Black Lagoon 16

Mainly a set-up episode. Greenback Jane is threatened by her employers to come up with better counterfeit USD [ISO 4217]. The boss demonstrates his impatience by killing her assistant. Later she escapes and, being totally unfamiliar with Roanapur, seeks refuge at the Church of Violence. Not knowing the town and spurning his guide’s advice, the boss - with the impropable name of Elvis - starts a gun battle that he has scurry away from. Jane explains the situation to Revy, Sisters Yolunda, Eda and Brother Rico; she leaves at the end. Elvis hires a cowboy to track her down and he gathers a motley crew of the Roanarpur underworld including Shen Ho (from the Guerillas in the Jungle arc) and an undertaker in the style of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Not quite as slick as the Buddha Bar but the altar of the Church of Violence’s good enough for a drinking session on a hot hot day. Quite funny how Revy woke up and couldn’t remember how she shot up her own room (and more importantly, her air conditioning). Eda seems to enjoy teasing Revy about Rock; it’s been a year since he’s joined the Lagoon Company!

In his ignorance, Elvis provokes Revy and Eda.

Revy’s bid for entry into the pantheon.

Sister Yolunda > Soldats Sisters

The Church of Violence displays its mettle. I’m guessing that no RPGs or other explosive type munitions were deployed because it would not be cost effective. It’s times like this that it pays to have Revy as your house guest. LOL Oh, and the belt feed for the machine gun has mysteriously disappeared…

No disrespect to the mighty USD but this just felt slightly dated. The quest for the perfect counterfeit USD seems to have been achieved with the advent of the superdollar. Besides, counterfeiters have shifted their attention to the EUR since its largest denomination is 500 - much higher payoff than the USD’s maximum of 100.

Oh, for my resident-in-Singapore readers, I heartily recommend Jeon Joonho’s digital animation works on the USD which are on display at City Hall for the Singapore Biennale (running until 2006-11-12), on loan from the Arario Gallery in Seoul. In God We Trust (2004) “uses the back of the one-dollar bill as a backdrop, while in the foreground people ask directions for Independence Hall. They keep asking, but nobody tells them. In the second part, Jeon reads the 1919 Korean Declaration of Independence while standing on the face of Thomas Jefferson as it appears on the two-dollar bill. After reading the declaration, he walks out of Independence Hall. On the soundtrack is Tahyangsari, a popular Korean song from the colonial period lamenting life away from the homeland. In THE WHITE HOUSE [2005], the artist appears against the facade of the White House as it is shown on the twenty-dollar bill.” (Kim Sunjung, Professor of the Korea National University of the Arts in the Exhibition Short Guide, p.86)

Next week, the Roanarpur Freakshow Circus comes performs in its home town!

Holy crap! That was REVY? I thought it was Alucard for a sec! The facial animators certiainly like to take liberties with this show.

    >>>Revy’s bid for entry into the pantheon.

Bid? I think that shot’s guaranteed a place of honor. At an estimated emo rating of 20 USD (”USO DA,” also known as “Sonozaki Units”) it’d currently be the highest rated shot on the page.

    Some random thoughts…

..) Elvis automatically failed as a mobster the moment he killed the assistant. You don’t motivate your minions by killing them. You don’t see Balalaika killing her footmen when they fail her.

..) He failed even more when he tried to act big in front of Revy and Eda. One does not survive in the world of crime by acting superior to people you know nothing about. Imagine if he had acted that way in front of Hotel Moscow… RPGs? They’ll probably bust a T-72 from a wall and blow his car to kingdom come.

..) The recruitment scene reminded us how seriously out of their league Elvis’ mob is. It was like a kitten trying to hire lions.

..) OMG! Is that Sugita Tomokazu( aka Kyon) I hear? Yes it is! He’s doing the VA work for the wizard guy( buddy of the flamecaster). Good gravy! He’s invading every single anime I watch! SHnY, H&C, Inukami, Shuffle, Kanon2006, YamatoNSH, MS-Lyrical Nanoha A’s/Strikers, Bleach, Pani Poni Dash, etc…

..) Oland, eat your heart out. Sister Yolunda has the real door-knocker. 1-shot explosions for the win.

    Narf!

Skane: “OMG! Is that Sugita Tomokazu( aka Kyon) I hear? Yes it is!”

He’s quickly becoming the male Megumi Hayashibara. Except she hasn’t done much lately. But you know what I mean. He only needs a couple more A-level roles (beyond Kyon and Yuuichi II) to solidify that claim.

And on a somewhat related note, is it wrong to start referring to Kanon2K6 as “Tsukimiya Ayu no Yuuichi”?

“Next week, the Roanarpur Freakshow Circus comes performs in its home town!”

What’s this? Shenhua, Eda, and Revy all in one episode? That’s going to induce some serious fapping amongst fans.

Someone get Jason Miao to blog this episode, stat - that emo face was completely out of direction for the series… but it fits SO well. “SOMEONE SHOT UP MY DRINK!”

Fansub for Ep16 is out. Eda proves that she is a schemer as well. She was the one that set up this arc.
