The plot thickens as the other members of the SOS Dan reveal their real identities to Kyon - all the SOS Dan members get their fair share of screentime. Ironically Haruhi leads her Brigade on a Sunday search for mysteries around the town when what she’s looking for is right under her own nose - in fact, their identities are almost exactly the same as the roles they play in Ultra Director Haruhi’s great movie.
Lots of Yuki this episode and the highlight for me being Yuki in the library. (Episode 5 post)

Sequence before the OP.

Abstract sequence with Evangelion-like word screens.

Back to normal viewing mode.
Even Yuki drinking tea is moé!

Yuki surprises Kyon by showing interest in his game of othello with Mikuru and anything that makes Mikuru cower is Good. Mikuru is saved from Yuki by Haruhi’s arrival with Itsuki in tow.

"… and have fun with them!"
Make that "found".

Itsuki recognizes Yuki and Mikuru for who they are after Haruhi’s declaration of the SOS-Dan’s purpose.

So is Yuki cuter with or without her glasses?

Other than enjoying Yuki drinking her tea and turning up in her school uniform (though she learns to wear normal clothes by the Lone Island arc), I found myself thinking of Kyon’s observation of Yuki bringing food home in MoHS V when he and Haruhi ran into her after investigating Ryoko’s disappearance. She’s clearly eating in this episode but then at this time, he still isn’t convinced that she’s an alien and even if he looked back on it, he could have thought that she was eating to fit in. MoHS V showed that she does eat when people aren’t watching.

Yuki’s happy floaty walk in the library.
MOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEE!!!
*rolls around the floor*

*much jealousy*

While MoHS II showed that she still saw Kyon at the level of potato, this episode shows that she’s developed a certain possessiveness towards him.
Another thing I’ve realized as I rewatch the series in chronological order is that Kyon switches from addressing Haruhi as “Suzumiya” to the much more intimate “Haruhi” (by the end of MoSH VI?) - at this point, his internal dialogue refers to her as “Haruhi” which also indicates that he is narrating his story as something has happened in the past and commenting on what we’re seeing like he’s also watching the (anime) story of his life with Haruhi - a parallel to what he’s doing in Episode 00!
Come to think about it, since Mikuru knows about Yuki, of course she cowers when Yuki wants to play Othello against her: there is no way a casual player can beat Yuki, who possesses processing power that is probably greater than processing power of all supercomputers existing on the Earth combined. Only deterministic ( no random factors like throwing of dice ) board game a normal human can hope to beat Yuki would probably be Go, and that is because the number of possibility is larger than number of protons in the universe, so you can’t rely on mere simulating of future moves to win the game. The best game to play against Yuki will be game that rely primarily on chance, provided Yuki doesn’t cheat.
The funny thing is, in the novel, Yuki was pretty bad at the game. They never finished, but Mikuru was also playing terrible at the time because of her odd fear of Yuki.
Just because you can’t brute-force something doesn’t mean you can’t construct models to handle it. I’m sure Yuki could become a go grandmaster at will, if she wanted to… but she seems to place some value in experiencing things the way humans do.
Which leads me to believe that all that processing power is at least partially distinct from her conscious and is called up when she needs it rather than being involved in all of her perception and analysis, or she would just automatically be great at everything.
Yuki on otello maybe is similar to Deep Blue with like lightyears of advancement in technology. Mikuru probably doesnt see it as a desktop anymore…its a monster…with glasses. Maybe its like playing with terminator but without his chain guns.
Yuki is best served with either a witch hat OR glasses. Which probably means, as long as she has ONE (no more no less) accessory on hear head, its awesome.
I’d personally say I liked Yuki both ways, although with the witch outfit she’s even cuter somehow. Although, in my opinion, I’d have to say that Yuki brings up the ‘extra’ power only when needed, regarding processing, perhaps either because she doesn’t want to stand out too much (drawing attention), or else because she may not possess it all herself; she’s an ‘extrusion’ of that data entity, but that doesn’t mean that she’s necessarily got prime access/admin-level control of everything that entity has.
Bah! You guys are splitting hairs. Yuki with or without glasses or witch hat is irrelevant I would take her as she is no matter what she decides to wear, still I like Yuki’s hat. If all woman Mikuru is any indication if Mikuru-ran had any fear it would have been due to Yuki’s aura of unknown, and at the time all three Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki are all after the same thing. They did not start out as friends but ended up that way wither because they learned to play nice and be friends or Haruhi-sama willed it. Also if Asakura Ryoko was any indication Yuki and her pals can be very scary if they want to be.
I fondly remember this episode for one thing…
The ‘Gremlin’ faces that SHaruhi made. *haha!*
>> *much jealousy*
Come to think of it, it seems that the only thing Kyon did for Yuki before she started liking him was taking her to the library and getting her a library card.
Even if she’s only 3 years old, that was too easy.
Well, he also complimented her tea when she invited him to her house. I kid, I kid.
Neon Genesis Haruhi
The Original, for easy reference.
Cheers.
Yuki with glasses…yeah! They should have kept the glasses.
>>The best game to play against Yuki will be game that rely primarily on chance, provided Yuki doesn’t cheat.
I agree, should note that if even a small part of the game relied on strategy she would rule you! …well…after she learned how to play, but during that time she would be super kawaii..
That Neon Genesis vid was genius!!!
cclragnarok, helping to save the world from Haruhi also probably helped. ;)
skane, brilliant spoof that was. LOL
I’m thinking that the various Yuki incarnations are just like Mikuru’s many costumes - more facets and aspects of Yuki for me to go moe over!
>> cclragnarok, helping to save the world from Haruhi also probably helped. ;)
Sure, but even before Kyon saved the world Yuki saved him from Ryoko, said that she “personally wants him back,” and asked him out (to the library).
She’s got a good eye for potential in men, that girl has. :P
