The Unbearable Lightness of Non-Being: Sakura Matou

“Oi! You, the ordinary, barely existing one!” (Rebecca Miyamoto to Kurumi Momose, PPD!02) Discuss the extent to which this statement applies to Sakura Matou of Fate/Stay Night.

Just kidding! Still waiting for the torrent to complete for FSN23…

    Well, I’m not really much qualified to say on the state of her because I haven’t played the game, but judging from materials (spoilers, actually), I’d say she’s been pretty much sidelined in the anime.

    I’m noticing a trend in this now, that harem h-game animes now tend to focus directly to the ending of the girl the production team has chosen, which in this case, would be Saber.

    Pity Sakura though, she plays quite a major role in the game but in the anime, she’s been reduced to being Shitrou’s maid and wearing kinky outfits. Too bad Rin is also getting the same treatment as well.

    This -is- the Fate scenario… which, unfortunately, marginalizes all the others in the harem to a bit-part status. Now, if we were talking UBW or Heaven’s Feel, then there’d be more of both Rin and Sakura.. and Ilya for that matter, especially in the latter sequence. At first, I was told that the series would be going a fourth way, rather than blindly following the path of one of the game endings… but at the end, it looks like they’re doing almost all Fate-stuff, without even a hint of UBW or Heaven’s Feel - which is a pity, since both Rin and Sakura get bigger roles in those, and so do a few other Servants.

    Well, if anything. Sakura provided lots of fodder for satire. Boxcutter-Sakura, Plain-Sakura, Bit-Part-Sakura, etc… I have not watched Ep23 yet… but I hope… really hope that Ilya gets to live in the end.

    ;_;

    There’s always one or two of these characters in every anime. You know, the guy who ought to get a greater part and more attention, but never rises above mediocrity? I pity those characters. So much potential, so little fulfilled.

    Not to mention that it would be inconsistent, but trying to squeeze all three Fate plot lines into the anime would’ve used too much time. Some sacrifices had to be made, and well, Saber > Sakura. Personally I would’ve liked to see the Rin storyline though.

    Kurogane, the exception to the ‘focus on winning girl’ approach in recent anime would be SHUFFLE! imho. I’m quite upset with how much Rin has gotten sidelined but making fun of Sakura is so much easier - even if they are both symptoms of the same problem.

    Haesslich, you are right of course. Personally I think this was a strategic error by the studio - the Fate scenario probably didn’t warrant 24 full episodes but might have been absolutely riveting if it were 12-14 episodes. This also had the effect of making the UBW and HF fans unhappy. Just like Tsukihime, the studio translated the simplest route in the game into the anime, wasting the richnesses and potential in the multiple threads of the game. Making all three scenarios work in one anime might have been ambitious but, again, I think SHUFFLE! managed to do it successfully despite having pretty mediocre source material to work with (hugely expanding on Psycho Kaede was a master stroke).

    Skane, my guess is that Ilya will survive but disappear from Shirou’s life. Btw, I am also guessing that Saber returns to her own time.

    Lupus, perhaps the Sakura fans should also be grateful that, at least, her character wasn’t horribly mangled. I’m still upset with how SUNRISE made Lunamaria into Shinn’s gf. X_X

    Indeed - the Fate storyline’s the shortest of them all… and probably one of the more tragic of the love stories, with Heaven’s Feel’s True Ending being the most angst-inducing of the bunch. This would’ve done better in a shorter storyline, especially given how much ‘filler’ there was at the start (3 episodes in which almost nothing happens). Heaven’s Feel or UBW would’ve been better for the 24-to-26 episode run that F/SN has, as the stories there are more convoluted.. and to be honest, ‘deeper’ ones. The other characters get more development in both, and Shirou has a better reason to become a ‘badass’ in there than he did here - he took almost 14 eps to really start getting his stuff together, and only in the last 4 or so has he shown any real redeeming traits as a harem lead.

    Sakura is very pivotal in Fate, if you play through Heaven’s Feel.

    If you think Fate was tragic, wait till you see Heaven’s Feel. HF True Ending is a lot more tragic.

    Ilya’s fated to die, no matter how much you try to save her.
