The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 10

The fan said to Her, “Haruhi, I have sinned against fandom and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your fan.” But Haruhi said to Her animators, “Quick! Bring on my tsundere stuff. Put forth the Kyon sarcasm. Bring the fattened calves of Yuki Techno Battle and Mikuru-oneechan moé. Let us have a feast of an anime episode and celebrate. For this fan of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” So they began to celebrate. (Yuki 15:22)

Hallelujah de arimasu! Praise be! Praise be to Her tsundereness! And did Kyon actually say that he found her angry face to be cute in the opening? Great job with the alternative opening sequence. Kamichu’s opening sequence is still my favourite though.

What a great scene. Wallpaper will win the internet.

Ouch. This brings back painful memories.

I know kung fu.

I can’t believe that I was thinking: “No pantsu fanservice?” (;;^_^)

Attack of the Class Representative!
Somehow I think she’d still lose to PPD’s Ichijou-san.

Nooooes!!! Anything but the buck cake treatment!

Cue ~ensei~

Initial thought: “Gosh, her hands are tiny.”
Second thought: (in Kururu voice) “Megane megane…”

*Zyl explodes from moé overload*

I thought it was quite sweet how Kyon was able to make chit-chat with Yuki about the esoteric topic of time travel and his (internal?) compliment about how she did look better without her spectacles.

No screencaps of onee-Mikuru: Moyism has already done an excellent set. Three main comments. First, she seems more “oneechan” than “oneesama” i.e. non-domineering older girl though it seems, thankfully, less of a doormat. Second, Yuuko Gotoh’s older version of “Kinshouku jikou desu!” was absolutely moérific - mad respect for her command of a range from homely sweetness to boxcutter mode. Finally, is it just me or does the closeup of her wink look weird? A byproduct of anime eyes being so large that when one is open and another is closed, the contrast just snaps my suspension of disbelief in the problems of anime proportions as representation of real life. In any case, a minor quibble for a thoroughly enjoyable episode.

Darn… I wanted to make a similar comment, but I guess I got beaten to it. ;) :P The wink would have worked if they had not prolonged it. My progressive brainthoughts on the wink can be broken down in the following( note, all within split seconds),

    ..) Cute
    ..) Erm…
    ..) Something’s wrong here
    ..) Freaky
    ..) ARRRRGH!

I only have one pounding question on my mind before the fansub comes out. What is written on Yuki’s shoe?

What is written on Yuki’s shoe?

    Nagato.

  3. 3 Stripey

That ‘wallpaper’ pic shouts epic. Easily the grandest scene this ep.

  4. 4 moyism

Zyl, you’ll just have to settle for the HD raw screencap until:

    1. Someone vectors the scene. Hopefully well.
    2. DVD release.

You could always pray to Haruhi and hope a quicker alternative route will show up.

( BTW, I also thought about the lack of pantsu fanservice during Yuki’s jump scene while screencapping. I think it says a lot about our mentality and slow lost of morals thank to anime ^^;; )

  5. 5 Zyl

Moyism, great minds think alike but anime pervs seldom differ. ;)

Well, unlike some people *coughStripeycough* I’ve always been upfront about my perviness. Nyahahaha!

  6. 6 suguru

    Looking at the screencaps my first thought was you’d just skipped the pantsu shot until I read your caption…apparently all fans think alike ^^;

I lol’d at Yuki 15:22–you should write a full Bible for the Church of Haruhi.

    Couple of questions:

    1. Why does Kyon’s real name never get mentioned in the series so far or in the books (suspiscious…)
    2. Why do the anime characters always resemble the voice actors that play them (check Tomokazu Sugita for Shuffle!, this, and Chobits… all look pretty similar)
    3. Why is it called “Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuutsu” when Yuki is obviously the star of the show (Nagato Yuki No Yuutsu, kamo…)

  8. 8 wontaek

    JM. 1 & 3 : Good Question

    2. It makes the voice more believable if there is some resemblance between the real look of the voice actor and the anime character.

suguru: I agree about Zyl writing the Bible. If he does, I will write the Catechism and Theological Essays a la Thomas Aquinas.

  9. 9 Zyl

suguru: Rewriting the Bible in Haruhi’s image is a bit of tough call but it might be feasible to re-write six books i.e. Genesis, Matthew (Mikuru), Mark (Itsuki), Luke (Yuki), John (Kyon) and Revelation. Maybe the parts in Exodus and Deuteronomy on the Ten Commandments and selected Psalms. (;^_^)

wontaek: I’m glad you’re taking Aquinas. He’s important but I find his writing dry. Augustine’s pr0ntastic theology is much more fun to me. LOL And you will also handle the Liturgy? ;)

JM: Hey, long time no see since the end of Shuffle! I’m also curious about Kyon’s real name but it may be one of those gimmicks that are never resolved.

  10. 10 JM

Well, I’ve still been reading your blog since then but I’ve never thought of anything to write! This anime though…. there’s just so much that’s been said about it and that’s still open to debate. I’m still only halfway through the third book (reading Japanese is hard…) but I’m really hoping that the series continues to live up to the quality of this episode.

  11. 11 wontaek

Zyl: Sure I will do the Liturgy. After all Liturgy is what distinguishes each church. I guess it starts with

In nomine Haruhi, et Kyon, et SOS-dan Sancti, Amen

We still need to wage a war over definition of Holy ( unholy? ) Trinity, though.

  12. 12 Haesslich

Yup - this episode was fanservice, through and through - it had Adult Mikuru, Angry Haruhi, Ryouko-inchou fetishm, both the megane-fetish and non-megane Yuki, and some high-flying combat action to go with the rest. And then the ‘quiet time’ scene with Yuki and Kyon there, chatting quietly after the fact.

It’s not the BEST series out there… but it’s doing good with its character designs, and definitely doesn’t feel as boring as some series have turned out to be (*coughAhMegamiSama:SecondSeasonhack*)

  13. 13 wontaek

Be careful Haesslich. Last time I checked, The church set up by Belladandy, Urd, and Skuld still had many followers. They may be incited to launch a Jihad against you.

Gratia domini nostri Kyon, et caritas Haruhi, et comunicatio sancti SOS-dan sit cum omnibus vobis.

  14. 14 morit

i’m a big yuki fan after this episode :)

    Amen.

Correction: Change - ad vitam aeternam

to - ad anime episode aeternam.

Zyl, would you mind to explain why you censored my comment and wontaek’s but didn’t edit wontaek’s initial comment? Besides, my comment was plain sarcasm, it wasn’t offending in any way. Also, I’d appreciate if you deleted the entries completely instead of keeping the nicks as if this was a pillory. I didn’t say anything to be ashamed of and I’ve never come across such censorship in any blog or forum so far. Usually people know how to defend themselves with words or how to ignore statements.

You know, if you stand by your words, a lot of the other comments are truly offensive. Comparing any anime with the Bible is neither funny nor politically correct. So if you truly respected the feelings of those people, you’d have to delete that blasphemy as well.

  21. 21 wontaek

I, a mere liturgist, would like to remain in communion with Zyl, the great scribe, and abide by his decisions, even if it means more of my post getting deleted.

  22. 22 Zyl

Chris, I’m embarrassed that I resorted to such heavyhandedness, particularly against two regular commenters whom I have confidence in maintaining a civil and intelligent discussion. For that I apologize and seek your understanding. I’m glad that wontaek doesn’t mind as much but nonetheless I apologize to him as well. I also should have explained my actions earlier.

People might find the Biblical parodies offensive but there’s also an established and fine tradition in Biblical parody (esp The Life of Brian). I do deeply appreciate how most Christians respect freedom of speech and that purveyors of Biblical parody in Christian-majority countries don’t face police arrest, criminal prosecution and punishment.

I saw both comments as the possible beginnings of something that, in a worst case scenario, could unintentionally start a flame war if others responded to them at face value. Thus my anxiety and my heavyhandness. It’s not a very good explanation but explanations of my behaviour based on personal double-standards rarely are.

  23. 23 wontaek

Fine with me. My writing was a parody of Latin Liturgy, which is known in clerical cricle of Roman Catholic Church as making up ‘Pig Latin’. I need to make another correction.

from : ad Haruhi deum nostrum.
    to: ad Haruhi tsundereko nostrum.

  24. 24 Kyukion

Doesn’t this fight remembers you the end of Evangelion?
    Specially these ones:
    moon
    spikes (asuka’s eva when dieing)
Somehow, Yuki is really simillar to Ayanami Rei…
