The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya IV

And there I was, thinking that since I had converted to Yukiism by the time of the previous post on this episode and therefore I should have less to screencap second time round. Hooo boy! Still loads of Yuki screens to be captured! Much exploding of Zyl due to moé overload as well.

Episode shuffling-wise, having this episode in chronological order does make more sense but the anime broadcast order also helped to preserve Yuki’s air of mystery before subjecting us to two concentrated and consecutive blasts in this episode and Day of Sagitarius (ep 10 in the broadcast order).

I still find it funny that Yuki’s handwriting is, appropriately, like a printout’s.

Yuki as silent witness to Kyon’s first (?) successful attempt at foiling an Evil Haruhi Plot to exploit Mikuru. I liked how expressive they were with respect to their shock - Kyon at the sight of Mikuru’s maid photos on the SOS Dan website’s top page and Haruhi at Kyon’s audacity in appearing to delete them.

Now that I’ve read the novel translations, rewatching the series is hugely rewarding - this scene being just one example. The novel tells us that the SOS Dan members (other than Haruhi) use Yuki’s closing of her book as an indicator that it’s time to call it a day for club activities. LOL! Love the evening light btw.

The main reason why there are so many (non-repeated) screencaps is the sheer details in the frames of the action scenes. This is another example of how screencapping for animeblogging actually makes me go “Wow!” at the animation and find more gems to enshrine in worship of Yuki. The novel describes the fight in some detail but KyoAni has really delivered on it with good quality animation, music, voice-acting, the lot!

Given that I’m a character worshipper who caps changes in my favourite characters’ expressions, KyoAni has really impressed me with how much they put into the anime compared with others *coughGSDcough* where the number of key frames and the in-between frames are actually quite poor. Case in point:

I was almost tempted to do a frame-by-frame capture as it was hard to catch some of this just using Pause but then the number of caps would have become unmanageable…

I wonder if the sound effects for Yuki’s SQL queries would actually reveal a speeded up version of the SQL queries listed in the novel?

Absolutely loved this pose of Yuki’s. Loved it. Although she’s so small, the pose itself speaks of strength, confidence and protectiveness all at the same time.

Again, the attention to detail with scraps of Yuki’s uniform being torn off by the impact, the blood, even petals from the flowers on the floor. And I can’t believe I hadn’t learnt my lesson from the first time round and the question about pantsu fanservice popped up again as Yuki’s skirt flapped and her legs swung back and forth with the violence of Ryoko’s strike. -_-;; And yes, I am an AoMM reader, why do you ask? ;)

Yuki collapsing was also incredibly moé - like Kyon, I just wanted to rush forward and make a feeble contribution to her well being. It also showed that while she’s incredibly powerful, she also to manage her system resources.

I think the main effects of shuffling this episode included that it obscured the identity of Kyon’s attacker as recalled in Boredom and also preserved the element of surprise when Yuki pulled her homing mode trick in the same episode.

    Ryouko, COME BACK!!!!!!!!

    *sniff*

She was so awesome, I want more of her slightly cheerful crazyness.

THe Disapearence dude, read it. There’s lots o Yuki and Ryoko goodness in there, lots of awesome and win.

I’m holding off on the novels on the chance that we get a second season.

Regarding the incantations, I am going to copy and paste what I wrote at AoMM.

“Give the fanatics a few days to decode it… they have already more or less decoded what Asakura was chanting to Yuki in Ep10…

I mean… yeesh. They went through the trouble of slowing down the chant, then played it in reverse.

“Kyon-kun no koto suki nandesho? wakatterutte”
    =”You like Kyon-kun, don’t you? I know.”

You know what KyoAni should have done? They should have done what GI:Joe did to fans who decoded Cobra’s spellchanting.

“If you are hearing this, you have too much time on your hands.”

    ;)”

Use VirtualDub to extract the frames from the Yuki-Asakura fight. I’ve been busy making animated gif files when I found to my shock and awe that there are few if any duplicated frames in this sequence (other than what was cause by the 4->5 upconvert caused by going from 24fps->30fps). Settled on 1.7 seconds section of Yuki landing and being impaled. All 43 frames are unique.

The only other sequences that was that framerate intensive were parts of “God Knows”, mainly Yuki’s guitar playing. I have a feeling that KyoAni filmed a band playing the music to use as a reference for the fingering on the guitars as well as the drums.

    Moe… Moeru ( burning or flaming )?!

Yuki-san was so magnificent in her determined defense of Kyon, and yes you are AOMM reader. Still strange this is, refers to himself in third person Zyl does. Has the Main Office appointed you the Grand Master of the Defenders of Nagato-chi? This episode makes the E-7 ridicule of my workstation wallpaper all the more bearable, Semper Paratus is no match for the Moe of Yuki. Kyon should have learned the fireman’s carry perfect excuse to deal with Taniguchi and well… just google it and you shall see why.

You missed a cap of the crowning scene: Yuki feeling her face and realizing that she lost her glasses. Very cute.

From the AnimeSuki Forums, a member has translated the ‘hidden’ Yuki text from the activity log on the official website.

    Yuki’s Interesting Thoughts

    Cheers.

Fencedude, the way Ryouko smiles so cheerfully when she’s trying to stab Kyon was just so creepy - at least Kaede & co had facial contortions. :P

bpop, Disappearance is looking very promising indeed…

Father Xmas, thanks for confirming my suspicion. I was planning to use CCCP ffdshow’s frame capture function but was too lazy in the end.

wontaek, yeah! You got it! I was referring to that joke that Mai makes in a Mai HiME episode 2 (?) preview when she says that it’s going to be moe (萌) school drama but the school nearly gets burned down (燃) instead.

Skane, thanks for the info. Loved Yuki’s interesting thoughts. However I can’t seem to download Ryoko’s wav file…

Crusader, Nagato-chi is The Magnificience indeed. My friends have been looking dubiously at my own laptop wallpaper too. :P

Cheesehead Dave, ooooh you have accused me of a great sin against Yukiism… That is false!! :P I had already capped that missing glasses scene the first time I blogged this episode (in the anime broadcast order).
