because the “Intel(R) 82855PM Process to AGP Controller - 3341″ has got this yellow exclamation mark next to it: “This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use (Code 12).” From the forum threads I’ve browsed, it seems that this device needs to be enabled before Radeon can be detected and the drivers installed. Tried System Restore but it can’t find any difference between now and the last point. Haven’t do a full reinstall because I don’t have the WinXP install CD.

The display still kind of works and but I can still watch anime but it’s rather rough around the edges with pixellation and websurfing is painful because of refresh drag when I scroll down. Absolutely no mood to blog even though I’ve been delighted by Solid State Society and the MariMite OVA. orz
